“URBN - a charming sustainable boutique hotel in Shanghai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2011

I had a fantastic experience at URBN Shanghai during a recent business trip. Staff are friendly and helpful and the design of the hotel and the rooms is simple yet beautiful. It manages to be cozy and comfortable at the same time as hip and trendy. It's got all the right touches, is not overall glitzy and does not feel as anonymous as the big hotels. I really like how everything is centred in the room, it's a great layout.
Loved the downstairs bar/lounge area as well which is great for having a coffee, working on your laptop (there's wireless) or enjoying a glass of wine. The food was nice on most occassions, however I would have preferred a better selection at breakfast. The one dinner I trialled was amazing (mushroom gnocchi) whereas the other one (maccharoni and cheese) was unfortunately not so nice.
I had a garden view which overlooks the courtyard area, surely a nice place to have dinner or meetings on a summer evening. Unfortunately it was too cold to sit outside at this time of year.
There is a gym connected to the hotel, however it's a 5mins walk away, I was told. Unfortunately too far when you're there for work and pressed for time.
Overall, I'd definitely stay here again anytime and recommend it to my friends.

Greetings from URBN Hotel Shanghai! Thank you for taking time to write a review of our hotel. It is so comforting to know that you enjoyed your stay with us, from your room set-up and your experience at our restaurant to our overall service level. This is what URBN is all about.

It is unfortunate you were too busy with work to visit our phenomenal gym, ONE Wellness. It is one of the best in town! Come back and visit us soon; perhaps next time you can find time to check it out, as well as enjoy your coffee and snacks in our courtyard when the weather gets better. Thanks again!

Travelling to Shanghai mainly for the world fair, but also to experience a true mega city. Urbn Hotel is china's first carbon-neutral hotel, a nice utopian dream of what could be if/when China decides to make a climate change for the better. The hotel has a very nice ambiance and the room are calm and quiet. The staff speaks english, which is nice and helpful in a country where no one else does.

We had a few meetings at the hotel which worked fine. Overall, the experience was great and as opposed to staying at a larger hotel chain, Urbn felt personal and real.

Greetings from URBN Hotel Shanghai! Thank you for taking time to write a review of our hotel. It is always a pleasure to have guests who also share our vision of a world that is carbon-neutral, or at least one that takes strides to improve sustainability. Although Shanghai is one of the more advanced cities in China, it still is quite challenging to get around without any knowledge of the Chinese language. We know this, which is why all our staff are trained to speak and understand English. It is also nice to hear your meetings at our hotel went smoothly. See you soon!

Stayed there in February and really enjoyed. The rooms have a very different floor plan to most hotel rooms that gives it personality and makes it standout. I also like that it is right in a neighborhood and when you enter/exit the hotel you are right on a smaller street instead of being in a bigger property on a big street like so many other hotels in China. The service also was quick an efficient.

Greetings from URBN Hotel Shanghai! Thank you for taking time to write a review of our hotel. I am happy to hear you had a great experience when staying with us last month. Jing'An is a great neighborhood to be located in, it has its fair share of shops and restaurants that cater to both foreigners and locals, offering a unique blend of entertainment and shopping within walking distance. Also, to be located only two blocks from the subway is an added perk for our guests. We hope to see you back with us soon!

I recently stayed at the URBN for a week long work trip to Shanghai, and everything was top-notch. The rooms are beautiful and very clean, the shower is amazing, great beds, and you face a peaceful courtyard where you can hang out in warm weather. It's an oasis in a very central, convenient part of the city. Also, the restaurant food is very good and, by high-end hotel standards in China, reasonably priced. Free wi-fi throughout the hotel and a great gym a couple blocks away (the walk to the gym is more than made up for by how nice it is).

The best thing about the URBN is the service. Everyone there bends over backwards to make sure that your stay is pleasant and that you have what you need. Jonathan in particular was a warm host, who inquired frequently throughout the week about my trip and whether there was anything he could do for me. The front desk staff was English speaking and made sure that I got around the city - even the housekeeping staff were friendly.

I will definitely stay here next time I am in Shanghai.

Greetings from URBN Hotel Shanghai! Thank you for taking time to write a review of our hotel. I am so happy to hear you had a great time staying with us, especially when it was during a work trip. We at URBN know that our business guests want a quiet, comfortable room to retreat to after a long day of meetings, but we don't stop there. Any hotel can offer amazing rooms and sweeping views, but unless there is top-notch service for the guests, then the execution fails. We know how important service is, and we pride ourselves on offering the best in Shanghai. We all look forward to seeing you back at URBN soon!

Tucked away off a conveniently located street near Jing'An Temple, URBN is an oasis in the middle of Shanghai. From the moment I set foot inside their garden courtyard, I felt relaxed -- you can't help but feel "zen" in this setting and unique environment. Upon entering I was immediately greeted by URBN's guest experience manager who gave us a short intro about the history of the carbon neutral hotel and pointing out that all the materials used to construct the hotel were reclaimed and culturally relevant to the region. Make sure to look closely at the "wall" behind registration formed from stacks of antique suitcases from Suzhou. The staff was very knowledgeable in describing particular design elements of the hotel, from the shape of the room doorways (curved and made to feel like you were stepping into a boat cabin) to the wall tiles (shingles from traditional Shanghai shikumen houses). I especially enjoyed the open layout of the room, including the recessed seating area which had comfortable seating pads so I could plop down anywhere to work (in-room wireless was a huge plus!). I was fortunate to have a garden view room and could open the shades and work sitting in the sun from the lounge area of my room. The bathroom and shower facilities were also top-knotch: each room has an open tub and a huge shower stall complete with rainforest showerhead. The dining options were delicious and the upstairs bar also made for a cozy place to get a drink with friends. If I could move into the URBN and live there permanently, I would.

Urbn hotel was recommended to us by a friend living in Shanghai. It proved to be the perfect choice. Urbn is very centrally located, has a garden terrace and great rooms. If you're bored with the cold uber-chic design and boutique hotels that still spring up everywhere around the world, this is the place to go.

Restaurant quality is decent, bar has a good choice of well executed up to date cocktails, spirits, wine and beer (Hoegaarden draft, yummie!). Staff really make an effort and speak English. If you have ever travelled in China, you know this is nothing to take for granted. Even in 4 or 5 star places or those that pretend to be. Front office at Urbn was extremely helpful. Night manager Mr. Seven and the security guy even helped me buying and installing a Chinese mobile SIM card.

There is a good gym just five minutes from the hotel you can use for free. The best experience were the rooms. You're right in the middle of Shanghai yet there's no street noise at all. Slept like a baby. If the wheather is nice, it's just great to go down and sit on the terrace in the sun for a late breakfast. There's actually birds living in that garden, something I didn't expect in smoggy and loud Shanghai.

One minor thing to criticize was a the water lever in the shower, that came off, when using it.

This small boutique hotel in the middle of Shanghai offers everything a traveller can expect. From a superb restaurant, to fluent englisch speaking staff, spacious rooms with a killer bathroom, a nice garden (quite), free wifi, a gym across the street (for free) and a front desk which solves ever problem. So if you ever have the chance to book a room at URBN - and you tired of non-individual design hotels - don´t hesitate.
Best thing: You can sit in front of your window on a cosy couch watching the Shanghai skyline.

It is one of the best in all of Shanghai: clean, quiet, not overly crowded, and they offer multiple classes and workshops daily.
