“mediocre?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

The maintenance budget of the hotel could need an increase. The flooring in the room was in a poor shape and the walls could need another layer of paint. However the bed was surprising comfortable, albeit a bit hard, and I slept very well. The shower is one of the annoying ones that have been designed for people of medium height only, so standing at my full length the head and shoulders were still dry. Why do they make the shower hose short? It can't possible cost much to get it 20 cm longer - not the first time this happens to me (and I consider my 186 cm as average) across the world.

There is wifi in the lobby (free) and supposedly a wired internet connection in the room although I never managed to get it to work. A word of warning - DO NOT USE THE RUNNING MACHINE/TREADMILL - it is lethal as the carpet is not adhering properly to the actual belt so unless you grab hold of the machine itself you'll fall off or break your foot.

The staff is friendly but speaks no English. The breakfast buffet is very chinese but there is a Starbucks only 5 min. away by foot.

The location of the hotel is 15 min by taxi from Nanjing Road or 20-30 min by metro. Not close, nor is the surrounding neighborhood very interesting.

It goes without saying the price of the room is quite reasonable for what you get. If you are on a shoe-string budget (I paid €30/night) this is a quiet and safe place.

Room Tip: Apparently some rooms are two-story suites but at the same price, try to ask. Also, close your wind...

An unpretentious business hotel with few frills, but a very reasonable price for Shanghai. I would stay here again. My humble room (522) was clean and comfortable with a standup shower - no bathtub. Bed was stiff with hardwood floors which is typical for a Chinese business hotel. Adequate Chinese internet connection but no wireless internet. Walking distance (10 minutes) to two different Starbucks and a City Super, i.e.: Western grocery store. Hotel Carolina did not accept AmEx but Visa was OK. Front desk people spoke some English and bellman was very helpful in explaining (via charades) my room heater.

A really good place to stay. Calm and silent. You can relax from city noise streets. Strongly advice for couples. You'll like it. Metro station isn't far from the hotel. Excellent location.

So much better than the elderly Holiday Inn I stayed at 6 years ago.

Xinhua location, suite CNY488 per night

Location: great - short stroll to subway, subway incredibly easy to use and fully bilingual. Excellent restaurant nearby at level 2 of the Crowne Plaza Hotel building.

Facilities: tiny basic gym (2 pieces of equipment), couple of internet PC's in the "Business Centre" and some tables/chairs but no printer. Conference room. Breakfast area.

Room: very large, well presented, great bathroom, excellent wired internet access. Hard bed though! No view. Nice free munchies and soft drinks/water in mini-bar.

Breakfast: Chinese style included but not great - tended to be cold, and they let food, cutlery and drinks run out.

Front Desk Staff: Not good at eye contact, very good at ignoring you until you made a point of things. Mixed standard re English, one gentleman very good, others so-so to weak. Not at all forthcoming - I found the English brochures for Visit Shanghai myself on my last day....

Room Staff: friendly and helpful; no English.

We checked out this hotel based in its positive feedback. But I am afraid that the staff can't live up to the standards. They sometimes just don't seem to understand your wishes or complaints. For instance: we had our luggage stored away for a few days in the countryside. But they couldn't get it out of the storage, because "the guy is not there today". They didn't seem to get that we needed the stuff that evening.

On the other hand: the hotel is clean, (we had a terrible smokersroom, but that was changed) rooms are big, showers are good, and there is a (regularly) working internet connection.

It's a little out of the center of town (It's 20 RMB from the city centre where all the action is, by Taxi) but for this price, its ok!

First impression of the hotel was all right, but upon inspection it looks tired and worn everywhere, including the hotel band. We were on business and we had club level rooms booked. The rooms were ok, nothing to brag about and especially not the club-level I expected, quite small, worn out and the view was terrible. The club lounge was also a little tired and what surprised us the most was that there were no windows in the lounge.
Breakfast was fairly all right, but limited in choices.
What upset me was that they charged one of us 134Euros directly from the credit card with no explanation, which we only noticed when we got back. Still trying to get an explanation, but so far no answers...
Overall, not terrible, but not good either and the last part didn't help either.

I booked this hotel based on the positive reviews here but found it quite disappointing. The walls in my room were badly cracked 2 cracks several metres long ran across the wall and there was large cracks on the ceiling in the bathroom. The bath plug would seal so could not have a bath and the bath rim was lower than the bath so when you has a shower all the water just ran outside the bath creating a lake in the bathroom. The english levels of the staff was quite low maybe one staff member if lucky could speak english well enough to understand instructions. There are no dinner facilities here which is fine but after purchasing some take away food and returning to hotel the staff refused to let me borrow any cutlery to eat the meal with despite the fact that it was all laid out waiting for breakfast only a few metres away.
