“Old-world Shanghai in a fantastic location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013

I booked this on Agoda for about half price and didn't have high expectations, but I was really impressed. This is an amazing hotel that brings you back to old Shanghai. My room was huge, with high ceilings and period furniture. French doors lead to a well- appointed bathroom with a big jacuzzi bathtub. Staff speaks English and service was excellent. It has a boutique feel to it that you don't get with a big high rise hotel. My room was quiet (from street noise) but located close to restaurants, bars and shops. It's a winner.

Room Tip: stay away from the maids storeroom as it can get noisy early.

If you harken back to the pre- World War II days when Shanghai was the most exciting place in Asia and love antiques and memorabilia, the Mansion Hotel is definitely the place to stay. Luxurious without being ostentatious this hotel definitely has an "old world" feel.

Conveniently, located in the historic French Concession area, the Mansion Hotel is just a short taxi ride from the Bund and Nanjing Road shopping. Several of the city's best restaurants are nearby.

This hotel just oozes nostalgia. You can't beat the 5th floor bar for atmosphere and 1930's jazz. Even though the Mansion may have seen better days, it's still a wonderful departure from the modern high rise glittery skyscraper hotel monstrosities which litter today's Shanghai skyline.

Hotel service is outstanding. Unfortunately, the food, especially the breakfast buffet, is nothing to write home about.

If you are going to Shanghai and think what a hotel to choose, first the most important thing to decide it's which part of Shanghai you want to live. It's may be part of a modern skyscraper or an old town with low houses, tall trees and a very pleasant atmosphere. I chose the part named the French confession and have not regretted it. A beautiful old building with history, old photos of imperial family on the walls , the streets as they were a few years ago on the walls, stairs with high steps. I had a lovely room with antique furniture - a table, a dresser, bed, chairs and a coffee table with a huge plate of fruit. The the only thing that is bad is a poor breakfast, but it is forgotten on a fine terrace with a magnificent view of the waking up city.

I noticed that the bulk of the bad reviews were from 4 or 5 years ago, I imagine a lot has been done by management to correct issues because I found this to be a unique and charming hotel. Dotted with antiques and memorabilia from the (mostly) 1920's & '30's this converted mansion oozes with old Shanghai charm. I read that it was also an office building but it must have been a very exclusive office building.

The lobby is large and comfortable although I wouldn't imagine you'd be spending much time there other than to peruse the many artifacts of the era,

The breakfast was quite nice with a decent selection of foods on the table, including the standard cereals, juices, buns, etc. as well as congee and other Asian foods. You can also have the kitchen prepare you eggs to order or noodles in broth to order. Set on the roof top terrace, it was very pleasant.

The rooms were great. Very high ceilings, probably 12 feet (3.5 meters) tall and with nicely recessed lighting to emphasize the height. The room is decorated much as you would expect a hotel room to be decorated in the '20's, but the appliances and furniture are new replicas, down to an old style radio at the bedside. They do, however, in a nod to modern times, include an iPod player and a fax/printer at the very decent sized desk. The chair at the desk was so large and heavy that it could hardly be moved.

My room had a (fake - electric) fireplace, a very nice touch for the sitting area. The bathroom looked appropriate for the period but then you discover all of the many features of the spa/tub and shower. The bath won;t disappoint and the amenities, such as shampoo, are top rate brand names.

There was ample storage space and a bathrobe and slippers are provided.

The only negative, as mentioned by other guests, is that the carpets were not quite as clean as they should be; not dirty mind you, but it had definitely been some time since they were last shampooed.

The bed was very comfortable. The battery operated alarm clock worked fine (and looked like an old windup clock).

All in all a very pleasant stay. The staff were very cordial and helpful with the doorman telling us a lot about the neighborhood and where to go for good food.

I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: There are balconies in the rooms facing the front of the hotel.

We can fully recommend The Mansion Hotel, Shanghai is in the French Concession. My wife has stayed there twice and we will be staying here again hopefully for a trip in 2014. My wife stayed at the hotel at Chinese New Year in February 2010 for the first time and we both stayed recently at the run up to The Mid Autumn Festival in 2012 (end of September). The hotel’s package for airport transfers and full breakfast everyday makes the package ideal for us. The airport transfer was efficient, friendly and reliable. The same can be said for the staff at the hotel – in particular the reception and concierge who helped us out numerous times each day (for eg writing messages in Mandarin for taxi drivers and calling a taxi for us). We love the hotel for its 1930’s Shanghai feel – from all the objets d’art in the lobby to the Chinese deco features in the huge bedrooms and bathrooms. You have to stay in this hotel to see the bathrooms – you can almost swim in the Jacuzzi featured baths. The hotel is very clean although the lighter carpets show some markings. We would personally prefer this as the alternative to “pristine” light carpets means living with the chemicals that are required to keep them that way !! The breakfasts on the first and last day were superb when the “A” Team were on. The middle two days had the “B” Team which simply meant we asked for our coffee and eggs rather than being offered. Personally we can live with this and wouldn’t make an issue of it. The views from the hotel’s restaurant at the veranda level are superb (this is where the breakfasts are also served). There is residential housing below the hotel and so observing everyday home and Shanghai street life at breakfast time is superb. The hotel is easy to reach by taxi (and taxies are cheap at around Y20 (approx £2 to areas such as The Bund, Yu Yuan Gardens)) and there are lots of good restaurants nearby – we recommend Sichuan Citizen for the “basil drop” cocktails – their signature cocktail but beware of it’s lethal qualities !! Elements Fresh is great food, great service and if the weather is warm enough you can sit out on their terrace overlooking Shanghai City. There is also a Wagas for quick and easy supper type meals. We didn’t have time to try Guyi or Coconut Paradise although these were highly recommended so we have included them in these comments so you might like to try them.

I went to visit my daughter who was living in Shanghai, and i asked her to look for an interesting, characterful hotel in the city which was central, convenient and which would not completely break the bank! the rooms also needed to have a good bath to lie back and relax in. The latter condition proved quite demanding but finally she found the Mansion Hotel. It more than fulfilled our requirements - the reception and all the rooms are filled with quirky antique finds - old Remington typewriters and art deco radios. The doors to the individual rooms are enormously tall, and the rooms themselves correspondingly high-ceilinged with luxurious, high, soft (by Chinese standards) beds, and wonderful white-marbelled bathrooms (some with jacuzzis). The rooftop breakfast is also a pleasure, and the reception staff are unfailingly polite and helpful.- we had some rather unusual requests - they were up for the challenge and didn't even raise an eyebrow.

Great location in the French Concession... nice staff and good service... breakfast is OK... but the place needs some updating - air conditioner is terrible in the rooms; a bit dusty and carpets need replacment; charming location for a couple of days.

Room Tip: Old world charm and good location... but it is NOT for everyone.
