“Great hotel in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2010

Stayed here for 4 nights for the end of our Chinese holiday and have to say for the money glad we picked this hotel.
Excellent location for the Yuyuan Gardens, Nanjing Lu and about a 15 minute walk to the Bund. Metro line is right outside but be careful it closes at 7p.m. for some reason so if you are setting your plans around it make sure you double check (we went by Metro all the way back to PVG airport but literally managed the last train before it shut).

Very impressive lobby and lovely spacious, clean bedrooms. Breakfast was very nice tho with great variety on Western & Chinese foods, all be it a tad crowded. Rooftop pool/jacuzzi was a lovely place to unwind at the end of the night, and being open til 11 was ideal for us after another hard days walking!

If I had any negatives it would be the side street to the hotel. Unlike the rest of our travels in China, everything in this street closed at 9p.m and it was quiet eery walking back to the hotel at night (1st time in China we felt vulnerable). Every other night we stuck to the main road, and so not a problem, just felt "different" to the rest of our experiences in China - prob just cos its so Westernised!

Shanghai was a great expereince though (although not quite as special as Beijing for me). We went up Pearl Radio Tower & Jinmao Tower (had a wonderful evening in the bar, great memories), Shanghai Zoo - highly recommended, and all the other sights in Shanghai.

Had a great stay at the Renaissance. Room was beautiful with a lovely view, very comfortable and quiet. The executive lounge was one of the nicest I've seen in any Marriott. Location was great - close to the Bund and Yu fashion garden which had a M&S. Service was excellent. Gym was small but had most of the equipment I wanted with a nice view from the treadmills!

Have stayed at this hotel a couple fo times. The location near YuYuan Garden is a good one, both for the neighborhood and for getting to other parts of the city. Only challenge can be that the hotel's positioning makes catching a taxi challenging some times of the day. There is a subway stop for Line 10 narby, and the Shanghai subway is marvelous.

The value here, relative to many other downtown hotels is good. My only complaint is that the fitness center does not come up to the size and standard I have come to expect of Marriott properties in China. The facility is nicely located on the top floor of the hotel, but it is too small and limited for my tastes. Worked okay for me for a two day stay, but more than that would not have been good.

When in Shanghai, get out to the M50 art district, a great place to spend a few hours.

We stayed here for 5 nights. Room was spacious enough with modern decor. Check in is on the "L" (4th) floor. Staff were friendly & helpful. The indoor pool & jacuzzi is great for a soak as you enjoy the sweeping views of the Huangpu River, Yu Garden & surrounds.

Love being in the Yuyuan area as there's lots to see & the fact that the Yuyuan Station is just outside the hotel. Makes it convenient to get to anywhere. Current operating hours are from 6am-8pm. If you are coming in by train from the airport, there is an elevator up to street level. If you need to pick up some daily necessities, there's a Tesco Express, Marks & Spencer & Manning (pharmacy) in a new mall called Yu Fashion Garden located in the Yu Garden area behind the hotel.

There's a wholesale centre in the building next to the hotel on Fuyou Street that sells hair accessories, some Chinese souvenirs, novelty items, mobile phone accessories, Chinese lanterns/hangings, etc. They are a lot cheaper than the shops in the actual Yu Garden area. As it's wholesale rather than retail, the store keepers don't hassle you at all & leave you alone to wander. They are happy to sell you one item but you need to bargain.

For a real taste of how the Shanghai people live, I suggest wandering in the tiny alleys of the area behind the Yu Garden. According to a taxi driver, after the Expo, a lot of these old houses will be bulldozed for redevelopment. Take a peek into the open doors. You will see how they manage to live in tiny spaces & where the structures are so old & crumbling, you wonder if they would collapse any moment. Also check out the night market in the middle street of Shanghai Old Street (Shanghai Lao Jie) - not to be confused with Yuyuan Lao Jie which is in Yuyuan itself & very touristy. You'll see stall holders cooking all sorts of fascinating food.

This 5* hotel from Marriot Gp did not disappoint me on my recent work trip to SHA, it was located in the Puxi area of Shanghai, near the Bund, overlooking Pudong... it takes approx 1 hr by cab from Pudong Int'l Airport and around RMB$200. The nearest metro station is Yuyuan Station.

I stayed in an executive Club Room, it comes with free internet (but not very good connecting to office VPN) and free access to the Club Lounge on the 17th floor. Room was spacious and very clean. The Lounge was relaxing and a good place to wind down after work or with clients.

In the night, I hit the hotel gym which i found quite fanastic, the treadmills had individual TV screens with headphones to occupy yourself while running. Heated swimming pool was next door as well.

We were upgraded to a fine room [with a standalone bath in bedroom!] overlooking the Bund to Pudong, which gave us use of the business lounge [which had free WiFi]. Meeting rooms available for booking here as part of their services, which seemed like a very good option.

Aside from that, gracious staff who were very accommodating during our visit. Most staff had passable English, others were helpful but sometimes difficult to convey/understand. Recommend to ask the concierge staff to write down in Chinese exactly where you are going in advance, which will help when taking a taxi (or need to ask someone directions).

The Yuan Garden Metro stop [line 10] is directly across the street from the hotel [currently limited service hours as it is new]. Also, close to People's Park, the Bund, and the ‘Flower, bird, fish and insect market’....as well as the antique stalls/vendors set up on Dongtai Road if seeking something old (or just looks that way...).

Visit the glass enclosed pool which you can see through outside to the city. Nice break in the afternoon or early evening.

Would return for a future visit, as the hotel provided a good base to explore Shanghai.

Hotel a two minute walk from Yuyuan garden which was lovely to walk around and Yuyuan itself is fascinating. Easy walk to the riverside - I walked there by myself every night and felt quite safe. Rooms are lovely and comfortable - loved the glass bathroom (it does have a blind for privacy). If you arrive at the airport and get a taxi make sure you have the hotel name translated into Chinese. Better still, take the Maglev and then change to Line 2 on the metro system, go to Peoples Sq and change for Yuyuan (only open during the day) - the metro is easy. Concierge service was ok - the lads didn't speak good English. Hotel had expensive facilities. There is a mini mart about 200m on the opposite side of the road from the hotel towards Nanjing Road - a beer from the hotel minibar cost £3.50, the same beer in the minimart is 50p. Traffic is heavy in Shanghai and although taxis from the hotel are cheap the metro is quicker but remember Yuyuan station is only open during the day just now.
