“Surprising grandeur, wonky lighting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

I booked this hotel after reading the reviews on TA, since I needed to stay in the Hongqiao area for one night. I can confirm that this place is definitely palatial in terms of the lobby and its collection of antiques. The rooms are spacious and the hallways quite grand, if you like that sort of thing. The bathroom seems inspired by the original Four Seasons Singapore ones-marble, big bath and shower, toiletries that look like L'Occitane, hair dryer in a little velvet bag, etc. Every room has its own free WiFi.

There were some negatives though. As some reviewers mentioned, there is a little console below the TV (and a remote) that supposedly control everything in the room, like curtains, temperature, lighting. It is not user friendly and certain functions don't really work, in particular the lighting. This is because the lights in the entrance hallway and bathroom are linked to motion sensors, so if you are in the shower cubicle (out of range), at some point the light in the other part of the bathroom shuts off. I experienced the light going off even while going to the bathroom so unless you dance on the toilet be prepared. I found the air con inadequate and although we were on the "non-smoking" 8th floor, there was a bit of smell. Our taxi driver don't know this hotel although it is situated at a major intersection, as the front is obscured by billboards and the car entrance is at the side, so having a map with Chinese address and the telephone # is helpful. Also, I recommend you sign breakfast to your room before checking out because they wouldn't accept cash payment at the breakfast buffet.

You can find a convenience store, KFC and some Japanese restaurants within walking distance. "Laowai Street" and restaurants like Xiao Nan Guo are a short cab ride away.

I got a reasonable deal on booking.com so felt is was good value for the room size and amenities, but there is definitely room for improvement in the "systems"!

I stayed at the Sky Fortune for 2 weeks on a work related trip. This is a Chinese owned hotel, but competes with any of the international chains. It is a beautifully designed hotel; full of stunning antiques (the entrance is a genuine Ming dynasty gate from a mansion in northern China!) the buffet breakfast is not cheap at 100RMB ($18) but it is a delicious variety of east meets west cuisine. I had room service a couple of times and it was excellent. The room was VERY comfortable, huge and a sumptuous bed. The tv also has a DVD player which was useful (up to the minute DVDs are available for snout 12RMB everywhere.) the location is ok- not downtown but fairly central and a 15 minute walk to the awesome Hongqiao Pearl Market. If you want a comfortable but more Chinese Shanghai experience, this is THE place to stay!

This is a great hotel located on the outskirts of the old French area in Shanghai. The hotel itself is spectacular as are the rooms. The rooms have everything a business man or tourist could require. I got a free upgrade to a suite which came with a great bathroom, small lounge and bedroom with two large beds with luxury bedding. The room has a full desk for those that need to work and each room has its own high speed wifi. There was nothing that I could find fault with in the room nor anything that I wanted more.

The hotel has a well equiped gym although the opening time in the morning (6:30) is a bit late. The gym was also pretty hot when I got there soon after it opened as the A/C clearly does not run at night.

The only area which I thought was a bit below standard was the quality of the breakfast which lacked variety and choise.

This will be my hotel of choise in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Try to get an upgrade to an executive suite.

stay in this hotel every time i am in shanghai.
I would rate hotels according to 6 conditions:
1. location
2. Room and facilities.
3. Breakfast
4. Price.
5. service
6. Overall feeling –would I come back

Sky Fortune has a good location if you are arriving shanghai trough Hongqiao airport (12 minutes) or doing business in this area or taking the train to other parts of china from Hongqiao railway station or need to visit factories out of shanghai city.
Also nearby - are many restaurants and the famous
Hongmei Pedestrian Street offers a range of international culture, bars and restaurants and a nice atmosphere.
2 metro station close by (you need a taxi).
The rooms and facilities are very good and take a look of the amazing antics in the lobby.
Value for money is very high and prices are very good if you compare it to other hotels as this is a boutique hotel.
Service is efficient, warm and very friendly.
breakfast is very good with a lot of choice for western food.
The overall feeling is very good.
As so – it is a recommended hotel in this area of Shanghai. (I have been in many of them
In the past 20 years.)
So I would recommend it and hope that it would stay with the same standards in the future.

Room Tip: go to Nearby Hongmei Pedestrian Street - it offers a range of international bars and diverse rest...

Have stayed here 3 times, and each time very happy. The hotel lobby is impressive, even by Shanghai hotel standards, and the rooms are excellent in both size and quality. Make sure you ask for an upgrade as the quieter floors seem to be higher up.
The downstairs lobby bar has a wonderful selection of teas, and also a reasonably priced Johnny Walker Blue Label for a special occasion. Breakfast buffet is superb, although the service can sometimes vary when they are very busy.
Pool and gym area were spotless on each occasion, and the housekeeping service service is super efficient.
The only real criticism is the check out times - don't leave it until the last minute as it can take 30 minutes to settle your bill some mornings ( yes, really!). Overall, a great place to stay and refresh during a business trip. Sad that out company relocated our office to another part of the city so probably won't be able to come back.

Room Tip: Request a room on the front, and as high up as possible.

I recently stayed here with my wife during a 3 day visit to Shanghai.
I defy anyone not to be impressed with the hotel lobby upon arrival. Huge, with many artefacts (Chinese antiques) dotted all over the place.
Check-in was relatively smooth, although as others have commented the English standard of the staff is only so-so.

The room was very impressive - again huge, like everything in this hotel, although the gizmo for closing the curtains and switching lights on/off required a great deal of practice!

We ate breakfast in the hotel for the 3 mornings we were there. Very good, but the wait staff could be infuriating.
Howe difficult can it be to teach them how to replenish buffet items, both food and plates/crockery, when they are running low?
Noticing that the fresh milk container is nearly empty and needs refilling is hardly rocket science.
And it doesn't take the brains of an Archbishop to realize that cereal bowls are running low and fresh ones are needed.

I suspect thatvthe Management takes young people from the countryside, gives them an English name and a uniform but not a great deal of training.
They need to get this right.
