Our stay at the hyatt on the Bund was reasonable. It is a nice hotel with reasonable rooms. The rooms need a little maintenance and this is visible by the furniture being knocked around a little. The hallway carpets are overdue to be replaced and shows a lack of maintenance. Although the room was comfortable large sliding doors within the room open the sleeping/living area up with the shower & toilet which is not preferable for us.

Room Tip: We had a room over looking the river which had great views.

I didn't stay at the hotel, but I was in the area and stopped by for afternoon tea. It is on the first floor and doesn't have any Bund views, the room is still very comfortable and a great escape from Shanghai summer's heat. Their afternoon tea set very well priced considering the location and everything was delicious! The staff was also very attentive and professional.

Really a mystery to me how this hotel is only ranked around #100 in Shanghai; I have stayed here a dozen or more times and it's always exceeded my expectations. The rooms are real 5-star standard, very stylish and welcoming, a nice change from sterile business hotels with no character.

As others have said, the river views are wonderful and worth paying/asking for, and the rooftop bar gives unquestionably the best view in Shanghai, allowing you to take in both the classic Bund view and the incredible skyscraper mashup of Lujiazui (Pudong). Even if you're not a drinker, or are on your own, go up and treat yourself to a lemonade in the evening once the buildings are lit up. Although the hotel is not right in the midst of an office or shopping area it fulfills the most important criterion of always having a steady supply of taxis.

Most important for me is the service, which is friendly and efficient (though I have had some long waits for check in/out). There's a clear can-do attitude and a desire to help. When my laptop adapter broke I gave it to the concierge in the morning and they had been out and bought a new one for me by the time I got back in the afternoon, all at minimal cost. The breakfast is also worthy of mention and you'll usually be able to pick up a New York Times to read with your morning coffee - a real rarity in China.

The only downside - my company cancelled their corporate rate there in favour of the very good but somewhat soulless Grand Hyatt over the river in Pudong! :(

The Grand Hyatt is a truly beautiful hotel and well deserving of it's 5 stars. We stayed in a suite and it was one of the nicest hotel suites we've ever stayed in. We stayed for 6 nights (part of this for a conference) and then we travelled around China for 2 weeks and returned to the Grand Hyatt for 1 night before flying home. Our only complaint was, when we returned for the 1 night, we asked for an upgrade stating that we had stayed (and paid full rate) for a suite for 6 nights. We just assumed they would look after us but to no avail - we got a standard room on a low floor. That was disappointing. The staff were wonderful during our first 6 night stay but it almost felt like we'd returned to a different hotel. But having said that, we would still recommend this hotel. The location is great and the views of the Shanghai skyline are incredible. Conference facilities were excellent. The roof top bar is amazing! TIP: If you want a balcony (they were quite narrow with no furniture) they are only available in a suite. However, the windows in the hotel rooms open slightly at the bottom. A hotel employee has to open both the balcony door and windows if you request that.

The rooms are beautifully appointed, large, comfortable, and they all have fantastic views. The staff could not be more helpful, and the location is just about perfect. I've been here a number of times, and it's like coming home. Breakfast is better than you'd expect, and the only thing one might improve is the service in the roof-top bar: if you're over 30, you're sort of invisible to the wait staff.

Nevertheless, as someone who is over 30, I'll return.

Stayed here on 2 occasions over 1 week. Rooms are fantastic. Good and roomy. Bathrooms to die for. Well equipped. Stay in the West Wing, and get river views. WOW. The Vue bar on 32nd floor is a must at night. Drinks ridiculously pricey, but the views are absolutely amazing. Take the camera. Get there before 10pm, a lot of the buildings get turned off at this time. Food at breakfast is abundant and caters both Eastern and Western style. Dined at restaurant only once, but food was very good. As per any Asian country, only drink bottled water.

Room Tip: Get a West Wing room with views of the river.

Whilst we didn't stay at this hotel, you MUST visit the VUE Bar, to get the best views of the city and the river at night !!! The downside is if your not a resident at the hotel, there is a cover charge of approx £10, but this includes your first drink. Get there for about 7pm, as the lights start to go on all around, shortly after. It tends to get busy aroun 8pm onwards. This is a " MUST " do whilst in Shanghai, you'll not be dissappointed !!!!!
