“Great asset for the budget traveler”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2010

This is a great budget hotel, at just above 20USD/night it is truly amazing. You get a very clean room, great breakfast and friendly staff. The location is not downtown by any strecth of imagination, but is very easily accessible through two of Shanghai's subway lines. There are few good restaurants in the area, but keep in mind the hotel is in residential area and there are relatively few tourists around.
I would stay there again.

We definitely recommend the Asset in Shanghai. While we were initially disappointed by the small room and somewhat dingy paint, we got over that as soon as we interacted with the staff, and had the free, delicious and plentiful breakfast (Western and Chinese…it kept us going all day at the Expo)! We spent very little time in the room, since we were at the Expo most of the time. The staff at the Asset was super! The people at the front desk were always willing to help us with our MANY questions. They could not have been more helpful. Their English was great and their friendliness and hospitality were even greater. The doormen/security were also very nice, and helpful. The Asset is just a short walk to subway line 7 and 4. It is important to remember to take the hotel directions in Chinese with you to give to Taxis as the Asset is a little tricky to find for them. Cards are provided at the desk. This hotel is just 3 to 4 subway stops to the Expo, costing only 4 RMB. A taxi back takes about 15 minutes and is about 20 RMB unless you take the wrong one (see our report). Re: tp…we never found hotels to be stingy with it, as we had read elsewhere. We highly recommend the Asset and we would go there again!

We stayed at the Asset because of the low price and good comments provided by TripAdvisor. Both things were true! It's a not a big non personal hotel. Quite on the contrary, it’s a small friendly and homely hotel in a typical Shanghai neighbourhood. The hotel is set back around a corner in a courtyard off Wanping South Road. As some contributions in TripAdvisor warn, it is a bit difficult to find initially as it is in the middle of a parking area of several high rise apartments. However, the location is good since the hotel is located in between the Shanghai Stadium and Dong'an Metro stations, which are useful to get to the main tourist attractions. Something important to bear in mind: – Visit the hotel’s web site and download the map and address in Chinese to show your taxi driver. This is essential, as most Chinese do not speak nor understand English! The rooms look just like the pictures on their website. Wardrobe and spacious drawers, green tea bags, suggar and 2 bottles of 500ml water provided free per day. The free basic breakfast was somewhat limited in choice, but plentiful in supply. It included an interesting mix of hot and cold western and eastern delights. The breakfast ladies were very polite, always ready to serve with a smile though they didn’t speak English. However, English is spoken by many at the front desk but not all staff, which is well trained and provide good service. The layout of the floors is a little strange (lots of small steps), which makes it difficult to handle with heavy luggage. There are quite a few restaurant choices in the neighbourhood.
We had a problem with the reservation. We had booked an economical room for 3 nights with twin beds. When we arrived, the hotel didn’t have a double room with twin beds available, so we were given a suite for two nights and then a standard room for the remaining night. At first, they wanted us to pay for the difference in price, which we accepted. Later on, however, they worked the problem out and we didn’t have to pay extra. Even in standard rooms there is a fridge, a kettle, satellite television (some English speaking Asian channels). Also a couple a nice chairs, a small table, a desk and you can dim the lights. There is a safe in the in the clothing cabinet of the bedroom, which is typically loose in China. Central heating worked properly! There are two guest computers available in the lobby, though one was out of order when we stayed at the hotel. Definitely value for money! I would strongly recommend this hotel.
Downside: My perfume was stolen from the suite room (Room 288)! Really a pity, since the hotel is a really very good budget option.

The Asset Hotel is a small and very clean hotel. It was a bit hard to find initially, since it is situated in the midst of the parking area of several high rise apartments. The staff is very helpful. It is located between two metro stops--a leisurely 7-10 minute walk to either. The room was very comfortable for one person. There are quite a few restaurant choices in the neighborhood I was disappointed that there was no wireless available, but there are two computers available in the lobby. I would definitely recommend this hotel for comfort and price.

We stayed at the Asset on our first 2 nights in China. We wanted a place to sleep and get used to the 12 hour time change before starting our extended travels. We stayed at the Asset because of the low price and good comments. Both were true. The price was very low and included a good basic breakfast (very school cafeteria style in a little room), free in room internet, and free computer access on their own in the lobby and EXCELLENT service by all the staff! The manager helped us deal with lost luggage from the airline, places to eat and buy what we needed. Perfect place for our rest and recover before our China travels!

Just stayed in hotel and have an overall very good experience during my stay.
Positives:
1.Clean room with all essential facilties
2.Attentive staff with pride to maintain the reputation of hotel
3.Good surrounding with restuarants, supermarket, bakery and decent massage just across the road
4.Security at main door to screen visitors
Negatives:
1.Wall too thin. Can hear what is happening in next room if they are slightly loud
2.Can be difficult to find for first time. Suggest hotel management to post a zoom in map on website in addition to the current map
Overall is a a very good hotel to stay, will definitely stay again if in Shanghai for holiday.

Booked the hotel for 9 nights after reading some positive reviews on Tripadvisor. The hotel is located in between the Shanghai Stadium and Dong'an Metro stations. It is a good 12 mins walk to either station. It is also tucked in between some residential apartment buildings and you can easily miss it if it is your first visit to the hotel.

The single room is very small and not suitable for those who want space.

The breakfast is the same everyday and not much choices. No problem with this as there are plenty of good eateries just along the main road.

The free internet is useful but can be a tag slow.

The staff were also helpful but I am not sure if all of the spoke English

Overall, it was good value for its price.
