Not all facilities are made to host corporate training. Sun Island is one of the few that I would rate as not suitable for team corporate training. It does have impressive space and good and helpful staff that gave their best. It is the customer-centric organization of facilities that provide the main issue. We spent plenty of time wasted on internal transport. Here is the routine that I will have to go through:

1. My accommodation is in location B. I will have to take an internal bus to location A for my meals and the bus again to location C which house the seminar room. Imagine moving 25 participants through this process for every meals!!!

2. Accommodation is clean. My biggest complaint is that the bed is too hard for comfort. It is like sleeping on a wooden plank surface.

I must give credit to the maintenance of the place. The team has worked hard on this. Equipment that are given to us are working well. Places are kept neat and clean.

Could be a great place for personal reflection but definitely not a place for corporate program

Room Tip: Try finding accommodation in location A where the lobby reception is. It always help to have a resta...

I have recently stayed for almost a week at the Sun Island Wellness and Golf Resort. I absolutely loved this place and it could not have been a better experience.

The resort is located on an actual island at the meeting point of two rivers. Therefore, the place has a very peaceful and serene atmosphere. It is very quiet and in the mornings you wake up with bird songs. The villa I stayed in was spacious, spotlessly clean and very well equipped (the fast Internet connection was particularly useful to me). My sleep was absolutely comfortable on the large bed with its firm mattress and the array of different pillows. It was very pleasurable to walk around the resort, to look at the 1,200 year old Pagoda on the property and to gaze at the ships floating past.

I did not participate in the golfing but did enjoy several visits to their fantastic spa. There I had one of the best massages in my life (a Chinese meridian massage administered by a male therapist). If you feel a bit more adventuresome, try traditional TCM therapies like cupping and spooning. My wellness experience was made even more special with little touches like a lavender eye pillow, and the wellness tip booklet in my room as well as the participation in a laughing yoga class.

The service was absolutely fantastic. Every staff member seemed to be genuinely friendly and went out of the way to help me. The language difficulties were bridged easily by an assigned helper who greeted me right after the commendable pick-up service at the airport. Elaine was lovely, very switched on and had an excellent overview of my timetable and appointments. The excursions we had with Elaine were very well and efficiently organised and there was still room for spontaneous changes according to weather or the interest of travellers. Shanghai and neighbouring cities are stunning and the entire experience truly exceeded our expectations.

Finally the food we had at the resort but also during our excursions was absolutely stunning. It was super-healthy, fantastically presented and even though we ate a lot I managed to lose some weight. I particularly enjoyed the romantic Zen Den Herbal Restaurant. The family who owns the resort has recently built an organic, biodynamic farm which will soon deliver the entire food supply to the resort. It cannot get healthier and better! I absolutely recommend an excursion to this farm, it is very impressive and the lunch we had there was brilliant.

I am not able to relate to some of the more negative comments posted here at all, so do yourself a favour and check out this resort when you come into this region!

About 4 families/friends went to SunIsland resort for a weekend in July 2011. During booking, we were put to a English speaking person, Judy by name, manager I guess, who helped us with almost everything.. explaining about the resort, activities, rates etc.. booking was a breeze.
Once we reached the resort on Saturday around noon, Judy was there to receive us, helped in Checkin formalities, helped in arranging for a place, in the bar, to have our lunch, as we had already brought lots of packed foods, especially for the kids. The bar folks were very supportive and helped us in accommodating us in the bar to have our own lunch, though we bought few stuff from the bar too.
The transport inside the resort is arranged excellently.. lots of small vans, golf carts, buses everything is available with touch of a button from your room... upon calling, they will be at your door step in under 5 minutes.
The room was very cozy, good lighting, good facilities inside the room and it was very compact for a small family.. I took the Deluxe room.

The water park, with the wave pool and one water slide was good, but would've liked two things about it.. one the wave pool was operated every 1 hour and only for 5 minutes each hour.. too less a time to be enjoyed. I have seen the waves being operated every 30 minutes for about 10-15 mins each. And there was only 1 water slide.. the price of 200 RMB per person was too much for such small time enjoyment. Nevertheless, we had fun. there seem to be ample space to have more water rides.. the mgmt should consider adding more rides.

The room service had very few options.. perhaps due to the rooms are very far from the kitchen.

They have a full 18-hole Golf course along with a driving range.. which was quite good. The swimming pool, spa was very neatly maintained. We enjoyed the Spa service.. a chinese massage - quite good.

The breakfast was very sumptuous - a very good spread of continental and chinese foods. this is part of the package.

We had lots of fun.. overall a value for money place with Excellent Customer Service. With a special mention to Ms.Judy for her great courteous service to us.. Thank you.

Room Tip: Book early

Sun Island is an aging property and it shows, despite recent attempts to bring the it upscale with a lavish new spa, restaurant, and sparkling new check-in lobby. Our suite, despite being spacious, was very old with worn furniture, a dank musty smell, and filthy from top to bottom. Suites and villas are arranged in a cramped neighborhood layout far from any of the attractions or restaurants, requiring a shuttle bus ride and a long wait. Shuttle buses rumble throughout the neighborhood's narrow roads disturbing guests early in the morning and late at night.

Food was another low point. The resort's "Entertainment Food Street" features a selection of uninspired restaurants. We tried the Chinese restaurant and it had so-so food with terribly indifferent service, even by Chinese standards. The brand-new restaurant at the spa was worse. Although the food was better, the incompetent staff provided excruciatingly slow service. Breakfast buffet at the main lobby featured good food but was quickly overwhelmed by a crush of hungry diners, with huge crowds jockeying for limited space at the egg, noodle, and fruit stations. Inadequate seating and a kitchen that couldn't replenish the food quickly enough only added to the misery.

Non-golf activities at Sun Island included horseback riding (30 rmb for a 600 m ride on an old, tired horse) and a go-kart track. The go-carts were fast, fun and expensive, but safety is suspect, with a chaotic scene of track workers shouting at wandering patrons to get off the course, coupled with untrained drivers crashing through stiff tire barriers into the adjoining lane and oncoming traffic, and no seat belts in some of the karts. Luckily there were no serious injuries but plenty of spectacular crashes and close calls were witnessed during our short time there. At night, there is nothing to do here other than KTV.

Don't be fooled by the "Shanghai" address. The Sun Island resort is 1 hour away from anything of interest in Shanghai. So if you're here to visit Shanghai, it is much better to stay in one of the city's many fine 5 star hotels. In fact many local Shanghai residents come to Sun Island to escape the crowds and noise of the city. It is not a relaxing getaway and was a disappointment overall.

Room Tip: Villas are not worth the extra cost

We went there expecting to relax in an resort environment with some funn for the kids in their wave pools. But the wave pool was closed inspite of sweltering 30 degree celsius. The reson given to us was it was winter in October. The golf course was ok. Most of the restaurants were also closed leaving us with just 1 or 2 choices.

I am going to bullet my experience:
- location is an hour plus from Shanghai downtown, one way by hotel shuttle, fees
- Western restaurant on location, the western food not so good, wine selection limited.
- Chinese restaurant on location, Dynasty is more like cafeteria style (food is so so), Zen Den Herbal Restaurant food is good and staffs are friendly, some authentic dishes I enjoyed. The other Chinese restaurants are consolidated to Zen Den. Korean restaurant have not tried.
- Spa is clean, staffs are friendly.
- Golf, I did not play because I was turned off by the staff while checking out the golf course.
- The other facilities ( go kart, archery, ping pong, pool) are just average at most.
- Craft studio is closed,
- From location you can hire a car and driver to take you to Suzhou City, Hangzhou City, Zhouzhuang, Da Guan Yuan Garden, Zhujiajiao, Shesshan. Beware time of travel takes longer than estimate due to weather and traffic congestion. The further the destination, allow more time than estimated. The drivers are very friendly but with limited English skill. Make sure to wear the seat belt as the drive by ifself is an experience.
- The staffs have limited speaking skill.

My husband and I traded our Tahoe Time Share for a week at the Sun Island International Resort [-]. This is located about 45 minutes west of Shanghai on an island in the River Mao. The resort occupies most of the island and includes 2 extremely nice golf courses, a spa, several restaurants, a horse riding ring, an outdoor pool/slide area (closed fall/winter), a Go-cart track and many other “activity” venues. Bicycle rental is on the island within the resort and shuttles instantaneously appear at your door whenever you want to go from one part of the resort to another. Note though – activities are seasonal and if you want a FULL experience (wave pools, etc) go in the summer.

The resort was very, very nice, well kept, clean, and a wonderful place to stay. The grounds and gardens are spectacular and they have an army of gardeners to keep it so. We were there in October 2008 during National Day holidays. When we arrived, the resort (which is generally frequented by Chinese families), was empty. On National Day and through the weekend, it was full. Trading a time-share is particularly good, because Interval International (the organization one trades timeshares through) provides you with a “Guide” who takes care of any arrangements you may need or want. Our guide was a wonderful young woman named Elaine and we relied on her a great deal to arrange trips into Shanghai, getting back to the airport, etc.
We had difficulty arranging things at first because the website was in the process of being rebuilt and was not accessible in English so we weren’t sure how to get there from the airport. We finally called the resort and they arranged a driver to pick us up at the PuDong airport (and hour and a half drive from the resort). Mr. Su was at the airport when we arrived and took us to the resort for a flat fee of $335 RMB and all was well. There seem to be a number of “business” meetings and often the restaurants had business groups. However, it was never over-crowded and we were always able to get a table. There are several restaurants at the resort so there is a wide variety of choices for meals. There is even a “western” restaurant where an incredible breakfast buffet is served that includes made-to-order omelets and a number of Chinese and western dishes. Restaurant will also deliver to your lodging (we even did that one night).
The accommodations were great – we had a 2 bedroom, 2 bath chalet type of lodging. Many lodgings are stand-alone. It sort of has a “Tudor England” style to it. Our unit had 2 stories with a living room, kitchen, bath and bedroom downstairs and a bath/bedroom upstairs. I can’t say enough for the service, cleaning, maintenance, and shuttle. It was all really well done and reliable. The pictures on their website are recent and shows how it really looks including the furnishings, etc.
Getting to Shanghai from the resort involved buying a ticket on the shuttle which is scheduled to go at 9AM and return at 9PM and costs 50RMB per person. If you (or your group) are the only people going to Shanghai, you can and go/return any time you’d like (minimum charge is for 3 people). We did that 3 days and spent the days wandering through different sections of Shanghai. It was really convenient and the drive into Shanghai city center is only about 45 minutes (traffic included).
Would we recommend Sun Island? Absolutely. Especially if you are a golfer or a Spa fan.
