“Friendly staff, good food and nice rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

I stayed here for 5 months whilst working in Shanghai. There are a few long stay people in the hotel but most are there for a few days on business or holidays. The hotel staff are very friendly, especially those on the concierge desk. Whilst not all staff are confident in speaking english they certainly have a good go.

Rooms are a nice size, king size beds, a confortable lounge with sofa coffee table and desk, small kitchen with a fridge, microwave, sink and 1 gas hob (if you ask reception to turn it on). Bathrooms are akk marble with shower but no bath. Rooms are clean and turned down every day.

The breakfast if good, a wide selection of both continental and asian food as well as fresh fruit. Dinner is also good in the evening if you dont want to venture out to many of the nearby restaurants.

The hotel is a 10-15 min walk to the nearest line 2 subway station for getting into the centre of town. You can walk into the french concession area though which is great for drinks and dinner if you are after something a little more western.

The hotel is on a main road so ask for a high room and on the back of the hotel.

Overall a nice place to stay, but a little out of town for most tourists.

Room Tip: Higher the better and on the back of the hotel as the highway is out the front.

It's OK. Just. The rooms are definitely quite large but the space is utilised extremely inefficiently so it becomes very annoying. Examples:

- There are two wardrobes in this room (1808), one in the bedroom where you'd expect but it is triangular (that is both walls inside the cupboard slope inwards) so you can hang about 3 things in it. The other normal shaped wardrobe is between the door and the bathroom, at the opposite end of the room from where you'd likely be getting dressed

- There is very little surface space in a usable position. There is a kitchen which has a large worktop but as the kitchen serves no purpose (given that there are no utensils, crockery or pans) it's just wasted. There is a tiny desk which comes adorned with lamp, phone, etc. so the free area is very small. Bedroom has a tiny mantelpiece under the TV.

Biggest problem for me is that the room has large areas of windows and a door (which at first you might think led to a balcony but no, it leads to two air conditioning unit and is obviously otherwise only used for chain smoking) but none of them fit properly. This is true of the windows in the common area so seems likely to afflict the whole hotel. The traffic noise is relentless. From the high and low levels of the road below there's a combined total of about 14 lanes of traffic passing right outside.

Bed is pretty hard but not as solid as some but bedding wasn't terribly clean.

Basically, you can do better for the money in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Hilariously the 'views' from the hotel are described as the "Palm Beach View" and...

Well, the first thing you learn when you arrive in the "cubicle" lobby, is that this was never intended to be a hotel, but rather an apartment building. The Reception service was very disappointing, with a "couldn't care less" attitude. There were no directions to the elevators which happened to be at the end of a maze of corridors. The rooms were unusual. I had one with a really small bedroom and a gaudy lounge with purple sofa. TV was still the old "box" shaped set. Bathroom was old style with a gas heater located on the small balcony outside. Air-conditioning was individual and located on the same balcony. I was told that there was no gas from 10:00pm until next day 10:00am. No apologies or free coffee for the inconvenience.
Bedroom windows lack any insulation and you can hear the cars until early morning.
Breakfast was not very inspiring, the breakfaqst room was hot and humid and visible signs of mould around airconditioning vents.
The Touch Spa on the 2nd floor was dirty and disgusting. I didn't even dare to go into the dingy rooms.
I would not stay here in future and again, inline with most HOJO hotels in china, there is "no" HOJO quality or management. Just sign the hotel up, put the logo on and then forget about the hotel.

Spent two nights there in July 2012. We got the room for approx. 500CNY/night through a Chinese booking website, room 1820 in the east wing.

Negatives: The buildings are clearly converted apartment buildings, which is not a big problem but still affects the overall (i.e. the gas-driven water-heater that makes it hard to keep the water on a medium-warm temperature for more than 1 min. The room showed some wear (wallpaper start to loosen in corners, water leaking onto floor when showering, mold on bathroom ceiling, etc.). Carpet look unclean (not sure how often it is cleaned). If traffic noise bothers you then you might have a problem since the elevated road is right outside the window.

Positives: Very clean (except for carpet). Having a suite with TVs in both rooms meant that we could put our 1+ year son to sleep in the living room one room and still use the other room (which is a BIG plus for us!).

All in all the most important for us is that it is clean and the making it possible to put our son to sleep in another room made the 500CNY deal really good value for us. I would definitely stay here again in the future if travelling with family and if we can get the same price again.

This is a very inexpensive option, the suite has a queen size bed, a kitchen with stove top, refrigerator, microwave, a livingroom w/ couch, desk with internet, and a large bathroom and even a small balcony to allow outdoor access. The breakfast in the morning is open for 4.5 hours and has a chef to make eggs to order. English speaking front desk personnel. Conveniently located to some of Shanghai's historic sites and bus/rail system. Have stayed here twice in last 2 years, and consistent in rates and above comments.

Room Tip: has a spa, didn't use, no pool. 28 floors, elevators are quick and available so stay high, more...

We stayed here on two separate occasions, once in May and most recently in June. I notice no real differences between the east and west wings of the hotel.
The room was a pleasant surprise, much larger than your standard hotel room with a separate bedroom and living room. The TV in the bedroom is more modern and larger than that in the living room that is still an old model CRT but this is of no concern as we rarely watched TV unless in the bedroom.
Rooms were promptly cleaned each day. The kitchen is non functional, there is no cutlery or plates and the gas element does not work unless you ask the hotel to activate it for you. We did not as we had no need for self catering but this may be an issue for other hotel guests who have longer stays. For us, however, this was a non-issue.
The location of the hotel makes it very convenient for taxis as it is at the intersection of two main roads.
Breakfast in the hotel restaurant (included in our first stay but not the second) was above our expectations. We found a good variety was offered of both western and Chinese food.
The only downside is the lack of free wifi that may be an issue for some guests.

We weren't really expecting much from this hotel as our business partners had told us they'd booked it for us based on proximity to their office and it was only so-so, but what a gem of a hotel!

The rooms were cosy but delightful and extremely clean and modern. Beautifully furnished and even a little study and enclosed kitchen. I know people in Sydney who would pay good money to live in a place like this!

As we were taken out by business partners, didn't really spend much time in the hotel or have to deal with staff but we were very happy with the rooms!
