“Very good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

This hotel is definitely worth considering especially for people who are into shopping. This hotel is located in the East Nanjing Road Pedestrian Shopping District. It is located between 2 Shanghai Metro Stations namely, the East Nanjing Road Station and the People's Square Station - both in Line 2. This is also the line that takes you to Shanghai's 2 international airports and the Hongqiao Railway Station.

For sightseers, the location of this hotel will also not disappoint. As mentioned above, the hotel is located between 2 metro stations so getting around the city should not be a problem. The hotel is also within walking distance (around 600 meters) to the Bund and the People's Square. Shanghai's City Sightseeing Bus (hop-on hop-off) also stops right in front on the hotel. For outbound travelers, there is also a window by the ground floor that sells train tickets to I think most parts of China.

The hotel building itself is quite old. The rooms are more than adequately sized and furnished however. The beds are comfortable; the washroom works without a hitch; and the hotel provides each room with a mini water dispenser with a 4-liter water jug to boot. Due to its location some rooms may be susceptible to outside noise especially on weekends where all sorts of performers gather around the area to dance, sings, etc.

It may also be confusing for some people to locate the lobby. It is on the 7th floor of the building. The service level is also adequate. Not every staff speak English but the person manning the reception almost always understands simple English. Other staff are mostly helpful but they don't smile much.

I have stayed in this hotel twice and should I return to Shanghai, I would most definitely return to this hotel again. The price, the location, the size of the rooms make everything about this hotel such a good option.

Old hotel with old rooms, old furniture and everything is old....BUT no regret...this is the best location in Shanghai. Located at Nanjing Road and it is right on top of the shopping complex. Mc Donalds is just opposite the hotel and also a garden right next to the hotel where you can spend your night. Theres also a muslim restaurant around that area but a bit expensive.
Be very careful when taking a motor taxi...they charged us at USD40 for only 10 minutes journey to a massage center....and it was really too much for that 'old man' to charge us that amount. We took a taxi back to hotel and it cost only USD5 with a receipt.

Room Tip: Get a deluxe room for a comfortable stay

My friend and i stayed her for 3 nights - the staff were helpful. couldn't have got a better location for shopping and sight seeing - the hotel was under refurbishment, which we wasn't informed about, so no bar,or food available :( - there was a lovely open bar not far from the hotel, and plenty of restaurants around..

"The hotel was established in 1932 and regarded as the first and most luxurious entertainment place in Shanghai". That’s a pretty long time ago and it appears not much have happened since. Went for executive room hoping to avoid what is written in many of the reviews about this hotel. Located on the top floors with views over Century square and a decent sized room (ca 50 sqm) and with location in the middle of Nanjing road that’s about all the qualities this hotel have + let’s not forget the100% authentic 1930's shanghai feeling. The bed was really killing me, steel springs from the mattress pressed up against my ribs and made it almost impossible to sleep. Ask for extra duvet to soften up. Also, the bathroom is huge but has no drainage capacity causing your feet to be permanently under water, which felt kind of nasty. Some of the other rooms on the upper floors also have what could be described as a balcony but with no furniture though and there is a pretty interesting room alone on the top only accessible via a wooden spiral staircase. I believe this room to be the prime one in this hotel.. This is probably the best of the cheap hotels with direct access to east Nanjing road. Nanjing Road is the world's longest shopping district, around 6 km long, and attracts over 1 million visitors daily but have very few bars/restaurants outside. Outside this hotel you find 2 of those bars/restaurants though. Here you can buy affordable beer up to 5-6 litres cans ^__^ Basement of the hotel have convenience store by the way for even cheaper beer and anything else.

we stayd for 4 night in this hotel, it has a great location - in the middle of the city, a texi can stop in the entrence of the hotel, but when you go from 7th floore and up (that's where the rooms are) you can find a gloomi lady in the reception, we asked for extra sheet and she sayed it could be arrange only tomorrow....
the rooms are realy small, you can'nt open your beg! but it's clean.
for breakfast we went to "sub-way" coffee,(very near) it's open very early in the morning.

This hotel is centrally located at the mall. It can be assessed via the metro, busses and taxi. There are many shops and eatery around and walking distance to th Bund. This is the place if you just want to have a quick feel of the Shanghai City. Cost is reasonable but do not expect excellent service. Treat is as a place for shower and sleep.
