“Great Recommendation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

We have just returned from Shanghai and decided to stay at Salvo Hotel after reading the reviews on Tripadvisor. On the whole our 4 night stay was pleasant. Close to the Bund and the shops on Nanjing Road. We also found it not that far to walk to some of the other sightseeing attractions. Breakfast seemed to be a bit of hit and miss. The first morning we didn't go to breakfast until late (9am) and as they were slowly starting to clear the selection was poor but the next time being a couple of hours earlier there was more than ample to choose from. The only fault I can find is that there was ample wardrobe space but no shelves or drawers if you didn't want to live out of your suitcase and even the hanging space in our room was almost not existent. We were happy with our decision to stay here and would stay again.

Great location and good value for the money. Walking distance to The Bund, Nanjing, Yuyuan Gardens. Decent breakfast. Our room in the 15th floor was LARGE with one section for sleeping, one "office/living room" and a bathroom with tub and shower. The ethernet connection in the room was OK (no WiFi there). If you device does not have a etheret outlet (e.g. MacAir), remember to bring a Ethernet to USB cabel. Excellent service from our room maiden. We also had great help from the frontdesk/bell boys to get taxies and give instructions to the drivers..

Great location and good value for the money. Walking distance to The Bund, Nanjing, Yuyuan Gardens. Decent breakfast. Our room in the 17th floor was LARGE with one section for sleeping, one "office/living room" and a bathroom with tub and shower. The ethernet connection in the room was OK (no WiFi there). If you device does not have a ethernet outlet (e.g. MacAir), remember to bring a Ethernet to USB cabel. Excellent service from our room maiden. We also had great help from the frontdesk/bell boys to get taxies and give instructions to the drivers. As we (and many others) found no wifi but in the entrance hall, the few seats (8) there were often occupied. When we sat down in the nearby empty "business lounge" the staff told us to leave the area. No internet surfing here without buying drinks. As paying guests at the hotel we found this very unfriendly.

My employer always uses this hotel as it is within walking distance of our office in Shanghai, but it would be equally good for those on holiday. Located just behind the Westin, you can walk to Yu Yuan Gardens or Nanjing Road or the Bund within 5-10 minutes, and at only 55 GBP a night, it is a good deal. Breakfast is OK and reception staff are not overly helpful but if you don't need these particularly, then it is perfect.
Rooms are in Chinese style, with dark furnishings. Not to everyone's taste but to be honest it is good to see something rather than the standard western hotel room - there are enough of those elsewhere.
Great local restaurants and Family Mart supermarket almost on the doorstep.
Tip: if you have booked through Expedia or Booking.com or the like, go straight to the 31st floor to check in, don't wait downstairs only to be told to go to the 31st floor......(unless you arrive late at night...)

Room Tip: Any floor ending 07 are tucked away around a corner and on an end so less noise.

The location of this hotel is great - seeing as most hotels around The Bund are super pricey, I was happy to come across The Salvo hotel, in the same area but half the price! It seems this hotel was once very grand and beautiful, it is a bit dated now, but still very clean and all the furniture is in great condition even though you can tell they are actually old pieces. We got upgraded to one of the higher floors where the rooms are actually quite large! There is a space for the beds and another 'office' space with a desk, lounge chair and even another TV. It was a really great! The beds were super comfortable - unlike some of the harder beds we encountered throughout our China trip. Breakfast was decent as well - plenty of western choices. Dont expect the front desk staff to be very friendly or willing - I found most of them a bit rude and dismissive with the exception of a few who were a bit more helpful. The wifi in the room was not working at one point and the guy came to fix it almost immediately, but this was after I asked 3 different people for assistance - the first 2 telling me that there was no wifi in the room when I had actually been connected for the first two days!! Walking distance to The Bund, Nanjing, Yuyuan Gardens! Great place to stay when in Shanghai on a little bit of a budget.

Pros:
1. Located in The people's square (central of Shanghai), easy access to the Bund and NanJing East Rd.
2. Value room rental for business suit, separated living room and bedroom.
3. Friendly concierge
4. Convenience store (Family Mart) cross hotel.

Cons:
1. Breakfast was extremely bad…

Room Tip: 1. Book room above on higher floor to see the view of the People's Square

There are many things that I liked about the Salvo Hotel. At first, it is a bit shocking when you enter the room. We had an Executive Room. Very Chinese-looking, with faux Louis XIV furnishings. Odd, but interesting. The room was well equipped with everything you may need. Bedroom, livingroom and a large tub in the bath. I imagine, considering the young men at the entrance to the hotel who were always trying to get me hooked up with a woman, that these large, ample bathrooms and tubs saw much action.

Breakfast was included, daily. A good selection. Paid over $90 USD per night. Fair, I guess. Good location. A five minute walk from the subway. Also five minutes to the Nanjing Walking Street. Great place to hang out in the evenings, though you will get taken to the cleaners when you go out for drinks. In China, people drink in their homes. They gather there with friends, or family, so you will not see the pubs you see in England, or the drinking establishments you find in the states. When you do find a drinking establishment, prepare to pay $10 for a large beer.

There are food marts all around the hotel. Great place to get munchies and drinks.

All in all, if I would return to Shanghai, I might stay there again. Would recommend.
