“Great hotel, with great location”

We stayed in an Executive Apartment for eight nights with my wife and daughter of 2 years, and we really enjoyed it. We had requested an apartment high in the building and were assigned an apartment on 24th floor (out of 28th floors) – from here we had a magnificent view of the Shanghai skyline at night.

The hotel is located half a block north of Jingling Dong Lu, two blocks east from the concert hall and the southern part of the Peoples Square park areas. We found the location is ideal for Shanghai, in the center of all the major sights. If you as us like to walk when sightseeing you will be able to walk to most sights. Main sights and areas such as The Bund, Xintiandi, Huaihai Road (shopping), Nanjing Dong Lu (main walking street), Peoples Square, Shanghai Museum, The Old City and Yu Garden are all reachable within maximum 20 minutes walking. If going further out, Dashije Metro station is 5 minutes away connecting to the major lines.

Just off the hotel area, around Jingling Dong Lu you will find plenty of (good) Chinese restaurants, as well as McDonalds and Subway if you are more to western foods. As in most of Shanghai it can be a problem to order or read the menu if you (as us) do not read or talk Chinese. There are though several restaurants with pictures in the menus, some also with English dish names. Tip: Just 1,5 blocks west on Jingling Dong Lu you will find the Canton Fare restaurant preparing nice Malaysian/Cantonese dishes, having a menu with both English texts and pictures. They also offer take-away.

Just outside the hotel you find several super markets.

The hotel it is nice and clean, and the staff is helpful and speaks sufficient English. Our room was bit, with a living room with dining area, office, a small kitchen, bedroom and bath with bathtub. The apartment had a nice style, and was well maintained. All rooms (besides bathroom and kitchen) were equipped with A/C which is nice in Mach allowing heating the apartment. The Cable TV offered HBO, a local movie channel, ESPN and CNN in English and TV5 Mondi in French.

The bed was fine, maybe a bit hard for my taste. We had no problems with noise, either from the city nor from the other apartments. It was nice and quiet.

In the room only a cabled (paid) internet connection was available in the office. To use WIFI you had to go to the lobby, here though the connection was free. The connection was stable and had a sufficient speed.

We used the pool area a few times, which was really nice. The whole area as well as the pool is heated to a nice comfortably temperature (we stayed here in the winter). There is sauna, steam bath, and Jacuzzi but all of this is located in separate sections for men and women, only the pool is unisex.

We rented western style kitchen ware (a onetime fee of 10 RMB per set), which was nice. However the dish washing done by the cleaning staff of the dirty dishes was very sloppy, and we often found plates, knifes etc. still dirty after the maid had “washed” them – that was simply not in line with the standard you would expect.

All in all we had a very nice stay here, and would definitely stay here again and recommend the hotel. What we was missing to give the full 5 stars is a few more cable channels, wifi in the room and a notch up on the kitchen cleaning by the staff.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floors for a good view, and less noise from the streets.

Location was amazing great for first timers in Shanghai. Most major Shanghai inner city attractions are within walking distance; Nanjing Road Shopping pedestrian (15 mins), People Square (10 mins), the Bund and Yu Garden/ Old shangai.

Located a block away from Dasijie Metro station and from there, almost anywhere is accessible including Pudong airport.

Lots of eating places in nearby streets - eg Henan streets all selling Shanghainese as well as Szechuan food. For those who misses southern chinese/ South East Asian food, there is a very reasonable priced restaurtant - Glorious (I think it is called) on Jiangling street about 5 mins from the hotel.

Stayed there last week for 2 nights in the 3 room apartment. The apartment was really nice..Rooms are very well maintained and look new. They provide drinking water in the kitchen. There is a washing machine and microwave oven. The location is good,near to eating places. Walking to Nanjing Road is not very very near though. Subway station was near,about 5minutes walk. Name of the nearest subway station is Dashijie.

I stayed four nights at this property this month whilst in Shanghai for business. The price was great -- S$88 /night -- and the location is three blocks from our offices there.

The rooms are clean and the bed reasonably comfortable. And I had no issue with noise that others have commented on. All of that said, the rooms are quite basic. Despite a list of items available in a minibar, there was none in my room. The TV didn't work. The towels were a bit frayed and quite thin. It took a few minutes for the shower to warm up each morning. And the lack of wifi was seriously inconvenient. There's no desk in the apartment, although there is a nice dining table. Too bad it's too far from the ASDL outlet....So work was performed hunched over the coffee table.

Would I stay here again? For a business trip, yes. We're aggressive about managing costs, and the location can't be beat. However, if I were to travel to Shanghai on a personal visit, I might shell out a little more money for a full-service hotel.

I had five nights at New Harbour Service Apartments and loved it. It is central to many tourist sites with it being less than ten minutes walk to The Bund and less to the main shopping street of Nanjing Rd.

The apartment itself was very clean and spacious. Each room was large including the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and lounge area with all the fittings and appliances you could hope for. The view was pretty good although you are surrounded by other tall buildings but not right up next to you. The pool is heated and a decent size also. The restaurant was nice and the food very good although not spectacular.

Below the building to the side is a supermarket which was great and a subway station (Dashijie‎) is located nearby. There are also some of the nicest cake shops I have ever visited with the prices extremely low compared to what I am used to.

One word of warning an it is not related to the hotel. If you get the express train from the airport touts will try and get you into their taxis and charge you five times what the fare is worth. This of course isn't unusual and they tried it with me and failed but you have to be forceful. Taxis are usually parked outside the hotel 24 hours a day so leaving is easy.

I was warned by a number of people that Shanghai isn't that great a city to visit. I would disagree and loved the fact that The Bund is still alive and well. Ok, it isn't that traditional in a Chinese sense but compared to Beijing which I felt was empty Shanghai still has a sense of excitement about it.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to visit Shanghai.

I stayed at this property for over 2 months while on a short-term work assignment in Shanghai. I have to say it was difficult to adjust to my living arrangements in the beginning! I lived in room #2408, while spacious and quiet, the furnishings and amenities were very, very, basic and simple. I also had a kitchen that I never used. albeit the fridge and microwave. Housekeeping did a decent job most of the time, the front desk staff were not the most helpful (except "Tony"), the pool was closed the entire time I was there, there was no wireless service (broadband only) , and I did not use the F&B outlet. However, I always felt safe, the location was perfect (walking distant to major sites and Dashjie station line 8), and it was in a lively area (the early morning "farmers market" was always interesting). So, if you don't care about Frette sheets, fluffy towels, the smell of "sewage" in your bathroom wafting up the drain, and no clothes dryer. This could be your place. During my last days in Shanghai I checked into a 5 star hotel!

Room Tip: Request a high floor and a renovated room...

The apartments are in a wonderful location from which to explore Shanghai on foot and using public transport. Many major attractions were within a 30-minute walk, usually much less. You can easily walk to People's Square, Huaihai Road, Nanjing Road, The Bund and the Old City, amongst other places.

At reception, staff were cooperative, courteous, helpful and spoke English reasonably well. They gave us an apartment on the 25th floor (out of 28 floors indicated on the lift-elevator). It had a lovely view over older 1930s, low-rise residences and shops, Yan'an Elevated Road (expressway), People's Square, Shanghai Museum, City Hall and Shanghai Grand Theatre towards skyscrapers in the distance.

The apartment was spacious, well-furnished in modern style and reasonably well maintained (it needed attention to minor stains, wear and scuff marks on some of the furniture). It had an entry, kitchen, dining and lounge areas and a separate office room, bedroom and bathroom, all with parquet floors.

The kitchen had a two gas burners but no oven, twin sinks, cabinets, microwave oven, an electric water heater with a large container of bottled water above the heater-dispenser (not the usual electric kettle) and a washing machine (with instructions in Chinese only). The kitchen did not have cooking or eating utensils except for two each of large and small plates, medium and small bowls, and pairs of chopsticks. If you want to cook and eat in the apartment, you will need to make additional arrangements.

The medium size refrigerator was in the dining area and had a freezer above but no ice tray. It contained beverages-soft drinks, beer, bottled water and sachets of prepared coffee — all of which you had to pay for if consumed. Everything was more expensive than the prices in the supermarket and convenience stores in the streets outside the building. Only the tea bags in the kitchen, two green, two black, were free. You could use the microwave oven to boil water in the mugs provided.

The dining area gave you access to the port for connecting a cable (provided in the apartment) to the free Internet, which worked flawlessly. The power point next to the port accepted North American, European and Australasian electric plugs.

The office room had a desk, chair, bookshelves and a floor lamp. The room would be useful for quiet work, conducting an interview, or leaving one's luggage, among other uses.

The bedroom had a firm but comfortable queen-size bed, two double closets (one with a room safe), bedside tables (one with a lamp and the other with a phone), and a bureau with a TV (the lounge area had another bureau also with a TV). It had room-darkening curtains and was adequately isolated from noise outside or between rooms. The sound of traffic outside did not bother us and we slept well. It was wonderful to have a separate bedroom well away from the entrance to the apartment and from the usual corridor noises which disturb one's sleep.

The bathroom had a full bath with shower, but no bidet. It had a slight smell of drain but nothing excessive or bothersome. The hot water system worked well. The bath had a liquid soap dispenser for showering and the wash basin solid soap. If you need something replaced, such as soap or tea, you can get it from Housekeeping-Laundry on the third floor; however, it will help to have what you want written in Chinese — otherwise, ask reception for the item.

Windows had single glazing only (you could open them if you wanted to). This meant that noises from traffic on the elevated road and from the streets below entered the apartment. Traffic reduced significantly at night, so it did not bother us. (For such a modern building, we were surprised that the builders did not install double-glazed windows given the location of the building near an expressway and the need today for greater insulation and energy efficiency.)

The air conditioners (remotely controlled) above the windows in each of the three main rooms worked well and cooled quickly. The TV had about 24 channels, mostly in Chinese, but including some in English, French and German (mainly news).

The building had a restaurant (a bit expensive compared to others outside the building), gym, indoor swimming pool, and business centre. We did not use any of them so cannot comment. The building provides free parking by prior arrangement (a good deal given the location in the centre of town).

To get to the apartments you can use the Maglev and then transfer to the subway-metro, or else you can use the subway-metro all the way though with changes. Signs at the airport will guide you to the ticket kiosk for the Maglev and, separately, to the subway-metro. Signs in trains and at the stations are bilingual (Chinese and English); also, the next station is announced (Chinese and English) in some trains.

Showing your boarding pass reduces the cost of your Maglev ticket from 50 to 40 yuan (80 yuan return). Once you board the train, the trip takes about eight minutes; the display in the carriage shows a maximum speed at 300 km/hr. The train terminates at Longyang Road subway-metro station. The escalators down to the lowest level of the station brings you to the subway-metro.

Separate ticket machines take either coins or paper yuan. On the display, touch "English"; at the bottom of the next display touch the number of the line with your destination station (in our case Line 8); on the next display touch the name of the station (Dashijie). The display then gives the ticket price and the option to select the number of tickets you want. Touch the number of tickets and then pay the total price displayed. Ticket machines which take paper currency also give change with the tickets.

Longyang Road subway-metro station is on Line 2; you will need to change to Line 8 at People's Square. You can transfer via an underground walk with escalators. Signs indicate the next station and that at the end of the line. Ensure that you go in the correct direction (Aerospace Museum). Note that if you get on Line 2 at Pudong International Airport (the start-end of the line), you will have only one change of trains (to Line 8 at People's Square) and pay only 7 yuan for the trip. Of course, the trip will take longer than that on the Maglev.

Note that the subway-metro stations (sometimes) have escalators up but not down. Hence, in using the system you will need to have the stamina and strength to carry your luggage down and up flights of stairs. Lifts-elevators exist but are not always easy to find, or functioning without staff to operate them.

Once you arrive at Dashijie station look for exit signs on the top of the walls outside the barriers-turnstiles. Take Exit 2 "East Jinling Road" and go up the escalator. You will pass a McDonalds sign and at the top as you enter the street you will see the "Careme" pastry-coffee shop. Turn left on Jinling Road East, away from the intersection (where signs give the street names) and traffic lights. Walk three blocks: pass the McDonalds and cross Yuan Road South and Guangxi Road South to Yongshou Road (each road has a street sign at the corner).

Turn left into Yongshou Road and walk up. The apartment building is half a block up on your left and set back from the street. You will see a blue and yellow sign with the name of the apartments in Chinese and English. The walk takes 5-10 minutes.

Along Jinling Road East on the way to the apartments were convenience stores on both sides: 711, Family Mart and Tesco Express (on the opposite side). Along Yongshou Road across from the apartments was a small supermarket. At the back of the hotel property at the corner of Guangxi Road South and Ninghai Road Ease, there was a medium-sized supermarket "Jiadeli". Stores do not provide shopping bags so you will need to bring your own in which to carry away your purchases.

At night (in summer) Jinling Road East from the subway-metro station would be lined with sidewalk (literally) vendors and people from the adjoining residential areas enjoying night social life while relaxing on chairs and chaise lounge chairs. In the morning you would never have known that they had been there.

If you walk along Jinling Road East away from Xizung Road and towards Henan Road, you will find it lined on both sides with shops selling musical instruments of all types, both western and eastern.

In the basement area of the Dashijie metro station building was a good Chinese restaurant and a good Vietnamese restaurant "Pho Fans Bistro Vietnamien". Both had a menu with English; the latter's was more precise.

Three museums especially worth visiting, particularly regarding the development of Shanghai from its past into its future are Shanghai Museum and the Urban Planning Centre (both a convenient walk from the apartments to People's Square) and the Shanghai History Museum at the base of the Oriental Pearl Tower just on the other side of the river in Pudong.

A good place for a light breakfast or snack convenient to the apartments is the "Apple Garden" pastry-coffee shop on Jinling Road, near the corner with Zhejiang Road South and across the street. As you go in, pick up a tray and cover it with a sheet of paper from the shelf above. Take a pair of tongs and put your selection on the tray. Take it to the cashier and also give her the tongs for cleaning. Order the type of coffee you want: one of the staff understood some English. The shop has two tables with several chairs, so you can eat-in if you wish, take your purchases back to the apartments or take them away for having a snack while sightseeing. This pastry shop had the best quality and selection of the various shops we had tried.
