The restaurant is located in the newly open Mandarin Oriental Pudong Shanghai. Located on the ground floor of the service apartment (there are two towers, one is for the hotel and the other is for the apartments and restaurants) the restaurant is neatly tucked in in a corner overlooking Pudong skyline and a very well-designed courtyard. The decor is tasteful and the layout caters for a couple, 4 people, and even a bigger group of 8-10. You can also dine outside.
Hmm where to begin? The high quality chinaware? Expensive cutlery? Very attentive waiters and waitresses?
Food and beverage:
Although the price is gearing toward expensive side of the spectrum, my partner and I believe that it is worth it. The quality of the ingredients is very good. We ordered beef tartar and langoustine. It was so good my partner wants to come back just to eat the langoustine. The server will ask whether you want the appetizers individually or to be shared. Moving to the mains, we ordered coq au vin and flank steak for me (medium rare). coq au vin was superb and the steak, though look simple, taste like heaven. on the side, a steady stream of excellent bread accompany your dining experience. They serve either regular butter or this special pork fat mixed with chilly (i forgot the french name). Tasty! Dessert was like a beautiful cadence to the whole orchestra. My dark chocolate tart was perfect whilst my partner's mille feuille with strawberry sauce gave a beautiful closing to the marathon of foodgasm. We ordered Kir peach and some wine to accompany our food and the drinks were of the same high quality as the food.
The only reason why i didn't give 5 stars for the service is because my partner and I felt that the waiters and waitresses were a bit stressed. they were running around in hurry and buzzed like bees. However, when they reach your table they come with utmost professionalism and sincerely stand there to listen to your request and provide good service. Several cases to prove my point. The lovely lady dressed in black (we think she is the sommelier) came to our table several times to check whether our drinks arrived or not. she would also check whether we get ice water or not. and when she talked to us, she would lower herself so that she's on our eye level. Another example, some of the newer waitress and waiter took away my bread plate and butter just after we finished the appetizer. I didn't ask for it because I decided I had enough bread. So the entries arrived and while we were eating it, the other (junior) waiter took away my partner's bread plate. The assistant manager saw it and he came immediately to apologize and gave a new plate with bread etc. But he didn't realize that my bread plate was taken earlier too. My partner notified him and when he realized this he immediately came back with new plate for me. My partner's glass was cleared away when there was still drink inside the glass. Again, the assistant manager came to apologize. To our surprise, when we paid the bill, the restaurant did not charge for the dessert we ordered to apologize for all the mishaps during service.
To conclude, we were blown away by the service and the quality of the food. When we were there, the restaurant was quite full. I guess it just proves that this establishment is a well-needed addition in Shanghai for those who are looking not just good food but good service as well.
We will come back for sure!
