“What you'd expect from the Mandarin Oriental”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

I stayed one night at this hotel for a business trip. The service of course was top of the line, as all staff managers and most others could speak English quite well. The room itself was quite well decorated and the bed, very comfy. I ordered room service from their very extensive in-room menu. The 2 items I ordered could have been more reasonably priced, considering the of the plates. But other than that, the one night stay pretty seamless, enjoyable and hassle free.

The bed is hard compare to W hotel, but very comfortable. When I asked for hot oatmeal at breakfast, they asked for the type of milk I prefer and immediately made it. Best slippers from any hotel. Service is professional and excellent. The gym is huge and clean. I only stayed one night but would definitely return in the future. Location is not central, but a good choice if you are heading to PVG airport.

I stayed two nights at the MO Pudong in a Club River View room. It is a very nice hotel. The bath products and linens are fantastic. The safe is at eye-level (a minor detail but one I have come to appreciate) and there's a tv over the bathtub. The pool and spa facilities are really great although I had a bit of a language problem. I kept asking for the hot tub or jacuzzi (I used both words) and was repeatedly told they had neither, but then I was eventually shown the pool area and there was the hot tub! I had an excellent massage and facial at the spa and would recommend it.

I would like to particularly mention Emma and Miker in the Club Lounge as being particularly helpful and friendly and just totally lovely during my stay, helping me with transport, printing things, tours, etc.

So...I hate to make a list of cons because really, this is a gorgeous hotel with excellent service, but I feel like some of the reviews are vague and I want to be specific with you:

The hotel is in Pudong. If you are familiar with London, this is like coming to London to see Buckingham Palace, but staying in Canary Wharf. If you are a tourist, staying in Pudong means that you will need to either
1. HOPE the hotel car can take you to the metro and take the metro into town
2. Walk to the metro (about 15 minutes across busy intersections), and remember Shanghai pollution is intense.
3. Take a taxi into town, which means taking the tunnel which is two lanes and painfully slow during rush hour. (Although taxis are cheap.) I took a taxi home from dinner in Xintiandi one night after dinner and it was cheap and fast, but I would not try that during rush hour.

I had a couple of issues with the hotel car. Once, the hotel told me (similar to a previous reviewer) that the car would be available in 5 minutes. 20 minutes later and still no car. Another time, they told me to forget about the hotel car and just take a taxi to the metro. For a hotel of this caliber, I would expect more...like maybe they could use technology to geo-locate the cars and message with them or something.

Other thoughts...
One of the reasons why I like club floors is that you usually end up talking to someone interesting at breakfast or cocktails. However...the lounge was oddly empty during my stay. I saw max four other people at one time while I was in there. The staff told me that they were very busy with requests from people staying on club floors, but I honestly never saw these guests.

I had the same problem as a previous reviewer with the cash machine in the lower lever. Firstly, even when you select English, the machine is mostly in Chinese. Then, I finally made it through all the screens with help from someone from the business center and no money. I knew enough to go up to reception and ask for a cash advance rather than have my taxi drive me around on my way to the airport, looking for an ATM.

Ah, the food in the club floor...I felt that it could be better. I was very spoiled by the delicious food in the club lounge at the Intercontinental Saigon, where I had stayed just prior to my trip to Shanghai. While I appreciated that the MO wanted me to have a salad, I wanted lots and lots of dumplings and noodles instead. Maybe a lot of tourists like Western food, but I wanted more Shanghai! The mushroom bisque was nice though.

Hotel room fittings...a previous reviewer mentions that the hotel fittings seem a little sloppy, and I would agree. I was surprised by the imperfections in a hotel of this quality. The tilework, the woodwork...everything was high quality, but not 100%. Maybe I have spent too much time in Germany.

So...I want to really emphasize that this is a great "staycation" type of hotel. A great place to go if you just want to spa and relax forever. My four star rating is based mainly on the location, which being outside of town, makes for challenges in touring.

I came to Shanghai for 3 days to farewell my best friend. Hotel was just fabulous. I was delighted by the incredible service from the beginning to the end. As soon as I step out of the taxi I was greeted by well-groomed gentlemen. He said “Welcome to Mandarin Oriental, Shanghai” He also assisted me with the luggage and escorted me to Front Desk where beautiful girl welcomed me with warm and sincere smile. After few moments all the staff I encountered was addressing me by name which made me feel truly VIP.

I booked Club Deluxe River View Room which was stunning. All the equipment and materials were luxurious from comfortable bed which you can stay all day long to state of art technology (IPod player, Electric curtains, super-stable Wi-Fi, Illy coffee machine). Everything in the room was so user friendly that it took me just couple of minutes to feel like at home.

Housekeeping service is also worth to mention as they were impeccably attentive and every time you come back to the room everything was just perfect. I called housekeeping for laundry service and I was addressed again by name and lady spoke surprisingly good English (This is extremely surprising, even for luxury 5 star hotels in China).

Special thanks to Concierge and Club Lounge staff. They satisfied my every desire in amazingly efficient and professional manner. The best service I ever experienced in a hotel. Concierge staff showed great knowledge of the city from very famous places to quite small ones which surprised me taking into consideration the size of Shanghai. All my outside activities were arranged perfectly and all the information accurately provided. Actually, all the staff delivered very proactive service which in certain moments you even don’t expect, making you feel really delighted.

Thank you very much for all the care and service. I definitely would like to come back as 3 days were simple not enough to experience everything the hotel has to offer. Strongly recommend trying a world of luxury and personalized service! The only emotions I had was “Wow”.

Growing up in a family owned hospitality company, I am aware of all important key challenges a hotel faces in todays world.

The stay at the MO Shanghai is just simply describable with a WOW!!!
Lets start at the beginning of my sojourn in this hotel, arriving at the impressive gateway of the hotel a well groomed young Gentlemen welcomed me with a warm smile “Welcome to Mandarin Oriental Shanghai”, assisting me immediately with my little language difficulties, which I had with the taxi driver.

Afterwards, I have been escorted immediately to the Reception area, where a young lovely lady assisted me with the check in a fast, warm and professional manner, making use of my name, which just gave it an additional personal plus factor.
Finishing off with the check in process I have been directed to the room, by another very friendly staff, which introduced the state of the art facilities in an efficient manner according to my personal needs.

I have booked a club river view room and the view is truly amazing, overlooking the Huangpu river.
The hotel is not even a year old and the way it has been constructed is stunning. The room features a real attention to details, how it has been designed, using high quality furniture and material throughout.
Furthermore the room is very spacious and I really had one of the greatest coffees there, since the hotel is using a high quality Illy coffee machine and don’t worry if you miss anything one ring and you are greeted by a warm welcoming voice, who fulfils every wish in moments.
The Club lounge, features an ample selection of delicacies, fresh seasonal and innovative. Following an ample selection of soft drinks, juices and wines, especially the Champagne cocktails were magnificent.

My entire stay at MO I could just see friendly, carrying and very professional staff. The level of English was exceptionally good and this is not always the case in China, not even in thehigh-class hotels in Shanghai.
The ample and F&B facilities are featuring very interesting and delicious restaurants, where for every taste is something to find.
The area were the MO is constructed is a very new and nice giving a bit of flair of modern Europe with Asian accents.

Somebody would say well he has to make a 20 minutes drive to explore the city life in Shanghai, when staying at the MO, but well folks if this is the price, I am more then willing to pay it, when I can stay at this hotel.

Thanks to the entire team of Mandarin Oriental Shanghai, to make it a wonderful impressing stay and Ill be back for sure.

Views from my room was stunning, hotel staffs were very kind and polite, hotel facilities were so clean/modern/well-maintained. I'll come here again!

I read lots of reviews from this page before I made my mind to choose this hotel. It paid it well because everything the reviewers said were true. This hotel is located at riverside and offer striking views. I stayed at 'Mandarin River View Room' which they simply call a 'corner' room. This room is located at the corner of the floor and had really nice view from both bedroom and bathroom. There was a big round bath tub in the bathroom right next to windows. Enjoyed the night views so much.

Hotel staffs were very kind and I really did realize what 'eager to help' means. They were the best hotel staffs that I have ever seen from any other hotel. Well done for the hotel staffs and managment.

I've never stayed in any other Mandarin hotels but I'll consider one when I'll travel to other cities in the future.

Room Tip: Choose a 'mandarin xxxx view room' which is a corner room that offers a wider/nicer bathroom...
