When I think of Shanghai, I think of The Bund on the Pu-Xi side looking across at the Disney'esque future world of Pu-Dong. This was the first spot that I hit when I arrived in Shanghai and have to say the view lived up to my expectations and left me in awe.
The view is almost surreal and personally, I can stare at it for hours. Maybe cause I'm a techie and love that kind of stuff. I love modern. But I also love history and if you walk south, you can get a good view of the old Pu-Xi side and take some good pictures with the old buildings.
The Pu-Dong side is nice too. Some nice restaurants there and I had dinner at one of them. Great view at night and more photo ops.
My only pet peeves were the agressive beggars and hawkers. Also, I wish there were more ways to access the Bund promenade rather than the 1 or 2 underground access paths. One time I had to dash across the wide 8-lane road because I didn't want to walk all the way to the underground path. Perhaps they are building pedestrian crossings. There was some construction going on at the time.

I just returned from a business trip to shanghai and could say that in overall I was quite surpirsed with the expereince. The most famous and attractive sight could be regarded as the Bund also knon as the Zhongshan Road. It starts from the Baidu Bridge, which is at the connecting point of the Huangpu River and the Suzhou Creek, to the East Jinling Road and winds a 1500 meters.

Whether it is in the daytime or at night, the views along the river are the same beautiful. The great modern skyscrapers and the characteristic buildings in different architectural styles are the best records of the development of the city and the Huangpu River, the birthplace of Shanghai, is the faithful eyewitness.

The most famous and attractive sight which is at the west side of the Bund are the 52 various buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance. All now turned into bars, discos, restaurants and has become a very popular hangout specially for the european community living in Shanghai.

“Beautiful Architecture, Stunning Views”

The Bund is one of THE sights to see if you visit Shanghai. Perfect for strolling and people-watching, it offers great views of Huangpu River traffic, the modern skyscrapers of Pudong, and is adjacent to touristy shopping mecca Nanjing Road. Bring a camera: day or night you will capture a magical shot. This is also the area where you can purchase tickets for a boat ride.

I do agree with the previous reviewer though in that there are A LOT of aggressive beggers and salespeople (selling everything from fake Rolexes to poorly made toys). However, they are not as bad as on Nanjing Road and I didn't encounter those pesky "art students" here.
