A great display of Chinese artifacts dating back several thousand years. A good day's outing. Very enjoyable.

“Best Museum in China - have to go if in Shanghai and not a barbarian.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2013

You know, China was the largest economy in the world until the 1800's and courtesy of the GFC brought to us by the banksters, it probably is the largest economy again.

Its a fact that the Chinese people had a vibrant and complex society while the rest of us in the West, and everyone else in the world, were living in swamps and eating weeds and insects.

This place has a very compact collection of artifacts which can be seen in the course of 2-3 hours to do it justice. And justice you must do it. You will be enhanced by contemplating beauty.

It goes without saying that many of the pieces are breathtakingly beautiful, ingenious as to manufacture, and humbling as to antiquity.

Had the chinese decided to be a little more expansioninst in their earlier history, who knows what the cultural and industrial landscape would be like across the middle east and europe today. But they didn't; they stayed at home to congratulate each other on making a good fist out of life - well, unless you were a peasant, as usual.

And, there is no entry fee. Bonus!

“Nice”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

It was nice but not my cup of tea. Full nice artifacts and culture, very nicely decorated. The chinese are obviously very proud of this museum.

“A plesant surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

Don't really like museums but this one was an exception. It is quite compact so you don't get overloaded with too many exhibits. The ceramics hall is excellent and has vases going back to 3000BC.

“A joy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 22, 2013

The building itself is a work of art. The four floors are well organized into three or four sections. An item of interest is the lighting system. The rooms are dark, and as we walked into a section, the lights could brighten. A clever way to save electricity.
