“met my needs”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

Stayed here on business for 3 nights in May 2013, female traveling solo. I found the room to be fine (clean, spacious enough for 1 person), staff to be helpful (English was spotty but they did their best to help), breakfast buffet had decent choices (Western - limited, Chinese and Japanese). Bed not too hard for me, pillows fine. No iron in the room but no problem to borrow. WiFi only in the lobby, but in each room was a computer to use or a cable to connect your own laptop (free). Location was within walkiing distance to the pedestrian mall (many Western restaurant choices), subway station and other shopping. For the price, I would stay here again.

We stayed in the hotel for 3 nights, mainly due to it's location (we are Jewish and the hotel is very near Chabad, which made it very comfortable for Yom Kippur). We felt that, apart from the location, there was nothing in this hotel to make us return to it. The Family room was very small and the feeling was that this is meant to be only for business men. Certainly not recommended for families.

I was attending a business meeting in Shanghai and had the opportunity to stay at the New Garden. At times service was complicated due to the lack of English speaking employees. The breakfast staff was outstanding as well as the housekeeping staff.

Majority of the menu Items were Chinese based but the quality was very good (withing walking distance was a row of international restaurants that provided multiple options).

If you need to get to downtown the best route is taxi.

Was in Shanghai last April after absence of over 10 years, stayed in this renovated 3 star hotel which is near to Hongqiao airport and high speed rail station. It's very convenient to nearby Xujiahui where there are many new shopping malls with good clsss restaurants. Room rate comes with ABF which is acceptable but repeatitive throughout my 3 nites stay.
Not much to complain about facilities/cleaniless/concierge. For competitive rate, stay here and
travel around Shanghai where taxis are plentiful especially when you only use room to sleep.

Room Tip: Always ask for non-smoking floor in the land of smokers

i've stayed in this hotel several times on different occations, it is close to the hongqiao airport which makes its location very attractive. Moreover,it is not in the airport but in a populated area and with a shopping mall at about 15 minutes walk (pearl city).
it is built flat as a 2-3 floors high building not more- the adventage of it is if you are disabled or if it fits your likings, the disadvantage is based in the fact that you have to walk a substantial distance in order to get from the entrance/ reception to your room or to the resturant and so on. Added to the fact that there are no bell boys to assist you with your luggage- it is not the nicest experiance.
service in general is correct and not more, no one will do his utmost to assist you but will answer relevant questions with ease and comfort.
room is poorly decorated and not so clean (run down towels), internet is seperatly paid and expensive- i hate that.
All in all, if you had to be in this specific area and you are budget it is not a terriable choice, however givven any other oppurtunity- i would take it and go elsewhere.

Room Tip: ask for a low floor and to be as close to the entrance as possible, otherwise it's quite a long...

This is sort of a hidden hotel in the hongqiao area. I only booked this hotel because I have family members living in hongqiao area. Some cab drivers don't even know this hotel! This is a three star hotel and it serves like a three star.

Overall, it's a different kind of hotel because it is not high rise buildings but a renovated old chinese mansion style architecture. Although online shows that they re-renovated back in 2003, it seems quite used and old. There were a few patches on the carpet, but overall clean.

Recently, subway line 10 was opened and is located approximately 5-10 walk away. However, during out stay, that subway line closes at around 8pm, so we usually only use it to get to the city which was convenient.

The air conditioner was quite loud and the tv remote doesn't work well (works soemtimes and sometimes not). The lobby is cool but once started walking towards the room, it feels stuffy and hot because the place was too big I guess.

It seems like there're many chinese tours staying over. Our first night was quite horrible because the rooms around us were from the same group and those men opened their room door and talked loudly across the hallway while smoking (not sure whether there're smoking and non-smoking rooms). We complained at the front desk the next day and was told that the group of people already checked out. The rest of the stay was fine.

Shanghai has thousands of hotels ranging from very old-world European hotels from Shanghai's Golden Age in the Bund, to trendy boutique hotels in Pudong, to scruffy hostels and flophouses. The New Garden Hotel is a special hotel in a town full of them.

Unlike most Shanghai hotels, the New Garden is not a high-rise - it is no more than three stories tall. It has a relaxed but elegant feel to it. It is built around a series of small ponds with fountains and gardens and the sound of water masks the sounds of traffic right outside your window. It is easy to forget you are in one of the world's most crowded and populated cities when you stay at the New Garden. It is a sprawling complex with restaurants, ballrooms, karaoke, massage studio, business center, gift shop, beauty salon and more. The staff was very cosmopolitan and professional and helpful. The say this is a three star hotel, but I would give it four. The rooms are large and comfortable with large bathrooms in a western style. It has free broadband internet access and cable television. At $65, including a truly wonderful breakfast in a lovely restaurant, it is a very good deal in Shanghai.

The downside to the New Garden is its location. It is quite off the beaten path, about 10 minutes from the nearest subway station (BTW, Shanghai's subway is fantastic!), so it takes time to get to the city center and even longer to get to Pudong. Although this is hardly in the boondocks, I did feel that I was missing some of the excitement of downtown Shanghai. It is in a more newly developed economic zone and it lacks a lot of the character of old Shanghai or the Bund.

Still, it is a good value for the money and a comfortable, relaxing and lovely place in a very hectic city.

  • Liked — elegant and relaxing in a very hectic city
  • Disliked — hard beds (true all over China)
