“The best hotel we have ever stayed in”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

This is an outstanding hotel. The building has a magical quality, especially when it's lit up at night. Even the "superior" room (the lowest of the range) is well furnished, and - unusually for China - has a comfortable bed that is not too hard. Free local bottled water, as well as fruit and a chocolate bar, are provided. (But avoid drinking the French bottled water, for which an exorbitant charge will be made. And also avoid the tap water, which is not drinkable.) Rooms are in fact in an annex at the back which is a later addition. The toilet is amazing. A "control panel" next to it effectively turns it into a bidet. Some sockets take European style plugs.

There is a combined TV/computer terminal, with free internet access - although being China, social media sites are banned, and in our experience .com sites loaded so slowly as to be almost unusable. (Use google.co uk as your search engine. This loads almost instantaneously. google.com is redirected to the censored Hong Kong site.) The only English channels are CNN and BBC World News.

One amusing touch is the attempt at translating the fire regulations into English. The last line requires you to "point profess your excellency seat". There is also a strange instruction on the toilet lid, "do not weigh", which I can only guess is supposed to mean "no way"!

The original building is used for breakfast (which is typical, with a mix of western and Chinese dishes), and also appears to have various function rooms.

It's in a convenient location, next to the "blue" elevated road of James Bond fame (although not so close that the noise is intrusive), and Nanjing West Road and Shaanxi South Road metro stations are both within a 10 minute walk.

At the front there is a nice, atmospheric garden, with goldfish swimming in the artificial streams.

Room Tip: North facing rooms overlook a school playground, so expect loud music and the noise of children play...

We stayed two nights in the superior business room at the end of a two week China trip. Our room was a gorgeous affair with the softest king bed, huge bay window, tastefully decorated with nice little details such as a bedside clock that lights up when tipped. We loved the wood and marble floors and enjoyed a relaxing soak in the deep tub, natural light streaming through the bathroom window.
Wifi was only accessible in the lobby. However, internet was available on the in room TV. The connection was slow most times.
The breakfast was offered in the main building in a tranquil setting. We were seated in a booth overlooking the gardens. The breakfast buffet offered a good selection of delicious chinese foods, breads, fruit and an egg station.
We came expecting inferior service but were pleasantly surprised. Most of the staff spoke english and were helpful.

Although it appears that the hotel is not geared towards tourists, (no maps or tour desks) when asked, the young girl at the business office helped us locate tickets for the acrobatic show.
Our only complaint was the stained rugs in the hallways. Otherwise, a perfect stay.

2 nights on business and given a superior room. What they really mean is suite. Probably the second best room I've ever stayed in after The Witchery in Edinburgh. Almost colonial in style, there are various public rooms which were once drawing rooms or similar. If you don't want the usual conglomerate luxury hotel choose this one.

This hotel was reasonably priced and reasonably situated in the city. The internet access was possible but only from the lobby. For me this was OK but not convieninet like it would be to have access in the room. The room itself was clean and I have no complaints about that. Breakfast was included. it was Average, had a variety but was not huge variety like you see at the 5 star hotels in China. The hotel cost for Shanghai I consider mid-range so value for the price was very good. The garden areas were small but nice. I have to agree that this is not a full service hotel but if you know this in advance and stay here anyway that will not be a dissapointment for you.

Room Tip: A room close to the loby may allow for wiFi signal in room vs. going to the lobby.

Shanghai was our first stop in China and we had a very unpleasant experience at this hotel. We were presented with inflated bills on two occasions and it is only with the help of our Chinese friends that we could have the charges reversed. We felt we were being taken advantage of!
When we checked into the new wing at around 8 pm it was a struggle communicating with the Reception staff as they knew little or no English. The carpets in the corridor were stained and in urgent need of cleaning/changing. Very very far from being a five star hotel that they claim to be!
On the plus side the reception areas in both the old and new wing are charming and the building looks like a small European castle with a pretty little garden. Just a minute away from the hotel (on your left) is a newspaper vendor who sells a good map of Shanghai for 12 yuan. Two minutes away (on your right) is a Family Mart where you can pick up water, juice and snacks. The hotel provides just one small bottle of water per day.
The hotel is walking distance to an interesting shopping area and to South Beauty, the iconic Sichuan restaurant which is located in an old villa. We discovered a lovely little cafe La Mer...walk out from the hotel to the right, turn right again and it's on your left. Great for coffee/tea, sandwiches and cake.
.

Room Tip: Book a room in the old wing of the hotel

The room we stay has smell, checkout spend 35mins, because the maid couldn't find something, eventually, they found without any apology. I saw few slugs on garden table, they use salt to kill them. Very disgusting.
Not recommend this hotel even it is very charming old house.

Room Tip: Not recommend this hotel, you can find better hotel with cheapper price in this area.

Not your ordinary run-of-the mill hotel. The rooms were large, clean and bright and the staff were very friendly and helpful. This was the first stop of my first trip to China and it was great introduction to the City and country and the first of many excellent experiences which completely changed any pre conceived ideas I might have had about China. A first class way to start the trip of a lifetime.

The Hotel is an easy walk for the downtown area and there are many good restaurants nearby if budget is an issue. The Hotel gardens are also well worth a stroll.
