Thankfully our group stayed here for a little amount of time during our 2 wks in China, just 2 nights.

The hotel is undergoing a re-furb, so the rooms may be better then... however... my room hadn't been re-furbed (well, I assume anyway!!). The carpet was heavily stained as were the 2 armchairs, wallpaper hanging off the wall under the window, lots of black human hairs found all over the place, extremely starched scratchy noisy duvet covers.

My room was on floor 6, above the restaurant on floor 5 and it seemed to smell of food constantly and smoke, not pleasant.

View ok over the city roads, pleasure to watch people outside the block opposite doing Tai Chi in the morning - that was the highlight of the hotel.

A long way out of town, an organised tour for us - which took about an hour to get to the Shanhai Museum in the morning.

I loved Shanghai and would liked to have stayed here to explore longer in a more central hotel.

Stayed just one night at this dreadful Hotel at the end of a wonderful trip to China.
Breakfast was awful ,room was tatty and unclean though staff were pleasant .
Would not recommend anyone to stay here .

A Kuoni recommended hotel - however, not in next year's brochure!!
Very disappointing. Rooms basic, but clean and spacious, this was the only good thing about the hotel, apart from the boutique in reception which was well stocked with handmade souvenirs, or tatt as we like to call it!
Rooms on the front of the hotel very noisy from traffic outside at major crossroads.
Random fire crackers let off daily in the street for no apparent reason at 7am or earlier.
Rooms at the back of the hotel overlook a stagnant green river/stream used mainly by cats.
The restaurant attached to the hotel was called the Shatin Cafe which summed it up, they refused to allow English people, namely my mother, entry! They said no English allowed when she tried to ask to see the menu.
Breakfast appauling, served in the ballroom, and not very hygienic. Very smoky, we moved tables 3 times in one breakfast sitting to avoid the smoke billowing over us - more so than you would notice normally in a smoky environment. Also is home to the World's slowest toaster - at least 10 minutes per slice!
None of the hotel staff speak English very well. Reception was permanently staffed with trainees who didn't know what they were doing, and on average it took 4 people to assist you.
The lack of English did not stop them trying to charge my sister 7 yuan (approx 50p) for a soap dish she allegedly chipped on departure - this caused a scene on their part the size of a small international incident as my sister was escorted to reception to resolve the matter, which was then decided was not her fault, and that she wouldn't be charged.
Have never stayed in a hotel that has a list in the bedroom drawer of damage/replacement charges.
Very few places to eat locally which didn't avoid a taxi journey - in fact none! However, only about 15 minutes from some good parts of the town, for approximately £2 taxi fare.
Handy little supermarket round the corner to get breakfast supplies!

Summary:
An adequate hotel but a long way from the heart of Shanghai.

When and why we stayed:
Stayed for two nights in November 2006 during a Highlights of China tour.

Cost:
The hotel was included in the overall cost of our holiday.

Room:
Our room was modest (Travelodge in the UK standard). The room had a Mini Bar but the convenience store opposite the hotel was much cheaper for beer, water, and snacks. The hotel provided two bottles of complimentary water each day

The Hotel:
The hotel is modern with a plush lobby where there is a bar that serves excellent expensive (30 yuans a cup) L’Avazza coffee. The breakfast buffet was poor offering a limited selection of food and insipid coffee.

Location:
The hotel is situated in Hongqiao, a long (albeit inexpensive taxi ride) from the heart of Shanghai. A taxi from The Bund to the hotel cost 24 yuans. The journey from the Jin Mao Tower cost 40 yuans.

The city:
I have seen the future and it is Shanghai – it is an incredible city. It is very modern but unlike elsewhere in China the past has been preserved. The Bund is super-cool but we couldn't afford to shop in the stores there! The Shanghai Museum in Peoples Square is superb. The Urban Planning Exhibition (opposite the Museum) sounds dull but is super-interesting and worth a visit to view the vast scale model of the Shanghai of the future. Wait until it gets dark to take the lift to the top of Jin Mao Tower to view the city at night. I defy you to be unimpressed.
