“Not a 5 star, but still a great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2011

We checked in pretty late in the evening and were given an upgrade due to no rooms left at our rate. The room was nice and had a great jacuzzi tub. The front desk was super helpful and nice at check in. The next day in the afternoon there was lot of banging going on the room above us and we called down to complain. The assistant manager apologized but di tell us contruction was going on, but he would happilty move our room. We were moving into a suite and it was even nicer than our first upgrade. I did attempt to go and get a massage, but the lady kept bothering me to get a longer masssage or an oil massage, which was more expensive. I left after 15minutes and refused to pay since she kept bothering me instead of allowing me to relax. The gym has free weights and 5 or 6 treadmills, an elliptical machine, and a stationary bike. The pool is quite large, but I did not go in. Overall the majority of the people were very nice and helpful. The construction issues were constant throughtout our 5 day stay, so this was my main negative.

Stayed 6 time in last 3 months, for a total of over 35 nights. Primarily for location.
Positives :
1. Great location. Walking distance to People's Square Stn.
2. Very close to McDonalds, Subway, Pizza Hut
Negatives
1. Many Rude staff.
2. Air conditioning faulty. Room can be very cold or hot depending on ducting.
3. Food and beverage Dept need overhaul.
4. Internet wifi in lower floors have poor connectivity. Excellent if you get room in 21st Floor and above.
5. Beware the concierge and RED & White Taxi standing, near the gate on Juijiang Road. Meter 'runs'. Came up with a reading of 260 RMB on a no traffic day, to Pudong airport. This is about 160 RMB on similar trips.

Bathrooms maybe only one star. Toilet was not working and was never repared properly. Dripped all the time. Bath wall had mildew and soap scum buildup. Not enough English speaking personnel. Staff was helpful otherwise. Only four lobby chairs for very large hotel and none near the front where you need to wait for taxi or friends. "healing" massage over rated not worth it. Computer in business center old and very slow , also was in Chinese and could only partially convert to English;had to ask for help from staff.

Stayed in this hotel for 4d/3n, mainly to see the World Expo. travelled with my brother. Well, first off, this hotel is right smack in the center of Shanghai financial and shopping so it makes this hotel quite convenient either by subway (People's Square Station) or taxis. It is fronting Jiujiang Road, and Nanjing is at the back, and Nanjing Road has all shops and restaurants you can imagine period. Well, back to the hotel, rooms are very clean and not too cramped. Walls are quite thin as you can hear the adjacent rooms' conversation and TV sounds. Bathroom is nice but door has no locks (be warned). The bed is kind of stiff, so those who are not used to hard mattresses could find a hard time sleeping, Room cards keep getting erased, (front desk said not to keep them near your cellphones...how?? they're both in your pockets or bag.. duhhh??) so you have to bring them to the front desk everytime to get re-configured, quite a hassle. But the main complain I have are the hotel's elevators, they are soooooooo sloooooooow!! They take a good five to ten minutes to get to the upper floors, stopping in between each floor to pick up guests if there's heavy traffic. Breakfast buffet is so-so, doesn't change much each day. Hotel staff give crappy service, they don't care much to assist you in anything really. So in summary, I would say if not for it's location, this hotel is quite forgettable.

Stayed here for a few nights while visiting expo. The location is excellent with Nanjing Rd on your doorstep.

The hotel claims it's a 5 star but this is based on a local Chinese star rating system. By international standards, 4 stars at most.

The rooms are not luxurious but tidy and comfortable. The beds are very hard (a plus for me) which some may not like. HBO and a couple of news channels are the only english language channels available on TV.

I found the bellboys very helpful for flagging down taxis (and telling the driver where to go) and the concierge was always able to get reservations at the restaurants I requested.

There's also a reasonable cantonese restaurant in the hotel - we were able to get a banquet for four people + drinks for around 250CNY.

All in all, if you're wanting a good location in Shanghai without spending too much money, this is a good hotel. If you're wanting something more luxurious then there are much better hotels (like the peace hotel or the peninsula)

It takes time to go and up down the elevator because aside from being slow, it is also small that it can only accomodate about 8 people. It is difficult to bring down the luggages because you have to wait for an empty elevator.
Their breakfast is bad and their rooms may be big but unfunctional for a practical traveller like us.

This hotel was a pleasant surprise. Evidently once run by Ramada Plaza, but now a local concern.
The hotel is comfortable, generous and old style luxury.
The first impression is the glamourous large lobby with a vaulted ceiling and stained glass cupola. The décor is wood, marble and illuminated onyx with crisply turned out staff. Desk staff communicated efficiently in English and were professional and attentive.
Our room was a king size with an extra child’s bed. The room was huge with a sofa and arm chair setting, coffee table, plenty of room for a spare bed, separate walk in wardrobe and large bathroom with double sinks/bath and separate shower. Décor was not cutting edge but very comfortable and in good condition.

The breakfast was of a good standard with plenty of local and western options, but no espresso coffee available.

The hotel location was pretty good, clustered in a popular hotel region around people’s square and bustling Nanjing road. Short walk to the Bund was good feature.

Free but slow in room and in common area wifi.

The swimming pool on level 7 was indoor and about 20m, fine for lap swimming. The gym was small with older but adequate machines.
