“Moldy room”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2013

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for three nights.
The first thing I noticed about the room was that it smelled of damp as as we're both a bit asthmatic we had to spend the nights with the windows open (Very noisy). We later found that the window seals had gone and that water was coming in and creating a wet carpet.
The breakfast was excellent although we were early birds and experienced the full spread. Get there early as they don't appear to replenish food. When its gone its gone!
Apart from the above the hotel was average and to me would be a struggling 3* hotel that needs an overhaul.

Very good hotel, clean, comfortable and large rooms, nothing to complain about in this regard. Good restaurants and convenience stores within a walkable distance, almost a pleasant experience but...
-the breakfast experience is a mess since most of the guests come with a group and, obviously, most of the groups start their tours around the same time in the morning; as a result there is a large number of people running around the two (smallish) breakfast rooms, looking for plates, coffee, queing for toast or for juice; an awful way to start the day, and
-there is no wifi in the lobby since the hotel is trying to make some money (I wonder how much they make) by charging for the Internet access.

Room Tip: the higher, the better

This was the last hotel we stayed at on a Wendy Wu tour. The hotel was good in that the rooms were clean, comfortable and the tour organisers had arranged a late checkout which was great with the rainy day we ended with. The wi fi was a real disappointment. It was the only hotel where there was a charge for the wi fi, no free service in the foyer even as in other places. The security on the wifi was also poor, easy to seen other room login and by using a tiny bit of common sense the password to other rooms was clear, Business clients just add it to their costs but for tourists who only want to check emails, airport details, look up the odd shopping need taking less than 30 mins a day, this is a drag. Breakfast was chaotic to find a table, the omelettes slow and the replenishment of breads, fruits etc very tardy. Bar prices were high and selection limited.

I get the room at 21st floor. The room was a quite big, with air condition. The bathroom was good and included a bath tub and a shower place.
I liked a spacious bed and a separate sitting corner. The view was bad, I was looking at the next building.
But the biggest problem was smell. From the first moment the moldy smell was continuous and there were no way how to solve that problem. I don't want to imagine the smell during the summer.
First day I tried to explain that on the reception desk but I could not find anybody who can understand English.
Also I have to notice a very well organized "escort" service in the Diamond bar at 28th floor. If you are coming with the kids be aware of that because that's so obvious that I felt uncomfortable to stay in the lobby after 10 PM.

I stayed at this hotel in May whilst on tour with a tour company.
Position not good. Breakfast not great and busy-food not replenished. Stewed tea in China-thought I'd get a good brew but not to be. Requested not to be disturbed due to illness and was rung by house-keeping 3 times and door bell rung also.

This was the first and the best of three hotels we stayed in on the Wendy Woo 10 day China Experience (Shanghai / Xian & Beijing)

As an opening comment, I think you have to remember the price you pay and what it includes in the whole tour before you judge the hotels too critically.

First impressions on entering reception were good, as the hotel is a reasonable size, and the reception area looked clean, though perhaps a little dated.
There’s a small gift shop and a bar area adjacent to the desk, and there’s also an electronic money exchange machine though I didn’t use it, the rates were good, and apparently you need to be patient and not panic as it takes a few minutes to process the transaction.
Check in was quite swift, though our guide (Tom – ‘Du’) had called ahead. If you are lucky enough to get Tom, he was really good on this tour.
Our luggage was brought off the bus into reception, though that’s as far as the porterage goes; you take it to the room yourself.

The room was a good size, with two queen sized beds. It was generally clean, and the carpets looked new.
The bedding is clean and changed each day if you require. The mattress was quite hard so a comfy night’s sleep was difficult for us.
The room lighting isn’t so great, and could do with uprating as it’s difficult to see after dark.
There’s a TV with BBC world news, a good priced min-bar, an electronic safe plus additional safety deposit facilities in reception.
The room has tea and coffee making facilities with Nescafe regular and decaffeinated.
There are two complimentary bottles of water in the room each day, and sufficient room for them in the minibar to chill them.
There’s also an iron, robes and slippers and a hairdryer, though no full length mirror in the room.
The air-con was reasonable and it’s worth noting due to Chinese law this isn’t operational in any Chinese hotels before 15th May each year and only remains on until November 15th.

The bathroom has a separate shower and bath, small individual toiletries, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and a comb. Toilet rolls appear to be on ration as they only leave one in the room each day.
The towels were clean and soft and changed each day if required.

The breakfast area is on the 5th floor and opens 6:30 to 10am.
Getting there early around 7am is advisable as things can run out and aren’t replenished quickly.
There’s a reasonable variety of food, though the quality in my opinion was not great, though edible.
The western choice includes cereals, a sweet natural yoghurt (tub), fruit, eggs or omelettes to order, bacon, sausage (well sort of), croissants and buns, and there’s a toaster with a selection of bread, though the bread was often stale.
There’s also a large Chinese food selection, though you aren’t likely to want this….see the bottom of this review.

The bar in the lobby was ok, but never busy (other than a few from our tour). The ‘special price’ we were given was 21 Yuan for a tall glass of local beer (around 400ml), so around £2.30.
There’s a large TV in the bar area, generally playing sport.
The bar tender didn’t seem to have a sense of humour, though he was efficient and attentive.

There’s a small supermarket (Family Mart) within a two minute walk if you turn left out of the front entrance to the hotel.
The location of the hotel is a Taxi ride to the major sites in Shanghai, though you can walk to the Jing’an temple within 10 minutes and in that area there’s plenty of shops. Subsequently we learned that the Nanjing West Road shopping area which you’ll visit later in the tour is only a 30 minute walk from the hotel. Turn left from the hotel then bear left onto the Nanjing West Road at the Family Mart and keep walking.

As a few general comments about the Wendy Woo tour:

Be prepared for a hectic time, all the days are an early start around 7-8am and a late finish around 9pm. You’ll only come back to the hotel on a couple of days to get showered and changed, and the other days you are out all day before returning to the hotel.
The hotels are not 5 stars, but bear in mind the itinerary of the tour and the experiences you will have and what’s included. In my opinion it is very good value.
The food isn’t what you are used to, and don’t think you’ll be getting your local Chinese takeaway cuisine. You will eat a large and varied Chinese table buffet each lunch and dinner. This gets very repetitive. Some people on our tour also felt it was very bland.
I ‘broke’ twice during the tour and resorted to finding a McDonald’s / Pizza Hut for a ‘western fix’, however even this isn’t the same as the UK.
