We stayed at this hotel twice during our recent trip. We found the hotel to be well located, clean and roomy. The train station and metro are close by, making it easy to get around the city by public transport. There are also a number of restaurants across the road (a noodle place, a dumpling restaurant, McDonald's, KFC, etc). Breakfast was good - it had a variety of both Western and Chinese food and was well looked after. It was a very good, quality hotel hotel for the location and price.

I have stayed in other Holiday Inns in various parts of the world and this ranks among the best. The girl checking us in was a little "stiff" but all the other staff especially the concierge staff were wonderful and helpful. The hotel has a stock of leaflets showing the hotel name in Chinese script which is very handy for presenting to taxi drivers few of whom can speak or read English. The leaflet also shows a number of Shanghai attractions with their names in Chinese characters which again was handy in telling taxi drivers where you want to go. The hotel is around 15 or 20 minutes by taxi from the Bund and the metered taxi fare works out about 22 Yuan, which is less than £3.00. Our room was fine and overlooked the very busy Station Square but there was no noise interference from any source. We had dinner in the main restaurant once and this was fine and reasonably priced. Our only complaint was the meal we ate in the lobby lounge- Hamburger and chips. While this tasted fine it took 50 minutes after order to arrive and was lukewarm at best. It was also very expensive for what there was of it. There was a very large choice of both western and Chinese style food at breakfast and it was very enjoyable. Our room was not huge but was big enough to take two very large suitcases, lots of hand luggage and a fairly large electric mobility scooter without any inconvenience to us. If ever we return to Shanghai we would have no hesitation in booking this hotel again

Checkin was a bit of dog's breakfast. Took 45 mins and still required a room change (and I speak Chinese). The hotel needs a couple more (experienced) hands at peak times at the front desk. I noticed (with no little sympathy) that the same two people were manning the front desk 11 hours later in the morning. Breakfast was certainly average.

If you need to be close to the station, then this is a good option. Otherwise I am not sure this is a particularly attractive option in such a competitive city.

Room Tip: Face the station and get a high floor. Station side quieter than the road, which is busy.

This hotel is nice. A great lobby with plenty of room to relax and not feel cramped by hotel room. In house food is good, not great. Rooms are a little small but suffice for a short stay. The in house massage parlor is in very poor taste in my opinoin. Treid to go for a walk at night and as soon as I left the hotel grounds was asked multiple times if I was interested in massages or sex. While I always felt safe it made for a very short walk. If you have options to not stay downtown and can stay by Pudong airport would recommend doing so.

Dear noblesvilletraveler,
Thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Holiday Inn Shanghai Downtown and for taking time to give us a comment review. We are happy to hear that you were satisfied with the accommodation and able to relax in our newly renovated lobby. We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with the massage parlor, however we can not account for it due to it not being part of our hotel as it is only linked to our buliding. We hope very much to be able to welcome you back to our hotel and staying with us again in the future.

There's nothing major to complain about with the Holiday Inn - it's clean, service is fine, the location is good for the train station. What it lacks is character and the little touches that can make a hotel stand out. First of all, the location is acceptable, it's easy to get taxis and close to the subway station. but it's in a fairly boring part of the city - most business travels and tourists will likely prefer to be further south. The hotel is divided over two buildings, which is a nuisance - e.g. I ended up not using the gym because it was in another building and getting there would have meant going out in the cold rain in my gym. I was on the 4th floor, and my windows were essentially blacked out, which meant no sunlight coming in during the day, quite depressing. There's also no free wifi in the rooms, only internet via ethernet cable. The room was also freezing, and despite turning up the thermostat is never got any warmer. Overall an acceptable hotel, but not somewhere I'll stay again.

Dear Maria T,
Thank you for choosing to stay at the Holiday Inn Downtown Shanghai and for taking the time to make a comment review. I would firstly like to apologise for the inconveniences you encountered during your stay with us. We do provide a buggy service for all our guests between our two buildings’ wings for you to be able to access all our facilities that we provide in our hotel. We also provide free WiFi routers for our guests to use in the room and by June 2013 all rooms will be covered with a WiFi signal.
We also regret to hear that you were not entirely satisfied with your accommodation. We are undergoing renovations and part of the operation is to change the glass material in our lower floor rooms to refract sunlight into the room. In regards to your rooms A/C problem we again sincerely apologise.
Your comment is of tremendous value to us and we hope to be able to attain back your confidence in our hotel and welcome you back to stay with us again.

Located next to the train station. As pointed out by other reviewers, they got 2 towers and it is quite confusing especially if you cannot read Chinese. The listed address on the hotel website is the main entrance and Great Wall wing, Plaza wing is just around the corner. Big neon sign on the outside wall does indicate which tower it is but on ground level you cannot really tell.

Main lobby is big but kind of showing its age already.

Check in was a breeze, was given a room on 4/F. On first inspection the room is pretty nice and quite newly renovated but the bathroom was definitely still in old Holiday Inn style. Internet was free as part of the package but there was no free wifi.

On first night I encounter the same issue I had with their Tianjin Express during my recent trip, the aircon was not working, what was worse, Shanghai was having 31c mid day temperature and this time the aircon just didn't worked, no airflow whatsoever, be it hot or cold. Called up the reception and a housekeeping staff was sent immediately, though apologetic, there was nothing he could do other than calling the maintenance department and he was given a bureaucratic "nothing we can do about it answer" (I speak the language and can hear it through the phone when he called, the uneasiness on his face was evident when he put the phone down). Duty Manager soon called and after another 30 mins, they managed to swap another room on the same floor for me, the whole incident unfortunately took an hour and I end up going to bed at 3:30 am. Front Office Manager called again the next day to apologize, everyone other than the maintenance department were very caring and polite and you can sense there was a geniune caring attitude that they do want to make sure the customer is being taken care of.

Spent most of my time visiting friends so did not used most of the facilities, overall I think the hotel is above average, with the bright spot being customer service; price is a bit on the expensive side given what Shanghai has at the price range
