“Great Rooms, Just Pay More Attention To Service Details”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2011

It was a 12 day trip for business.

I had the option to go for Frasier Residences which is nearby, and more expensive but I decided to stick to my guns and choose this strange looking boutique style hotel.

I am impressed with a couple of things.
1) Location is one as I can walk to the office.
2) And food was relatively easy to find with so many choices within a 15 minutes walk radius.
3) Citibank is just next door .. AWESOME
4) Shopping options are endless along the Shanghai Times Square street 5 mins away
5) The rooms are gorgeous, and huge
6) Nice comfy mattress and pillows
7) Reception spoke understandable English
8) That shower is outstanding ... feels like playing in the rain every day

Average rating for ;
1) Breakfast was boring. Menu was the same daily. Choice of bread and pastries or Chinese style.

2) My room had practically no view at all, facing the side of a building

Very disappointed with ;
1) Online TV Room Order System. Looked fully functional until you actually order. In a heartbreak, I found out 30 mins later that the system is actually not functional, and I actually missed my lunch because of it. If it aint functional, than can you at least put a sign to say it is not working, than make us order and wait for nothing.

2) Internet speeds not acceptable. The internet speeds were atrocious. Its like you are still on a 90s modem. And because I was there for work, its hard to get my stuff done and uploaded.

Overall, I think the experience was memorable, just the points that smeared the stay. Very hospitable boutique hotel in a very convenient location.

Back to Shanghai Pudong International Airport is a mere 45 min taxi ride across scenic Shanghai on the Expressway right from the hotel.

My criteria for a hotel: good location, free internet and clean rooms. Marvel hotel was this and more. Our experience from traveling to so many countries is that the posh luxurious hotel may look good but will charge you everything from parking to internet to even mineral water. The lower end ones usually throw these in for free but have old tired rooms. Marvel hotel combines modern, well-designed rooms with great amenities like free internet, good service, clean rooms and a great location (with the subway just round the corner). We were particularly pleased with the top-loading in-room save that is big enough even for my laptop. But yes we experienced the bad smell from the bathroom drainage too. Suggest that they put some bleach in. Fortunately it didn't stink up the room. Good value for money.

I would recommend this hotel for tourists as most attractions are within a 10 minute taxi ride. The best shopping areas are within walking distance (Hwai Hai Rd and Nanjing Rd.). Restaurants serving various kinds of cuisine also withing walking distance.
Rooms are small but comfortable. Bed size Queen not King. Lousy view.but I have my curtains drawn anyways. Coffee/Tea quantities limited supply in the room and no creamer or sugar.
Breakfast + RMB50. Adequate.
Staff friendly and helpful. I liked it.

I booked this hotel through online booking after researching and reviewing about the hotel location and its service quality. Marvel Hotel at Shanghai definitely has the best location for those who are visiting shanghai for Holiday or Leisure. The subway is just basically 30m away from the hotel. Once it exits from McDonald's site just turn right, see the the traffic light turn right again and the hotel is almost next door to subway. With its local integrated transportation, the subway also connected to train station and airport. The hotel room and the bathroom is clean, the reception staff is very helpful in providing us clear direction in English and the hotel is just walking distance to People's square, Nanjing Lu and other tourist attraction. If you need quick dinner or breakfast, Mc D is just down the subway station and 7 eleven is beside the subway. If you need to look for food court, just walk about 5-8 minutes there will be malls with food court along the road. I strongly recommend tourist to stay at this hotel.

We stayed three nights at the Marvel Hotel. Location was excellent as you are within walking distance for many of Shanghai's tourist sites. But in any case, taxi fares are low for those who would rather take it easy. There is a metro station close by. Convenience stores around the corner as you don't want to be paying for bottled water from the min bar. BTW - the hotel offers two complimentary bottles of mineral water each day (330ml). Check in was efficient. We had booked via a website (not the hotel's) and everything was in order when we arrived. The bellboy assisted with baggage to the room. The accommodations were clean. modern and spacious. Bathroom was spacious and clean, with the usual hotel soaps, shampoo etc. Shower stall was very roomy - two people could shower together comfortably. One oddity was that only a single breakfast voucher per day was offered as part of a two-person stay. A friend told me that this was just a ploy to make more money. You are hardly going to leave your travel companion without food! The 2nd breakfast that you need to pay for costs 68 RMB and was reasonable value for money. Choice was limited but quality was OK. Western and Asian choices. Dining room is clean and spacious. Hotel staff were friendly and polite. Room was cleaned well each day by the housekeeping staff. So, if you're looking for a reasonably priced hotel in the centre of Shanghai, than Marvel Hotel is the place for you.

I Stayed in this hotel for 3 nights in September. The location is great, walking distance to People Square, Nanjing Road, Huai Hai Road and just 1 minute walk to DaShiJie Station, which have straight access to Shanghai Expo gate, and other Shanghai attractions. It is really worth of money for the locations (I paid $345 AUD for 3 nights). The room itself is spacious, and really clean. The housekeeping were doing excellent job by changing bedsheet and providing the amenities on request. I didn't try the restaurant, as a lot of restaurant nearby. The drawbacks are the receptionist unable to communicate in basic English, and this is the first hotel that I stayed that charge for map. But besides that. This hotel is highly recommended.

Pros:
* the subway entrance is around the corner from the hotel and was very convenient.
* the TV/computer setup with free internet in the room was fantastic! the computer menu system with all its information was very useful and the wireless keyboard was a nice peripheral.
* the shower was big enough to fit two people comfortably
* the decor of the room was very nice.
* we were in a deluxe superior room on the 3rd floor (301) and it was very very big and spacious
* doormen were nice and courteous

Cons:
* the service at the front desk during check-in was unpleasant and unhelpful. the rate that was on the paperwork i had to sign was different than what i had remembered in our reservation. it took forever to figure out that the rate on the paperwork was actually my rate plus a 15% service charge. i guess i'm frustrated because you would think the front desk would know to tell their guests that the rate included a 15% service charge so it will be more than what the internet rate said.
* we also did not receive the free expo ticket that was advertised on their website. the front desk didn't even offer to help us figure it out. instead they said it was a different company that dealt with their website promotions and that we have to contact the company ourselves.
* on the first day the bathroom reeked of sewage and because it's an older hotel it did not have an air vent with fans to clear the smell. we had to open our windows and let the whole room air out. the following days were fine though.
