“Elegant stylish hotel combining historic and modern”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2012

This is a 150 years old old building located next to the100 years old wooden, historic Garden bridge on the Bund.
Enjoy the wonderful historic feeling of this neo-classic building - a hotel that Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, Bertrand Russell and many other famous personages patronized - and then climb the wooden stairs and along a wooden-panelled corridor and open the door to your large, modern, comfortable and well-equipped room. A spacious bathroom with bathgown provided, shower and bath, everything I needed including an iron, ironing board, desk, fax machine, fridge, TV, WiFi, etc.
My room was on the street side and as everyone uses their car horns more often than their brakes, I found it noisy but eventually got used to it. This is the only negative things I have to say about this hotel.
Reception was well-staffed with English-speaking and helpful personnel. The restaurant served good Western food but choose the alternative Chinese dinner as this was even better and much cheaper. Drink beer which is inexpensive as wine is very expensive!
A bar and lobby bar offered small dishes and good service and there wrere 2 massage/beauty salons - WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT GO TO ANY MASSAGE SALON YOU ARE RECOMMENDED ON THE STREETS AS THEY ARE SCAMS, MAFIA OWNED AND WILL ROB YOU!
The breakfast room was magnificent and offered the best breakfast I have had anywhere in Asia, with almost everything you could want of good Western and Asian food.
The location is perfect as within a couple of minutes, after crossing the popular wooden Garden Bridge, you are walking along the glorious Bund and have a panorama of historic buildings on your right and modern towers, spires and skyscrapers on your left acroos the river. Walk along there at night and be fascinated by the colours - floodlit buildings, neon lights, fairy lights, enchanting lights changing colour on the tourist boats sailing up and down the river. To enjoy this panoramic view I would recommend that you cross the road from the hotel and go a few metres left until you see the Seagull Hotel and restaurant. I ate there sevarl nights but had problems finding the right meal (very Chinese menu) but the beer was great (ask them to serve in a high beer glass!) and cheap and the view amazing. To me it was magical!
You can walk to Nan Jing Road in 10 minutes BUT IGNORE ALL ENGLISH-SPEAKING TOUTS WHO ARE MAFIA-EMPLOYED TO HOOK YOU AND CHEAT YOU. DO NOT GO ANYWHERE WITH ANYONE YOU MEET THERE - THEY ARE TEAMS OF CRIMINALS EVEN THOUGH THEY APPEAR TO BE NORMAL PEOPLE. YOU RISK PAYING A FORTUNE!

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the street if possible

This hotel has its own magic, unfortunately I didn't feel it.
You can see its very special and long history but I didn't feel comfortable there.
Maybe because I came by myself and my trip purpose was business.
In the first day I arrived I got a room that was on the street and the noise was terrible, I needed to sleep with earplug.
Also the condition of the room was ok.
In the second day they moved me to another room with excellent condition.
Overall The hotel is in good condition.
It's has a very interesting atmosphere.
Location it's amazing, you
Are next to the bond.
You step out of the hotel and you are in one of the most pretty areas of the city.
The downsize of the location it's 15 minutes walking for the metro station or 14 rmb - 2.4 rmb.
If you are a solo traveler I won't recommend it because at night it get very dark and I felt uncomfortable.
Service was great, most of te stuff speaks English.
If you go as a couple for vacation or you are looking for adventure , go for It.

This Hotel is absolutely a blast from the past. at first i thought it was kinda spooky because everything was really old ... from the creaky wooden floors, windows, doors, furnitures....
but eventually i realized that it was such a special treat to be staying in this wonderful hotel where Charle Chaplin and many more famous people have stayed.
Not only is the rate affordable, this place is just walking distance to the Bund and Shanghai Pearl Tower and Shanghai Pearl Ocean Aquarium.

The reception staff at the hotel were very helpful and spoke reasonable english. The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom again was clean and fairly spacious. Our room looked out onto the Bund which was nice. The breakfast was the most western we had on our travels, continental, omelettes and a selection of the usual chinese elements (noodles, rice, vegetables, meat) so provides a good start for days full of exploring. The location of the hotel is great and I would say a small walk to the under ground station station (maybe 10-15 mins along the river) which is a very useful and cheap mode of transport. All signs and announcements are in English so is very useable. The hotel itself felt historic and you find yourself imagining what it would have been like in the old days. A great stay.

Room Tip: Request a Bund View, it looks great in the evening

We chose to stay in what was described as either a penthouse or mansard room, even though it was smaller than other rooms. However, we found it plenty big enough and well equipped. The bed was a bit hard but that seems to be common in China. As mentioned by others, it's a bit of a way from the metro station but ideal for the Bund. The staff was very helpful

Astor House Hotel is a historical hotel close to The Bund. You can reach the underground walking, but it is not close.

The room and the bathroom are large. I liked the hotel style with tall ceiling, wood walls and old photos and historical paperwork about its past on the corridors. The breakfast - Chinese and occidental styles - is very good and served in a impressive place. The staff are very helpful with ordering taxis, providing directions, making reservations etc.

I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and recommend the hotel.

This hotel is the oldest in Shanghai and was the 1st to have electricity and telephones, but now fully modernised whilst retaining its old world charm. An historical chem. Spacious reception area, restaurants, bars and bedrooms. The main restaurant was the former stock exchange now transformed in to a very grand restaurant. The staff and facilities are all 1st class but the charges are very reasonable considering its prime location and history. USA President Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Einstein, Bertrand Russell, Marconi and many other famous people have stayed here. You may be lucky enough to stay in one of their rooms. I will definitely stay here again when I next come to Shanghai. A 'must' for any visitor, even to just take afternoon tea in the La Vie En Rose cafe, just off the lobby. So much atmosphere you can not help be charmed by it all.

Room Tip: stay on the 4th floor - famous people have stayed on this floor and rooms are both spacious and eleg...
