“Simply breath-taking and THE best location in Shanghai to stay !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2011

My husband and I took the high speed train to Shanghai from Beijing, where we'd spent five nights staying at the gorgeous Fairmont Bejing (see review). I researched our stay at Shanghai, and when I discovered that Fairmont owned the former Peace Hotel, and just undertook a three year meticulous renovation to open in 2011, I booked our king gold room. Do sign up to their free Fairmont President's Club - you'll receive free wifi (a savings of Y99 per day). Driving by taxi from the train station took us along the Bund and left to Nanjing Road, right where the hotel majestically stands. What a beauty ! I cannot over communicate just how beautiful is this hotel, nor how perfect is the location. (Do try the underground tunnel ride which is across the road and transports you in minutes beneath the HuangPu River to Pudong, near the Pearl Tower - another must see attraction). From the moment we entered the hotel lobby, we were transfixed by the outstanding period details, only to be brought back to earth by the friendly efficiency of the concierge staff (and what was always a lovely, relaxing scent in the air). We were escorted from the ground floor reception to the gold floor level, where we were made to feel very welcome as guests in the hotel. The room was exquisite, and very quiet (our room faced inside). We enjoyed Victor's deli and real patisseries, including the hotel's own festive mooncakes. What definitely stands out during our stay was the exceptional service we enjoyed by the staff, who went above and beyond, in my experience, to attend to our requests and to make our stay a pleasant one. We'd really like to acknowledge and thank Annie, Emma, George, Sandy, Tony and Winnie, for helping to transcribe directions in Chinese, for contacting merchants to secure a particular brand of luggage for me, for researching the internet to find the real website for Suzhou's famous Embroidery Research Institute, and for helping us buy the train tickets to get us there and back. Overall, their excellent, friendly engagement (and excellent English) helped make this one of the best holidays my husband and I have ever enjoyed, and we will return.

I cannot recall experiencing a more exacting and beautiful hotel restoration. The details in public spaces are incredible. Artwork, hallways, ceiling moldings, original Lalique, etc. Rooms are beautifully appointed. Bathrooms might be the most impressive ever - simply beautiful. WIndows open to allow fresh air ... but it was a bit noisy at night. Cannot imagine a better location than this. If you can get to the rooftop - do so! Tai Chi on the rooftop is offered most mornings. Early morning stretching - with a spectacular view over the Bund ... what a way to begin a day!

Room Tip: You won't get front-facing unless you have a suite. But ask for a room closest to the Bund.

We stayed at the Fairmont Peace Hotel for six nights in August 2011. We were a family of five and were comfortable in a deluxe queen - queen room with a rollaway bed. The room was a bit tight, but with a monster sized bathroom, nice walk-in closet, and entry room, felt very comfortable.

The good with this hotel is very good. It was once *the* hotel in Shanghai and the major renovations have been done well. The rooms are beautiful (bathrooms are the nicest I've seen in a hotel), the lobby is gorgeous, and the location can't be beat as it sits at the heart of the Bund and Nanjing Road. The pool and spa area are very nice and not too busy - we often had the pool to ourselves.

Overall, we were left a bit disappointed, however. The hotel has only been open for eight months and the service is really lacking for a five star property. We arrived at midnight and there was virtually no one there. We opened the door ourselves, lugged six pieces of luggage up the stairs and into the hotel, while one person just watched. One rainy day we asked for an extra umbrella and were told we couldn't have one. An attempt to take a photo of the lobby was met with a stern "no pictures", even for hotel guests. The concierge service was poor - English was not very good and suggestions for getting around/dining options very limited. The breakfast is massively overpriced. We were used to expensive hotel breakfasts, but this one was basically a continental breakfast for the price most offer as a full buffet.

I raised some of these concerns midway through the stay and there was some attempt to address them. Overall, however, I can't recommend as the service must be better for a hotel that charges top dollar and aspires to be the best in the city.

This was our second visit to Shanghai and the Peace hotel. We enjoyed it the first time and our return visit was equal to our first visit. A great location and still a great hotel. Highly recommended. Still a little "stuffy" a few similes may help.

The world famous Jazz Bar in the Peace Hotel thoroughly deserves its reputation as the best in the East. Just like stepping back in time!

Room Tip: Cocktails are very generous and represent the best value.

The Fairmont Peace Hotel has it all: luxury, beautiful decor, amazing location, great service and history. We stayed in 5 hotels on our trip through China and, although all the hotels were exception, the Fairmont was all of our favorite hotel. My daughters (ages 9 and 11), husband and I all loved it. The location on The Bund is perfect for strolling, shopping and eating. As so much of the old China has been torn down and replaced with high rise hotel and building the history of the Fairmont was much appreciated. The hotel was built in 1929 in the Art Deco style and closed in 2008 for a 3 year renovation. The renovation is exquisite. Modern amenities are combined with historically accurate details. The rooms are surprisingly large. Also, as a Fairmont Hotel a family of 4 can stay in one room. We upgraded to a suite as there were 5 of us which was lovely. The restaurants in the hotel were all very good and the concierge and check in service was excellent. Ben, the concierge, was extremely helpful. There is a gallery in the hotel which highlights the history of the hotel. The docent there was very knowledgeable and had lots of information on famous people that had stayed in the hotel in the distant and more recent past. The hotel manager greeted us as we checked out and could not have been kinder.

I would love to go back and spend more time in Shanghai and would not stay anywhere but the Fairmont Peace Hotel

Beautiful Hotel. It was a really royal treatment at the hotel. Rooms are spacious, toiletries are nice and concierge is outstanding. They even gave us printed name cards for every small thing. There attention to detail was incomparable to any other hotel I might have stayed in.It was a treat staying here and I am so happy we choose this hotel over Grand Hyatt.Big thumbs up!
