My husband and I took the high speed train to Shanghai from Beijing, where we'd spent five nights staying at the gorgeous Fairmont Bejing (see review). I researched our stay at Shanghai, and when I discovered that Fairmont owned the former Peace Hotel, and just undertook a three year meticulous renovation to open in 2011, I booked our king gold room. Do sign up to their free Fairmont President's Club - you'll receive free wifi (a savings of Y99 per day). Driving by taxi from the train station took us along the Bund and left to Nanjing Road, right where the hotel majestically stands. What a beauty ! I cannot over communicate just how beautiful is this hotel, nor how perfect is the location. (Do try the underground tunnel ride which is across the road and transports you in minutes beneath the HuangPu River to Pudong, near the Pearl Tower - another must see attraction). From the moment we entered the hotel lobby, we were transfixed by the outstanding period details, only to be brought back to earth by the friendly efficiency of the concierge staff (and what was always a lovely, relaxing scent in the air). We were escorted from the ground floor reception to the gold floor level, where we were made to feel very welcome as guests in the hotel. The room was exquisite, and very quiet (our room faced inside). We enjoyed Victor's deli and real patisseries, including the hotel's own festive mooncakes. What definitely stands out during our stay was the exceptional service we enjoyed by the staff, who went above and beyond, in my experience, to attend to our requests and to make our stay a pleasant one. We'd really like to acknowledge and thank Annie, Emma, George, Sandy, Tony and Winnie, for helping to transcribe directions in Chinese, for contacting merchants to secure a particular brand of luggage for me, for researching the internet to find the real website for Suzhou's famous Embroidery Research Institute, and for helping us buy the train tickets to get us there and back. Overall, their excellent, friendly engagement (and excellent English) helped make this one of the best holidays my husband and I have ever enjoyed, and we will return.
