“Not that great”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 15, 2012

I'm currently staying at this supposed 5 star hotel, it must be rated on some Chinese system because it's not a patch on any of the western hotels I have stayed at in Shanghai. My room temperature is 26 degrees (it's winter), changing the aircon controls make no difference and the management's solution is come to my room, turn the air con off and tell me to open the windows. I've done this but it is on a busy street and I imagine I'll be awake all night due to traffic and other street noise, every second car going past seems to feel the need to sound their horn. I'm not staying here by choice, my friend is having a wedding here but I can tell you it's definitely the last time they will see me at this establishment. There is something about Chinese brand hotels, they may look flashy but they lack something when it comes to customer service and basic comforts. My recommendation is the Renaissance Yue Garden (by Marriott), it's much better than this and probably cheaper too.

I was with an escorted tour of China, and was very pleased with this 5 star hotel. It is located near shops and restaurants, has beautiful grounds and 3 large buildings. I had a king room with a terriffic bathroom. It had a large separate tub, glass enclosed shower, all the amenities I needed or wanted, and cable t.v. with many English channels. The buffet breakfast was superb. American, Chinese and Japanese choices, and plenty of them. Lovely dining area for a start to the day. Rooms are very clean, quiet and well maintained. Lobby bar and smoking and non-smokings areas. Enjoyed 3 nights there.

Really not a 5 star hotel! Don't go there you really can get better in Shaghai! 5 Star is not only a drawing in the lobby. You must have elements proving you it's a real 5 Star hotel. And thi sis not the case here!
Only one person at the reception desk at 7.30 PM on Friday evening! 20 minutes to queue before being able to start registration (which last 10 minutes!). Total 30 minutes!
Old fashioned rrom with very old windows, so a lot fo noise from the street below!
Very cheap bathroom products (shower gel and shampoo). You can expect that from a 3 Star not from a 5 Star! Toilet flush broken in the morning so water over flushed in th ebathroom. Shower door does no tavoid neither water spill! So you feel like you take a bath after! Breakfast room located on th e11th floor, is so poor! large tables of 10,you share your breakfast with 5 or 6 people that you don;t know! What a sense of privacy!
So really terrible experience! Please if you travel to Shanghai don't come here!

We stayed in the South Building for 3 nights. Located at a convenient place. Close to subway stations – one station away from Xintianti and 2 from Renmin Park. Despite nearby busy streets, the place itself is quiet. Good breakfast with plenty of choices of food.

But be aware of the package for 100 RMB or 16 dollars, a night. The receptionist would tell you the price includes breakfast, Internet access, mini bar, room service and food at restaurants. It sounds too good to be true, and it is. You will end up paying 260 dollars plus whatever you spent for the services above, exceeding 100 RMB.

The receptionist are not ill-intended but their English is still on the developing side. So it seems they have a hard time to explain to us. We felt a little upset at the charge we were asked for at the end of our trip.

Other than that, the stay in this hotel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose Garden view.

This is the hotel that Nixon stayed in when he came to China, so it is a pretty historic site. The hotel complex has limited entry points and buildings are around a central plaza, so you can see why it was a desirable location for presidential security. The building exteriors are nothing special. Interior is pleasant. Rooms are adequate, clean, and comfortable. We stayed as part of a tour so I have no idea what a room costs. The breakfast was not as fancy as some of the hotels we stayed at during our tour, but was more than adequate, with a large variety of western and Chinese dishes. You can walk to nearby shopping districts including access to some nightclubs, restaurants, and bars. I had no complaints, except for the lack of free wi-fi.

Room Tip: I did not find the area scenic enough to worry about what you see out the window. It is a pretty enc...

I stayed in this hotel twice in last 3 months
The stay first time was so satisfying, I decided to go back there in my nrext trip
There are different hotels in the same compound, all under the common group JIN JIANG & I stayed in one called CATHAY GARDEN HOTEL
This hotel has historical back ground.
The hotel is old, started in 1959 & hotel has been used by visiting state dignitories & heads of states
There are a number of photographs displayed in the lobby , heads of states like Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan & Mr. Putin to name a few

The rooms are spacious, clean & food satisfying
To add to this there is an Indian restaurant functioning in the hotel called TANDOOR

Only disappointment
Internet is charged flat 90 RMB per day . In the days of business travel, hotel management deciding to levy such high charge is very very disappointing

Anothe disappointment I had, among all the dignitaries who have visited & stayed in the hotel I could not find an Indian.
Overall very very satisfied, friendly staff,
all english speaking ( a big blessing for those visiting China !!!)

Room Tip: Rooms with Garden view
