“Old style opulence in the heart of a colorful Shanghai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2012

I love the contrast of China , we arrived into shanghai after a meandering long trip around china from Beijing down too Hangzhou the satellite city for Shanghai then catapulted into the downtown madness of shanghai . We where meet by by a wonderful highly polished team of staff at the lobby area not the forecourt which is the entrance to many business,s . We where then escorted to the executive level into our sheer luxury rooms , I loved the ritz bar , met a fabulous south Carolina usa jazz singer and sipped the night away listening to the dolce the tones of Jazz in the Ritz Jazz bar , what could be more fabulous. The staff where polished the htel was manic a buzz of people but well worththeeffort to get into CBD Shanghai but this is a business hotel not the most relaxing atmosphere , the Ritz spa was fabulous.

Room Tip: High level ,not the best area at the back of the hotel at night unless you want some slap and tickle...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2012

I have stayed here a few times and have seen the standards slip over the last 12 months.

We stayed here for one night in May. The experience started with the limousine transfer from the airport. The meet & greet person expected us to stand in the way of the exiting travelers and wait for other guests to arrive. Another guest had already been waiting 7 minutes when we arrived. It was not until we insisted that we moved away from the flow to meet our driver.

Once we got in the limousine; it was very pleasant, nice BMW, drinking water, charging cables for phones and WiFi in the car! The WiFi worked well and was a great way to catch up during the 45 min drive in. However, for some reason unknown to us, the transfer BACK to the airport the next day had no WiFi?

The check-in was great for us. As 'regular' guests, we were whisked upstairs to a very efficient in-room check in. Our passports were taken away for 2 minutes maximum to be copied. However, one of our colleagues had a very different experience. Passport and credit card disappeared at check-in for 20 minutes, until he complained.

Then they were returned and the GM came to see him to apologize the next day. Good recovery.

The rooms were, as other guests have noted, great. Comfortable, modern and spacious with plenty TV channels.

The location of the hotel is great - Starbucks next door and easily accessible to all major tourist and restaurant areas.

We went to the bar for an early (6pm) drink and were summarily told we could not sit in the comfy seats without paying 1,000 RMB. This was in an empty bar at 6pm!

We ordered room service breakfast and it was on time and delicious. One of the items was forgotten but, otherwise, well done.

The meeting facilities were poor. The room was windowless and the air conditioning simply did not cope with the 20 or so people in the room. Despite several complaints, the staff really struggled to understand any form of English and were unable to correct the problem. By 3pm, all participants were sweaty and frustrated. Finally an engineer turned up and 30 minutes later a fan was delivered, after asking 3 times.

Check-out was not to Ritz standards. It was cold and 'efficient', focused on getting our credit cards and not listening to our questions about the return limousine transfer or helpful at all. Possibly English standards again? We reverted to the concierge for help on the limousine and he was great.

Overall, an ok stay but marred with poor English (definitely sub-standard for a 5 start International hotel in Shanghai) and sub-Ritz service several times.

We stayed here for 3 nights in May 2012 as part of a Viking River Cruise tour. The hotel itself is everything you would expect a 5 star Ritz Carlton to be, as far as the rooms and amenities are concerned. However both we and our tour group commented on the disappointing level of service especially in the 'Tables' restaurant. While the food was excellent, especially the evening buffet, getting table service was a challenge, and when it arrived it was perfunctory.
Overall we found service in China to be disappointing, but expected more from a hotel that sets a high standard to begin with.

If all you see is this hotel, you have not seen Shanghai. Very comfortable and great for a business trip but no Asian flavor. Staff was very business-like. The concierge was not very helpful - not typical for a Ritz. Location in high end shopping area... comfortable but sterile.

Room Tip: Good business person spot - not geared to those seeking a flavor of China.

Nice place and rooms are well maintained despite age. Swimming pool is soso and not so fun for kids. Nice bar to have a drink and listen to the band. Good location and right in the midst.

I was glad that we chose the Portman Ritz-Carlton. This was our first trip to Shanghai, staying at the Ritz makes a lot of difference. The room was cosy, service was good despite us not knowing Mandrin. I especially like the location, just walked out of the hotel, there are many restaurants to choose from, and downstairs from the hotel building is a supermarket. Plus the metro stations are walking distance, that way we have other options on public transportation.

Room Tip: We stayed on the higher corner suites.
