“Slightly dated hotel, excellent customer service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2013

The location of the hotel was a slight problem - it is in Pudong but in a residential area, and isn't anywhere near an underground station, so to get around it is almost a must to get a taxi. Nonetheless it is near the Pudong Shanghai Expo, so not bad at all.

The rooms were slightly dated. The room I got was clean and tidy, but the A/C was stuck on high heat and no matter how I tried to change the settings the room was still boiling. The windows wouldn't open, either, and the technician who came to help couldn't do much about it, either. Whilst it was claimed that it take ages for the room temperature to drop, I suspected that the A/C was malfunctioning and wouldn't change at all.

I was almost giving up when the very helpful Guest Service Officer Ms. Lin came along and offered two alternative rooms for me to choose from. The other rooms were way better (with properly functioning A/C) and I'm a happy customer.

Room Tip: There are only 20 rooms per floor, so the lifts are never far away.

Dear Deinococc, thank you for staying with us and for taking the time to leave comment here. Our location is indeed in the safe and quiet residential area, very close to Pudong’s Century Park and just five minutes from the Shanghai New International Expo Center. The underground station of Line 2 at the Shanghai Science & Technology Museum is just 15 minutes away but Line 9 is closer with 7 minutes walk. There are malls such as Thumb and Laya Plaza which is also very close to our hotel for great shopping and dining, and brands include Lacoste, ZARA, SEPHORA, Jade Garden, Starbucks, etc. Our hotel has just celebrated it's 10 years anniversary and we are undergoing a guest rooms renovation over the course of this year. We look forward to a new and refreshed room design in Renaissance style with upgraded technology also for the air conditioning. Thank you for the positive comments about Ms. Lin which we will share with her. Meanwhile, we would like to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to our hotel again.

Good stay at this hotel. Only issue was that they could not locate my rewards number to apply points. Breakfast quality was good - staff overall attentive and pleasant. Hotel clean. Had a bunch of mail to be posted and the desk handled and it all arrived in a timely manner to destinations. All good.

Because we had stayed here when we originally moved to Shanghai in 2009, we stayed there again while we were in the process of repatriating. It has changed quite a bit. The hotel overall looked very tired and in need of renovating. The carpets are worn and in need of a good cleaning, the furniture is dated and the bathroom could use a good scrubbing. With bleach. Stay away from the dinner buffet. It was a mess and average at best. Later in the week we ordered from the menu in the club room, however, and everything was great. The Indian dish I ordered was delish! The service is wonderful. We had a problem with the air conditioning in our room and at 1am, when we couldn't stand it any longer, we called and they were very apologetic and helpful - switched our room- and when that room also wouldn't get cool, they sent an engineer who fixed the problem. The breakfast in the club lounge was good- lots of choices and variety and the happy hour there was also nice. We feel that for The Renaissance to remain competitive they will have to do some serious updating.

Dear TinaG237, thank you for choosing Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel again and we appreciate your comments! Our hotel has just celebrated it's 10 years anniversary and we are undergoing a guest rooms renovation over the course of next year. We look forward to a new and refreshed room design in Renaissance style with upgraded technology also for the air conditioning. We are delighted to hear about your appreciation of our service and our breakfast in the club lounge. Meanwhile, if you come back next time, you could try dining at our Chinese restaurant Wan Li which is popular amongst locals or our small, casual Japanese eatery REIZENYA. We are just in process to upgrade our dinner buffet in the Brasserie and it's also worth to try it again when you come back.

So disapointed that i changed hotels after 1 night!

I am a Marriott Platinum member and travel to Marriott properties around the world. This Renaissance is disapointing. I opted for the suite. The hotel decor was ok, but the room was dated (cracks in ceiling, black mold in bathroom, and needed overall makeover).

The thing that killed it for me was the restaurant. Both dinner and breakfast were poor. All hot foods were cold during breakfast. After 2 meals (dinner & breakfast) I had enough and decided to check out and stay at another Hotel in the area (Kerry Pudong - which was great BTW).

Would not return to the Renaissance Pudong, Shanghai.

Room Tip: With 15+ Marriotts to choose from in Shanghai - you should avoid this one.

Dear ChrisandMatt,

we are extremely sorry that you didn't enjoy your last stay at Renaissance Shanghai Pudong Hotel.

Being a well-established hotel in the Century Park area, on the market for 10 years we are looking forward to an uplift of our well maintained rooms. Our guest room renovation is scheduled to start soon and will bring a fresh lifestyle breeze to this area of Pudong.

We would appreciate if you would give us the possibility to contact you directly so we can better understand the issues you had regarding the restaurant as we actually receive many positive comments about our breakfast offerings and friendly service. It is not our style to have guests leaving dissatisfied with our service and especially as a very loyal Marriott customer we would like to win you back.

Again, we are sorry that the stay did not meet your expectations but we hope you will give us the opportunity to prove to you that it is worth staying with us!

Best regards
Silvano Dressino

Stayed two nights at this hotel. Booked a suite as it seemed most hotels in Shanghai were full because of an exhibition. It turned out to be a great choice, as I ended up in a very spacious and comfortable room. Room decor might be a bit dated, but the room itself was clean and in good condition. My package included access to the executive lounge, which was a great place to have breakfast and afternoon hor d'oeuvres, as well as hold informal meetings. Two hours' free use of the conference room in the lounge was also offered.

As others have noted, the location offers easy access to Pudong International Airport; a metro station is nearby along with a number of good restaurants within easy walking distance. The hotel might be a bit inconvenient for anyone needing to go to Puxi, but my meetings were all on the Pudong side anyway.

Internet connectivity was good, as was the fitness center. The service staff were professional and efficient. I was less impressed with the dinner buffet in the 2nd floor restaurant, but lunch at Japanese restaurant off the lobby was excellent and was good value.

Overall, a very good hotel for business.

Room Tip: For my trip, I found access to the executive lounge invaluable

this is my preferred hotel when visiting Shanghai. The hotel is a little dated in design compare to the nearby Radisson, Crowne Plaza, Himalayas, Carrie hotels. Location wise, it is at a residential area with just a few restaurants across the street and a couple of convenient stores. However, I always enjoy my stay here for the warm reception of the staffs who are usually very helpful and warm - especially those at the club lounge. I was particularly impressed by one of the staff who greeted me because he remembered seeing me last month! While this hotel is not next to a mall, it is just a short walk from Thumb Plaza (10 mins stroll) which has many restaurants. Walking to the nearest subway is not that far too, 15 mins at most. the hotel's Chinese restaurant is pretty good, much better than the western one on the same floor.

room in the hotel is of good size and well maintained, the bed is especially comfortable. the janitor is always very helpful and folded my used shirt neatly on the sofa, they did it twice and I was then too embarrassed to leave the used shirt on the chair. LOL

my overall experience has been very positive with the stay at this hotel every time. this hotel also presents a good value. I will definitely be back again when I visit Shanghai.

As Shanghai gets more expensive, this property gets more appealing. The front desk staff speaks very good english, professional and friendly. The rooms will soon need an overhaul, especially the bathrooms but they are clean, quiet and comfortable. Do not miss the breakfast, its great. This hotel is within 3-4 kilometers of the Maglev train station so its a very quick ride to and from the airport. But be prepared for the possibility of a hassle with any red or blue color taxi getting from the station to the hotel as it is such a short ride they will make any excuse not to take the fare. The white or green colored taxis are usually more professional and courteous. The hotel is close to a subway station that will get you to Puxi side in a couple of minutes and has nearby shopping so this location is very convenient.
