“Wonderful Hotel, Service and Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2010

We had a wonderful experience at the JW Marriott in Shanghai. Locationwise, it is walking distance to the Shanghai Museum and the metro station at People's Square. It is technically walking distance to places like East Nanjing Road and The Bund, but I was travelling with my parents. So taxi rides are only 10-15 minutes.

The main floor check-in/reception is not impressive, however, at the time, we were told it was a temporary reception. However, from the moment we arrived, the service was very courteous, helpful and friendly. It is a minor inconvenience to take two separate elevators up to the guest rooms, but the rooms, view, service and location more than made up for that.

I was able to get a corporate rate for approximately $220/night CDN. We were upgraded to a junior suite.which was spacious and comfortable. Housekeeping was particularly nice and always did more than tidy the room. They really scrubbed and cleaned the room each day and always left us extra water and ammenities.

The executive lounge was beautiful and offered nice snacks throughout the day. They didn't have little things like ketchup readily available during breakfast, but provided them upon asking. Otherwise, the food, drinks and service was great.

We didn't use the spa this trip, but my husband has on his past stays here and said it is the best he has ever experienced. Then we saw it was rated as THE best spa in Shanghai.

Very happy with the service, value and location.

Spent 5 nights here (May, 2010) w/partner to see Expo. Priceline rate $88 or $520/5 nights total.

Great location. 20 walk to Bund, easy shopping. 3 min to Metro (People's Sq)

Room was standard (2 double) but decent-sized and nicely appointed. Comfy beds. Wonderful bath with soaking tub; shower with double massage sprayers. Closets nicely appointed with all sorts of hangers, two types of robes. Free water bottles daily.

Lap pool was wonderful and mostly empty. Gym worthy of a health club.

Hate Marriott's $7/day Internet room charge. Use free lobby Wi-Fi instead.

Service was top-notch. Housekeeping changed blankets and balky remote quickly once requested.

We had a wonderful stay at the JW Marriott. Being platinum members, we were upgraded to a spacious executive suite on the 56th Fl with great views of the city. There were plenty of complimentary water bottles, toiletries and apples replenished in our room on a daily basis. The king bed was very comfortable. We had a rolllaway for our daughter in the room as well and there was still enough space to walk around. Closet and drawer space for 3 of us was sufficient as well.
Yes, one has to take an elevator from the ground floor to the 38th lobby and then another set of elevators to the room, but really no big deal and it's good security. The staff was great, very helpful and pleasant. We had access to the Executive lounge on the 59th fl with free wireless internet , breakfast buffet, evening cocktails and snacks and a nice place to sit and relax, read etc.
Had dinner at Wan Hao restaurant the fiirst night after arriving and it was good with excellent service and also had a late night lighter meal at the Marriott Cafe, which was also quite nice. Their buffet was still set up and even though we never tried it, it looked delicious with lots of variety.
I was also pleasantly surprised to find a big piece of cake in our room on my birthday - the front desk staff had noticed that I had a birthday during our stay when they copied our passports at check-in. I don't remember that ever happening before in all the years that we've stayed at countless hotels.
We also enjoyed the location, nice walking area, very close to the Metro, museums, shopping areas and parks. Further destinations are always a cheap taxi ride away. The Marriot is one of the tallest structures around, so for those times when found ourselves a little lost, we would just search the horizon for 'the building' and find our way back easily. The indoor/outdoor pool area is also a nice place to relax after a day in the city.
Would definately stay there again on our next visit.

Friends pick this place to attend their sunday brunch. From the the first impression of the hotel one thinks of all things to be nice and well looked after, not the case as we soon were to find out. The view from the upper floors was indeed spicatular..none ever so briiliant on the sunny sunday afternoon. The staff were some what friendly, dressed in less than function uniforms, sashes and purses slung over thier shoulders kept falling in the way of their service. The champagne being poured from magnum bottles was a nice touch indeed. The food was not abundant , the selection was less than impressive. We 3 devoured the seafood section which only comprised of 3 selections. The selection of hot food was not to impressive and lacked the shine and glamour one would expect from a 398++ buffet . The only thing that seemed to save the day was the view from far above. Average at best but not worth a repeat engagement.

Service at this hotel was excellent.
The rooms are nice, with everything you need. However, the room felt a bit dark, as they used dark green carpet and brown wood for decoration. I would have preferred lighter colour in the room. The bed was also a bit too soft for me, but some people would like it soft. The toilet had everything you need, and even a massage spray in the showers. The view from the rooms was also magnificient, facing tomorrow square and people's square. The flat screen TV is big with about 20 english channels and the rest chinese channels.
The location of the hotel is not as centrally located as some other hotels. But the hotel is close to the shanghai museum of art. The hotel is also 2 minutes walking distance to one of the best restaurants in Shanghai called "jade garden", as well as a good 20 mins walking distance to Xitiandi and Huahai road which has lots of restaurants and shopping. The hotel is a short taxi ride from the bund and other sighseeing places.
The not so convenient aspect about this hotel is that you have to catch 2 lifts to get to your room. The lobby was on the 38th Floors. So once you get to the lobby, you have to catch a different lift to your room.
But everything is else was good and would recommend this hotel to anyone coming for business or leisure

As a Gold Member with the Marriott Hotel I was able to receive an incredible rate for the hotel as well we were upgraded to an executive suite on the 56th floor. After check-in on the 38th floor we were shown around our suite. It was gorgeous with the most fantastic view over Shanghai. The staff were faultless, extremely accommodating and prompt with any requests. The Executive Lounge served wonderful breakfasts, snacks and pre-dinner nibbles (so good that we did not need to eat anything else).

We had lunch and dinner in the restaurant which was not very expensive. The Consierge booked a tour for us and guided us to various sight-seeing areas throughout the city. Our room was wall to wall glass on 2 sides and we felt as though we were way above the clouds looking down over Tomorrow Square. The smog was very bad and it wasn't until the last day that we had a view of the river. The traffic was horendous when we took our tour on a Sunday. Because of the traffic we took the Maglev Train to the airport when we left Shanghai. I would recommend this option.

Shopping in Nanjing Road was excellent. Plenty of bargains to be had.

I would dearly love to stay in this hotel again. We were treated like royalty. Thank you to the staff who made our stay memorable.

The J W Marriott in Shanghai is great hotel. The rooms are well appointed with city views. They have definitely paid a lot of attention to little details such as enough hangers in the closet, lots of towel racks and hooks to hang your clothes etc. Very nice rooms. The Lobby on the 38th floor and the 40th floor bar/lounge has views to die for. The Indian food in their Cafe on the 38th floor is very good.

The location is also very central at least to most of ex pat hangouts.
