We contacted Miki a few weeks before visiting Shanghai to ask what she offered. She responded quickly (even though it was 2am in her timezone) asking what our interests where so that she could plan a detailed itinerary for us.
We just wanted a fairly general tour so asked her to suggest something, but if you have particular interests, she would definitely plan a tour around them. We ended up booking a general tour of Shanghai and a day trip to Hangzhou with her. Her daily rate is very reasonable (she could get away with charging much more), though all costs incurred (e.g. public transport, lunch etc) needs to be paid seperately. In Shanghai these costs are very small, however in the tours outside Shanghai, the cost of a driver can be fairly significant, however this is clearly highlighted before the tour was booked, so wasn't a surprise for us.
Miki met us at our hotel on time at an agreed time of 9am and was extremely apologetic about not being early. This attention to detail and desire to exceed expectations was fairly typical of the rest of the tour.
Miki's touring style is very informal and could be described as a wander around Shanghai with a knowledgeable friend. She knows her history and was full of useful and interesting information, however the real value of the tour for us was being able to chat to Miki about everyday life in China. She is so friendly and easy to talk to and has a lovely sense of humour too.
On the second day we visited Hangzhou which is a very interesting and picturesque place away from the hustle and bustle of Shanghai. This was a long day (12 hours in total) but it really flew by. At the end of the day, we were left back to our hotel. When it came time to pay, Miki clearly outlined a breakdown of the costs (her time, cost of trains etc) and gave us all the receipts as a memento of the trip.
I'd fully and completely recommend using Miki as a guide in Shanghai. A particular tip would be to make the most of her local knowledge and let her choose places to eat. Great value can be found in restaurants that non-Chinese people would never find or would be incapable of ordering in due the language barrier.
