“Simple, peaceful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

I eat at the Jade Buddha Temple (1st Floor Noodle bar) each time I visit Shanghai. It's close to our office, so I go with a Chinese-speaking colleague for lunch. It's a limited menu, pretty much vegetarian noodle soups with variable spices. I carry in a bottle of water. It's simple and relaxing to dine here. Consistent. No English though, and the menu is on a pillar where you pre-pay. If you can't speak Chinese you probably can fumble through alright. About RMB 20 for a nice, filling bowl of soup.

“Great Buddhist Vegetarian Restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 3, 2013

We came here after visiting the adjacent temple - first went to the ground floor restaurant and were told that was only a 'noodles' place and pointed us upstairs to the proper restaurant. The menu is in English with lots of colour pictures of the comprehensive fare. We chose the tofu and vegetable soup - asking for two - luckily the waitress motioned to us that one would be enough between two. When it came - she was correct - it comes in a huge bowl large enough for four diners - tons of silky tofu in a clear broth. We also ordered the roast duck - which surprisingly comes served stone cold - but delicious nonetheless. The other two mains were steak teriyaki and a beef and vegetable dish. Everything we had was first-rate and the bill very reasonable - 116 Yuan. The bunch of young waitresses clustered together talking and laughing. They didn't speak much English - but they were very helpful and friendly. The female cashier on the ground floor was curt to say the least. The chefs roamed out of the kitchen from time to time - perhaps checking to see that their creations were appreciated. If you want pure Buddhist-style vegetarian food - this place is highly recommended. The menu is very heavy on 'meat' substitutes - but done extremely well - very appetising dishes and served in salubrious surroundings by friendly staff.

“Certainly worth a visit for the Vegetarians”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

We visited the Jade Buddha temple and certainly wanted to try the Jade Buddha Vegetarian restaurant. And we enjoyed the food very much. They have most of the non-veg dished, but made from Veg ingredients.... so its fake non-veg .. interesting. We tried a few dishes and enjoyed everyone of them. Prices are great too along with great food, I mean in a good way. Average mean for two would be just about ~150 Yuan.

“Inspiring”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2012

There are many temples throughout the city but I am glad we toured this one as the jade Buddha is an amazing and beautiful piece! I also enjoyed drinking and learning about the various medicinal teas in the tea room.

“Spectacular!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 16, 2012

It is possible to take pictures in the temple, with the only exception being the Buddha statue itself. Separate fee applies to enter the room, where the statue is situated. But definitely worth every penny!
The statue depicts Sakyamuni Buddha in the earth-touching position and as the name indicates it is made of jade stone.

There's also a tea-house in the temple, where You can taste (definitely recommended) and purchase different kinds of tea.
