“Poor service cut our stay short.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2014

This boutique hotel is in an ideal location, Art Deco styling and rooms quite spacious including bathroom. We were booked for 13 days, the service so poor we moved out after 4 days.

Very poor service mainly in the dining area, first morning, we had to ask for basic items, spoon, milk, sugar, tea, we actually provided our own tea bags. Day by day the service got worse, by the 4th day there was no breakfast at all, it was 8.15am no sign of staff another couple advised that we had to order, a staff member appeared briefly then closed the kitchen door. TV and Aircon problems added to the frustration. The World Cup had just started and we were told it would,be shown on big screen downstairs, arrived at 5.50am no sign of anyone, had to find another venue. The only time we found efficient staff was at checkout. IRONIC!
We are used to service being under par in China but this was exceptionally bad.

A fantastic hotel in almost every way. In the heart of Shanghai yet quiet and restful. If you want a spacious and clean room with a great bathroom, a beautiful bar/lounge. If you want a location that will give you peace and quiet in tree lined avenues yet close enough to everything you'd probably want from Shanghai then stay at this hotel. You get a big room the size of a suite for the price of a box room at any of the Shanghai international hotels. No gym and no pool just loads of quiet space. One downside is the staff, whilst very polite, do need more training on customer care. I asked for milk for the cereal at breakfast and was told they didn't have any and no attempt to go to the local corner store was made to give customer service - but a small thing as everything else was good.

Room Tip: I believe all the rooms are good

As simple as this: the Hotel made possible to have the best vacation we've had in years, making every effort to provide good service and the rooms have a special style.
Highly recommended!
This was truly a good experience.

An elegant French colonial style boutique hotel, quietly tucked away from the main street at the end of a gated lane, yet only minutes from the heart of the city. Forget the suspicious reviews at the bottom of this bread - here comes the truth!!

Good points: beautifully appointed, high quality, fabulous rooms (only 16 of them, each with polished darkwood floors and tastefully decorated), modern and luxurious bathrooms, excellent location, free wi-fi, great value. Lots of bars and clubs within a 10 minute walk (many still serving way past the normal Shanghai 'curfew' time of 21:00!). A tranquil escape adjacent to western style night life, which despite one other reviews, is NOT difficult to find!

Bad points: the service! Hardly any of the staff speak anything other than Shanghainese, so even basic requests are difficult. Not enough staff at breakfast time (breakfast is included); we had to wait over an hour for food that wasn't what we ordered and was raw when it eventually came. No cutlery or napkins despite asking several times, so the raw, late food then got cold... This happened on all four mornings of our stay, so not just bad luck.

Pre-ordering a taxi, despite checking and re-checking, resulted in no taxi - twice.

Also, be warned, there is no lift, so not good if you can't climb 5 flights of stairs to the top.

Overall, a very nice, small hotel, good for discerning couples or business, but let down by shockingly poor service - such a shame as this could be so easily fixed but, unfortunately, it does ruin an otherwise lovely little hotel.!

Room Tip: Choose a room on the lower floors if you're not fit!

Very interesting hotel. Takes you back to Shangahi in the early 1900s. This building probably used to be a mansion at the time and they converted it into a boutique hotel. The service is good but if you are looking for the big and new hotel experience, this is probably not for you.

I am always concerned when I see glowing or gushing Tripadvisor reviews written by first timers all around the same date, it does not help to project a positive image of the hotel and Tripadvisors are a savvy lot and usually see through this type of nonsense. The Shanghai Imperial Palace Club should stand on its own merits it is a reasonably priced small hotel within walking distance of some excellent bars, clubs and restaurants, the rooms are small but decorated in a faux French style, with quite simply the best and biggest bathrooms in China, they are almost the same size as the bedroom, with a huge two people bath and very powerful walk in shower.
We only ate breakfast at the hotel and that was a bit of a hit and miss affair it is ordered al a carte style while most people prefer a buffet the fact that they stopped serving it at 9:30am is a big minus in my book. The service was pretty much Chinese standard with staff only to willing to assist but having not much grasp of English, the hotel is a 10 minute walk from the 7/9 metro and only slightly further to the 1 metro line which gave us access to the whole of Shanghai. You do have the usual problem of getting a taxi driver to understand where you want to go however the Bund is only a 35 RMB cab fare away so getting there hardly breaks the bank. The Imperial Palace Club is not a place where I would stay for business it does not have the facilities and it is certainly not a resort hotel but if you want to experience the real Shanghai and retreat from the hustle and bustle of one of the world's largest cities then this is not a bad corner to do it in.

Reading the other reviews before I booked this hotel, I almost feel there is something strange going on! I can not understand all the positive comments, as this was not the place I arrived at.
A dark alley with a half closed gate even made the taxi driver a bit confused, I was met by a dark entrance with no proper reception. It was all quiet, and I felt I had arrived at ghost hotel...Got to my room that was nicely decorated (but had a strange smell). Asked to get some room service and was told I had to order before 21 to get some food - choice of 3 asian dishes and 3 international.
I could not get a glas of wine to my dinner, and the minibar was only filled with beer and sweet drinks. The english was very poor of the staff, and there was no english tv channels. The area outside was NOT surrounded by any restaurants as other contributors claim, there was one english pub outside the hotel, that was it. Dark and not a very suitable area travelling by myself for business. I had no choice but to move out and find another hotel - 5 nights in this place would have been a very bad experience. The hotel is also under renovation, there was a note in my room saying sorry if I would find the building noise disturbing - happy I did not find out!

Room Tip: Make sure the renovation of the hotel is done before you book any room!
