“Can't wait to return”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2013

This place is great! A really nice and relaxed restaurant with cool decor, lighting and perfect for small groups.

I've had Uyghur before, and felt this was more of a fusion, but a very unique and delicious cuisine all the same. I'm no Chinese food expert, like most westerners, so it appeals to the masses.

The menu is simple with accurate pictures (but not akin to the sticky, laminated menus that you find in local dives). Food comes out really quick too.

5 of us ate, drank and had dessert for around 200RMB a head; we thought it was very reasonable for the quality. It was very busy on a Thursday but we booked ahead.

Best thing is that they are on Sherpas! So next time the weather is frightful, I can have this delicious, trustworthy Chinese delivered.

“Good food on nice terrace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

We had a very pleasant dinner in a nice terrace at the second floor, with great service from a careful staff.

The food was well presented and I liked the perfectly-cooked barbecued lamb with local Eastern spices.

“Upmarket Uyghur gives a rich dining experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2013

The Uyghur are a Muslim minority from the Xinjiang area of west China - also contentiously known as "east Turkestan". Uyghur cuisine is one of the great culinary traditions of China, and Xibo dispenses it in deliciously pungent, foreigner-friendly doses.

A highlight is definitely the 大盘鸡 [Dàpán jī], literally a 'big plate of chicken'. Xibo goes the extra mile for its foreign demographic, removing all of the chicken bones from the meal and beefing up the tomato base sauce into something more fragrant and thick.

Another winner is the accompanying drinks and dessert menu. Pomegranate juice is served by the pitcher, and the beer of choice is the regional Sinkiang dark beer - the perfect match for the lamb treats served at Xibo. The dessert menu wouldn't look amiss in any quality Western restaurant, and at the time of visit had brulee, mousse and an upsidedown cake.

If the weather is amenable, try and sit outside on the rooftop balcony.

Xibo is one of 2 - 3 restaurants that are must-sees for anyone visiting me in Shanghai. It's an intimate and accessible window into Xinjiang cuisine that's also stylish and just a little romantic. Expect to pay more than at your average hole-in-the-wall Xinjiang restaurant.
