“Not worth the time”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

This is a supposed museum of Shanghai history. In fact most of the "artifacts" are models or reproductions. There are some interesting photos and film clips on loops.

And it is not a serious museum of Shanghai history. It's kind of a sanitized version for people who aren't interested in history. For example, there is no mention of the the Japanese occupation or of Communist Revolution. It simply mentions in passing that the foreign concessions ceased to exist in 1943.

On the plus side, no one of any nationality or political persuasion will be offended by this museum.

Devote the time to some of the other terrific sites in Shanghai. I wish I had.

“A Little Light But Fun”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

This Museum depicts the history of Shanghai, which is a relatively new city by Chinese standards. The displays are not very detailed but they do give a nice visual impression of the city's history. As such, it gives a decent overview of the evolution of the city's culture. It is a great setup for the kids and it is worth taking the time to go through if you have any interest in history at all. It is good for what it is.

“Wonderful Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

I like these types of museums, because they tell so much of the history of the city, from the early days. This is a well set out museum, although I had a feeling that the premises were only temporary. On entering, you just follow the trail through many rooms and turns, showing settings of times gone by, of how people lived, there shops, street life, models of the Bund, etc. There are a lot of realistic wax figures throughout the display that you half expect are actual people. I loved this museum, I did have limited time there and I could have spent a few hours easily.

“Small and novelty based wax museum.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Located on the basement level. Out of historical sequence wax figures depicting shops in old Shanghai. Somewhat interesting if already in the area.

“Head right down into the basement”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

The museum is located in the basement of the Pearl Tower. While everyone else pays an awful lot of money and stands in a very long line to ride halfway up the Pearl Tower, for about 35 RMB, you can visit the History Museum.

I've been there three times and it's great fun (if you like history museums). The dioramas are very detailed, the panoramas are intricate (watch the one that drifts from day to night), and it's overall a cool experience. It only covers history up to about 1945 though. I suppose they don't want to touch on... the mess that happened afterward.
