“Perfect location and comfort”

Found this hotel to be in a perfect spot for downtown shopping and sightseeing to nearby people square and the Bund. The pedestrian zone is right around the corner, please be aware that traffic signs are heavily ignored here and bikes, cars drive through red light. I admit, local pedestrians don't seem to bother with red lights either and just walk. A bit crazy and get used to.

Room Tip: Try getting a room with view of Pudong. Upgrade if you can for free breakfast otherwise buffet is pr...

The hotel is more than OK, location is excellent, rooms are fine, clean and big enough, service is good and at the level of the major hotel in Shanghai.... but forget about the restaurant. Coffee shop located 3rd floor as far as the food is the lousiest I ever tried in Shanghai. Place is nice but the food is far from being acceptable. Unless I have to, I'll not stay here once more.

14 of us stayed there at the end of a tour of china and we all enjoyed it. I did have some difficulty accessing internet and if you are not a Marriott rewards card member they charge but other than that everything was excellent. On the night we left we had decided to go to M on the Bund but the time scale made it impossible. We decided to eat in the Shanghai city bistro in the hotel instead and every one of us was delighted we did. There are two sections Eastern and European with food ranging from perfectly prepared sashimi to a beautifully cooked rare roast fillet of beef. All of us were hopping between both sections. A really excellent meal with something for every palate. The buffet was 258 Yuan including service charge. That reminds me of one other quibble. Why have all the hotels in China started adding 15% service to every bill? I asked the staff in all the hotels did they see any of it and I was told no. This is just price increase by stealth. It should be stopped or the staff should get it. That aside this hotel is really excellent and absolutely central for all Shanghai attractions.

I recently stayed for 2 nights at this hotel. It was a really pleasant stay. Hotel is located right in the city centre and close to subways as well. I ordered a hotel car airport pick up and drop off, it was a really good service.

Check in and check out are pretty easy, staff are friendly and helpful. Room is not huge but very functional. Bed is comfortable and bathroom is modern. Wifi is free for guests as well. Breakfast is good, many choices of local and international food. Hotel also has a very good gym and dry sauna and steam bath.

I also had buffet dinner at the hotel, it was very chaotic, people are pushing around but staff are very professional and friendly. We also had a big function on the 6th floor one evening, it was organised well by the staff.

Overall it was a really pleasant stay, I will definitely come back again if I am in town.

As I always disclose I am a travel agent and my recent stay at The Marriott Shanghais Hotel City Center was on a discounted Travel Agent rate. Such incentives do no influence my opinions.

In general The Shanghai Marriott is perfect for both business and leisure travel offering a premier location, well designed rooms, excellent amenities on-site i.e. dining, fitness, spa, area for entertaining, coffee outlet and an excellent staff all helpful and versed in multiple languages.

Location: The Shanghai Marriott is truly in the center of this sprawling city. The actual center-point of the city is just a few hundred feet away at the Park Hotel Building when the planners of Shanghai used the flag pole as the zero point of the city for surveying and planning. The location allows one to walk to a large subway station serving 3 lines, access to the beginning of Nanjing Street (the major pedestrian mall), People’s Square Park (home to The Shanghai Museum, The Shanghai Grand Theater, The Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall) various shopping malls all within a few minutes walk of the hotel. The famous Bund waterfront is about a 10-15 minute walk from the hotel. The heart of the business district is across the river, thus best to take a subway or taxi which is inexpensive.

Hotel: No matter what entry you use to access the hotel i.e. pedestrian entry of formal lobby, once inside, a true oasis within a bustling city. The main lobby area offers a very well designed and efficient front desk service with multiple “stations” allowing check-in in an efficient manner. The rest of the main level includes a bar area known as The Lounge including an atrium (The Winter Garden) seating area with live bamboo and a singer, a coffee/to-go concession (Java+) perfect for a morning coffee and light breakfast offering both indoor and outdoor seating as well as a small tailor shop. Room access in the elevator is by key only.

Dining: Most of the hotel amenities are on the first 8 floors of the hotel. There is a sprawling Western style restaurant (Shanghai City Bistro) with a large buffet which offers every conceivable breakfast food known, thus you will not be missing your breakfast no matter where you are traveling from. The formal Chinese restaurant (Man Ho) is beautifully designed. We enjoyed a prix-fixe dim-sum one afternoon there, excellent service. Would be an excellent option for evening entertaining of clients. In addition there is a Japanese style restaurant, Inagiku which we did not have time to experience however I would assume excellent quality and service.

Gym/Spa: The gym is one of the better equipped hotel gyms I have visited. All new equipment for both aerobic and anaerobic workouts. There is also a large pool. I believe the gym may be owned and/or operated by another entity as the club offers memberships beyond the hotel. The locker rooms are luxury private club level with all amenities to prepare to be presentable post work out. The attendant is available from 6A to 23:00, yet the gym is open 24 hours. The neighboring spa looked inviting.
Room: Our room was very nicely designed and decorated for both leisure and business. We had a king bed room on the 25st floor with an unobstructed view of Shanghai. Many built-ins and efficient design made the room even more comfortable. A few unique features included:

A/V electrical Panel: with connections to the flat-screen TV and multiple outlets at the desk, a great amenity if traveling with laptop of even tablet.

Bed: Very comfortable, many pillows, individual night stands with lighting built in.

Night Light: feature provides under cabinet subdued lighting in the bedroom and bathroom, a nice feature esp. if the blackout shades are drawn.

Bathroom: Similar to the Renaissance in Hong Kong, a large window between the bathroom and bedroom yet this bathroom had an electronic shade allowing variations of light and privacy. Pocket doors for the bathroom offered a luxury touch. Deep soaker tub as well as a shower stall with both rain shower head and hand-held. Vanity is large with shelving underneath. ]

Overall this is a room one would be most appreciate to come back to after a day of meetings or touring. Of note, upon arrival in Shanghai from Hong Kong I was operating on limited sleep and jet-lag. The room was comfortable enough for me to fall asleep in the late afternoon and not awaken until the following morning and yet my companion could still read, watch TV, and use the bathroom all without disturbing me.

There are many hotels in Shanghai and of course a city of its size various distinct neighborhoods. There are many luxury outposts on The Bund. Beautiful views yet can be crowded esp. on weekends. In the commercial district, many options but a trek to many tourist spots. Even the French Concession and where the Langham is located, luxury yet lacking convenience beyond the surrounding shopping area.

If you visit to Shanghai is short (mine was 3 days) and you are looking for a truly central location allowing you to walk, take the subway and of course tour by car and driver. The Marriott Shanghai City Center is an excellent option and one that will exceed your expectations.

Room Tip: The upper floors offer unobstructed views of the Shanghai skyline.

There's a lot to like about this hotel. It's location is just a block off the madness of Nanjing Road, the international food selection is very good indeed and the hotel is smart and very well presented. The gym has excellent new equipment and is spotlessly maintained. I was given a corner room on check in which gave great views over Shanghai. I'd definitely stay again and am delighted that it wasn't just a one night stay so I got to enjoy it.

Arrived at this hotel gone midnight after a late internal flight, offered an upgrade to club lounge for 500 rem per night and did not feel we would benefit from it so decided not to bother. Was given a small room on the side of the hotel, not the best we had stayed in but not the worst either, however due to the building works going on outside we could not get to sleep so requested a room change at 2am, which the hotel did immediately to a much nicer/larger room on the same floor further away from the building works. Shame not offered this on arrival. Second room well appointed with nice bathroom and king size bed. The pool complex was nice but the water was very cold! The hotel staff were very helpful and overall not a bad hotel for the money. Easy to get to via public transport bus route 5 stops at people's square and at 20 rem per person much better value than the rip off taxi touts at the airport that wanted 350 rem as the Metlev shuts at 8pm and the metro at 9pm but the last bus is 11.45pm.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room number lower than 10 if you want some sleep!
