“Affordable, comfortable, close to Pudong Int'l”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

Comfortable almost lavish rooms, good restaurant/buffet, very accommodating English speaking staff, nice fitness room, free airport shuttle, 5-10 minutes from Pudong. Beautiful property. Neighborhood not so good, no restaurants or shops. Great crash pad for before or after airport landing.

I arrived in Shanghai in the evening, and I wanted a hotel relatively near the airport. The Royal International was perfect -- far enough away from the airport and yet a short taxi ride. The hotel is very contemporary and the rooms are very tastefully decorated featuring technology that has not reached the West yet. I highly recommend.

We booked this hotel to sleep in during a 12 hour stop-over between India and Australia, due to 3.20 am departure from India. Hotel gorgeous, fantastic price, every comfort in the room, including great pillows and lovely fluffy towels. Friendly staff and lovely (complimentary) airport limousine. Buffet meal looked a little better than it was as the hot meals were lukewarm. However, all great until we were in the limo and the hotel Manager came and knocked on the window to tell us we had taken a face washer!!!! Which we hadn't, but it was in the shower on a shelf. Very awkward final moment for 2 middle aged, boringly honest people over a ?$1 washer.

I stayed here on a stopover and was very impressed by the hotel. Clean and friendly staff and all the amenities. Could nit figure out how to arrange for airport pickup- my emails were bounced back but the cab was about 65 yuan. Free transport from the hotel to the airport was easy and I think runs hourly. I would definitely stay here again on a layover but sadly the hotel is not too convenient to the sights of Shanghai city nor near the train.

Logistics:
I booked a night at this hotel as I chose it because it was close to Pudong airport. I was hoping it would be closer (FYI - from airport to hotel: 20 min with no traffic, 90 RMB)

Building:
Once I got there, the facility looked quite impressive for the price I paid. Very tall ceilings with fancy light bulb cover fixtures. The room looked very nice as well - almost glamorous.

However, when you start noticing the details, you realize the hotel is just trying to be pretentious. Details in the quality are no reflective of the initial impression you get. For example, tv control remote was a little dirty, sticky (yuck), and the battery cover was falling off. The wooden wall feels a little cheap, and has some scratch marks.

Staff:
They speak English, good enough to communicate. Friendly - no complaints.

Food:
I had their breakfast buffet. Overall experience with food was ok. They had good variety of selection. But some of their food wasn't that fresh. One of their bread was tough to chew.

Conclusion: At first I was excited to try a non-western hotel chain that would add the geographical convenience of being close to the terminal while having new experiences. At the end I didn't care about this hotel, even though it was generally fine. Next time I'll book a hotel closer to the airport and perhaps a western hotel as you'll know what you'll get. With a local hotel, this is not always the case.

I stayed there only one night on my way back to HK. The hotel is close to Pudong airport and they have a shuttle to the airport.
Staff is friendly and speaks very good English. The room service menu, which is the same as the Cafe menu could do with a serious update. That was rather disappointing.

This hotel is located just 15 minutes away from the airport. A shuttle is offered to take you from and back to the airport. The unfriendly neighborhood that surrounds it is certainly not preparing you for the well renovated building which happens to be a totally non smoking facility (yes you've heard correct, this happens in China where people still smoke in the elevators). The 4 star hotel has a friendly lobby lounge - bar and at the same level you can visit the restaurant for an a la cart dinner. The U.S fillet is certainly a must to try, maybe combined with a bottle of the German white wine they have in their list. The room is really clean and the reading light would probably worth to steal as it stands on the bed as a piece of exquisite modern art. You can forget it though because it is grounded on the drawer ( probably others thought about it before we did). Two more innovative ideas : the " please wait a minute" button by your side in the WC ( it really helps when the maid knocks your door and you're using the bathroom). Also , the " atomization glass" button which either makes you obvious or hides you through the window that separates the bathroom from the bedroom. So, in case you wanna watch your small children while they are taking a bath, you deactivate it and so on... Cool hah? Before getting in the shuttle bus back to the airport , make sure your luggage is IN it. To help those who are willing to make an overseas trip to Shanghai , choose between the star alliance airways and not between those of the sky team , as the former departs from terminal 2 and the latter from terminal 1. The business class lounge of Lufthansa for example is open around and much more pleasant than the one of air France which is absolutely unacceptable as a closed around set up with shut downed windows and uncomfortable chairs, fast food looking wraps on the cold sandwiches and heavily humid atmosphere. If you're paying business class that's not what you should get. Can't really forget , 3 months ago, leaving from Shenyang airport for Frankfurt: every single shop was closed by eight o'clock (pm), and lights were down in such a way we thought there was a strike. Until a little before midnight , we checked in LH's counters, looking forward to get to the business lounge to grab something to eat. Well, guess what: the doors of the lounge were locked and a security officer told us that "the staff was at home sleeping..." "No way Hosé", I said. Fifteen minutes later, two young ladies wearing air-hostess ' uniform (can't remember which company's) opened the lounge for us ( and for other 30 passengers). There was not really fresh meal to eat expect for some rice that didn't really look good on first sight ( neither on second...). Some coffee and a few crunchy chocolates did the trick. So, there's always worse than you can think of ... If you have to get a connect flight at CDG airport , make sure you get enough time as the shuttles you get on to change terminals come by every 15-20 minutes and the lines are endless...
