A wonderful full five star luxury hotel located in the centre of historical Bund area. Review based on a two night stay in March’11 (background of spending 80+ nights per year in different hotels around the globe)
Located right in the middle of the beautiful Bund area, immediately across the river from the tallest towers in Shanghai. Walking on the river boulevard watching Bund on one side and Pudong on the other side while all kinds of ships flow by you is a great experience, during day and especially at the night time.
Some bars & restaurants in immediate neighborhood, such as nice House of Blues & Jazz. Some high-end shops are nearby with Nanjing Street offering a bit more normal stores starting maybe 500m away.
I’ve seen a fair number of 5 star hotel rooms around the world, very rarely any of them caused that “WOW” feeling. This one certainly did! Décor was in my opinion just right, traditional without being too old fashioned yet included very modern technology such as touch-screen operated lights & curtains. It was very clear that the room had been carefully constructed, you could say every single detail of the room was perfect. Wonderful view from 16th floor towards the skyscrapers of Pudong across the Huang Pu river.
Only (minor) negative point I can think of was the rather strange automatic electrical toilet seat. This is IMHO one of those very clear “if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it” items: what’s wrong with a normal regular toilet seat..? Otherwise the bathroom was large with separate booths for toilet seat as well as for shower with a separate bath.
Complimentary offerings included many bottles of water, some candies & cookies and a large bowl of fruits. Other equipment included a large LCD TV (including a Blue-ray player) and a safe.
Breakfast was very good, wide variety with good quality of both hot and cold selection, including a cook to make you your own omelet/whatever.
There’s no Executive Lounge in this hotel. Gym/pool section was still somewhat under construction so cannot comment that. Historical Long Bar was certainly worth the visit, wonderfully restored environment straight from the golden age of Shanghai.
Level of service was excellent, everybody was eager to please. And everyone spoke either good or very good English. Didn’t notice any kind of “this place is only for posh millionaires in tuxedos” feeling, so even a regular guy like myself felt welcome.
Would I return there?
Yes, absolutely. An extremely fine hotel located in a middle of fine historical location! Somewhat expensive but worth the money
