“An island of calm in Shanghai. And chocolate.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013 via mobile

Tramping the streets and the shops in Shanghai is hard work. If you're in the area and need a break then come in here. Why? It's calm, it's stylish and it has chocolate. They sell chocolates, drinking chocolate, they even sell some light 'normal food'. But you really want a cup of coffee and one of their range of chocolate cakes before you face the crowds again. Admit it.

“fantastic cake, great ambiance, nice staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

I went there this morning with my baby. Ordered a Death by Chocolate and a Cafe au Lait, both were delicious and the cake was definitely a Western flavor which I liked. The size was decent, every bite was rich and chocolatey with pieces of crunchies inside which added a nice texture.

The place was relaxing in the morning (well it was 1130am) and the staff were extremely accommodating, when my baby screeched I wanted to leave immediately- they were the one who said no worries there were not many customers.

I got a piece of Chocolate Caramel Cake for take-away and can't wait to try it tonight with my hubby! Well done HoF I will definitely come again.

“Great European−style fancy cafe in the middle of sylish Shanghai”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 15, 2013

Sinan road is the gate between downtown Shanghai and the narrow streets and new developments of old Shanghai. A stroke through this road will lead you to some shopping havens and a stylish open market. So, a visit to hoF is more than natural, for great coffee and probably the best choclate cake in this side of the globe. Local fashion icons and models are daily visitors so keep your eyes open...

“Chocolate-lovers, look no further!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2012

In short: DEATH BY CHOCOLATE (also the name of one of their cakes).
In long: probs my favorite chocolate joint, in Shanghai. What is the best time to go? It doesnt matter man, it's always packed, so expect a little wait. And if you go with large amount of people, you'll wait even longer.
I usually go there for dessert after a meal. Quite an exhaustive menu, obviously everyting is chocolate-base, but they try to offer different range. Death by Chocolate is, I think, one of their signature cakes; the name says it all. Another one has orange frosting on the top, one of my favorites. People who aren't chocolate fans, but are nice enough to hang out with friends who do, hoF also serves cheese cakes, home made yoghurt, pana cotta... If you don't like any of these, your loss. Some might say the portions are small; I say, the chocolate is so rich that you don't need that big of a slice to get stuffed. A few times, I ordered entire cakes for birthdays and parties, it always makes a good I impression when I bring stuff from hoF to my friends.
In the afternoon, probs less busy, my friends and I like to hang out for afternoon tea (yes, I'm 29 and I take afternoon teas; so what. Sue me). Take one or two pieces of truffle to go with our beverage. In the winter, must try the hot chocolateS (different kinds and amount of cocoa).
They also serve food during lunch time, but nothing too fancy about it.
Price wise, it might be a little pricey (I didn't say over price), but hey, you get what you pay for.
Btw, it's closed on Mondays.

“Overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2012

Heard alot about Hof from people around town,so we decided to give it a try. The death by chocolate cake was really small and pricy,it didn't taste as good either. The dessert cost around 40-50rmb per slice,a tiny one.The other one with orange sauce tasted pretty good, but i guess i was disappointed with their coffee Mocha,i really think they need to improve their coffee skills!couldn't taste the beans and thought those sachet coffees tasted better!Overall, its a try for everyone, but come sit and enjoy the atmosphere, cus you won't be coming back the next time.
