I was looking for a reasonably priced serviced apartment near xintiandi, I found Ascott fit the bill perfectly. I was staying for a week during national holiday (oct 1-7), so the price might have been higher. I paid roughly around 1000RMB+ and got a 1 bedroom premier.
Location: i think it was in a great location, about a block from the center of xintiandi. If you want closer, you can go to a hotel like Langham or Xintiandi 88 or Andaz...all of these places are over $250/night. These are of course a different class of hotels....but we are talking about serviced apartments. Overall, its a great location in terms of xintiandi and also its on Huaihai road which has a lot of shopping and eating options.
General facility: Its not a hotel, so you wont get the abundance of service people attending to your every need...but it is very attentive but with less staff around. It does'nt have that 4-5 star buffet, or a elegant coffee shop in the lobby where you can have afternoon tea. The lobby is just the right size to check in and out, and has a waiting area with a coffee/refreshment table. Its very business oriented and not meant for hanging around. I checked out the pool. It looked adequate, its a bit smaller than the pictures, but it is big enough. the gym is also not bad. It wont win any architectural digest awards, but its good enough. No infinity pools here or jacuzi overlooking the bund.... they have a business center as well...again, adequate. there were a few meeting rooms as well. The bar and italian restaurant on the 7th floor was very sparse when we visited on a friday night. Had a few residents hanging out but looks like its not the buzzing bar of the area. its hard to be when you're next to xintiandi.
ROOM: probalby the best part...it was big...a lot bigger than the Fraser residence i was in a week ago. But its also more expensive than the fraser. but it hink its worth the extra money. The kitchen was big, had really nice electrolux appliances, i think there was about 3-4 themostats in the room that controlled different ACs. The washing machine was located far from the bedroom so it wasnt noisy. The living room area was big as well and didnt feel crammed. My only 2 complains 1) is the bed. I requested a king size bed..and we got 2 fullsize that was butted up together to make a king. This is fine, but if you are the type who likes sleeping in the center...you will feel the space between the beds. second complain is...i booked this place for 2 people...and they only gave us free breakfast for 1 person. which was annoying coz' i had to pay and extra 100rmb if i wanted my wife to eat. Ultimately, we just skipped the breakfast all together.
They have a safe in the closet. bathroom amenities is also adequate. I dont think they provided body lotion. The shampoo and conditioner and shower gel was from l'occitane. They provided toothbrush as well. They also gave 2 bottle water daily.
i didnt find a coffeemaker though...instant coffee. booooo.....would be nice to have a nespresso here.
wifi was fine..it was a bit slow, and somehow had some firewall that prevented me from downloading some magazines in my ipad at zinio. They also had wired connection.
Overall...its hard to complain about this place....great location is hard to beat...and the space you get is big. We used the washing machine a lot so that in itself was worth it since we didnt have to pack too many clothes...or pay laundry bills. The fridge was great too since we can buy food from outside and eat in...or take home food and dont have to squeeze it into a small minibar fridge you;d get in regular hotels.
I will definitely stay here again.
