“Sparkling grand hotel, but...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

This is a brand new hotel in the heart of Shanghai's financial district. The atmosphere is very grand right after you enter the lobby. I stay at junior suite room and the size is incredible. There is a living room + guest bathroom; then a separate bedroom with walk-in closet and spacious bathroom (with standing bathtub + separate shower area)

Since my room is located on 51th floor, the view is quite amazing (unfortunately Shanghai was grey, cloudy and raining during my stay there).

No doubt that this is a very impressive hotel with Ritz-carlton standard service

Now, the "But" is:
I guess it all comes down to preference. To me, the hotel seems rather impersonal and cold; probably because it feels so brand new, immaculate and flawless. The interior design is too modern and - somehow -- too cold for me. To me it lacks the charm and the character and the homey feeling.

Still, a very very good hotel

Stayed here while visiting Shanghai. . . First class place! The buffet breakfast had a large selection of food and was fantastic, helpful staff, room was large, enjoyed swimming in the pool. Close to stores for shopping.

Beyond doubt the best hotel I have stayed in. A superb view (take a river view room), sumptuous accommodation, attentive service, great food in all the restaurants, the best rooftop bar you can imagine on the 57th floor - the superlatives continue. I particularly liked the way - if you were sitting on your own waiting for someone - staff would often come up and start talking. It's great for Pudong. It's not exactly convenient for a stroll along the Bund, nor for the French Concession. But if the location is not important, you will not regret the stay. A dream.

Room Tip: River room has the best views.

This Ritz-Carlton is newer than the other one in Shanghai. The location is great, next to the ifc and several shopping centers. Spa there was great. The Flair is definitely a must go place. Breakfast here is good, but don't have lunch or dinner at hotel. There are so many great restaurants in the ifc shopping center, such as Simply Thai.

As good as it gets but extremely expensive. Bund view rooms spectacular. Executive club lounge is great. Location perfect if you want to be in Pudong. I used to stay at Shangri-La but moved here last trip and came back again. If you don't mind the price you will be very satisfied.
Only negative was poor wireless Internet system. Never was able to get iPad connected in two days even with help of their IT support. Time for them to get someone other than Ibahn for their wireless. Club level person told me this is ongoing problem with many guests. If wireless critical to you go to Hyatt in Jin Mao or Shangri-La. I have stayed at both and would not hesitate to recommend.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012

Have been staying in the hotel for three nights last week (October 2012). Having read the other day that more than half of the hotel reviews are fakes, I emphasize that all of my reviews are personal live experience !

The Ritz Carlton has a very inventive appearance, starting from the fancy shoeshine boys at the entrance to the reception being in the 52nd floor. In fact it is necessary to always go to the 52nd floor first and then down to the 12 floors of guest rooms below. Service level, perfection in every detail and friendliness of staff were immaculate. The rooms are spacious (> 40 sqm) and well equipped and have a spectacular view. I did not even have Bund/river view in my room, but was impressed nevertheless. The bathrooms are open, so even sitting on the toilet you can look out of the huge full wall windows. In my room there also was a stand alone bathtub with the same view. Bed was good with a wide selection of pillows, smell fresh and cleanliness without any fault. The breakfast buffet was expensive, but with a wide variety of choices and good quality (e.g. fresh pressed juices). I briefly tried the gym and the pool, also nice, albeit at night the pool surroundings seemed a bit too dark to me. Unfortunately I have not been to the 57th floor roof terrace, but telling from the pictures on the hotel homepage it must be breathtaking.

The only tiny flaw was that the strength of the WiFi signal in the room, which was quite weak and dropped out from time to time.

All in all I cannot see much room for improvement, even in a boom city like Shanghai.

Service: staff tried to be very helpful. When they were not able to help (concierge was not the most informed), they had a great attitude. The front desk for check-in were very strong.

Room: Wow,... impressive!!! With an unrivalled view of the Huangpu River and all interior appointments sparing no expense, this hotel is easily one of the best urban-set hotels in the world!

F&B: Had lunch at Scena and although solid, did not meet the top notch setting of a hotel of this calibre. Wine list was surprisingly weak as well. However, the view made up for anything lacking.

Location & Property: Located in Pudong's Lujiazui's financial district, it is connected to IFC. You will find ultra-high end shopping and dining at IFC as well as some more modest eateries as well. An attraction for foodies will certainly be City Super located below ground floor in IFC.

Must mention the tranquil pool at the RC Pudong. My wife and I had this pool to ourselves a few days and it was laugh-out-loud gorgeous. Whatever pictures you see online,... believe them!

Other: I believe prices have gone up noticeably in the past few years. However, if you are looking for a most memorable moment or celebrating something special,... look no further. Stay a night at the Ritz Carleton Pudong!!!

Room Tip: Make sure you have a room with a view of the Huangpu River! It is really quite a view and well wort...
