“Nice stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2012

We stayed here as part of a tour group and had a very nice stay, even while the hotel was clearly running on a skeleton staff. The rooms and interior of the hotel are great and the staff were very friendly, even though the majority of them didn't speak very good English, if at all.
Room service was reasonably fast and very good, and the breakfast buffet had a nice variety and were very good.
Location wise, as as been mentioned elsewhere, not the best, but all in all a very nice hotel and one that I would happily recommend.

Location of this hotel is for sure not the best point of this hotel. But the city is working on it. Very soon there will be additional metro line just couple of meters next to this hotel. When it comes to the rest, everything was OK. Spacious rooms, tasty food, clean. People working in the reception desk are not very familiar with English but are communicative. In general OK.

The rooms are lovely and spacious. The breakfast buffet is good with a mix of Asian and Western stuff. On our last evening, the bar had closed when we got back to the hotel, but that wasn't a problem, since they opened up especially for us ( a group of four), so we really couldn't complain about the service. The location is poor, but the hotel itself makes up for that. The rooms have internet access, but the quality of the connection varied, some days it was difficult to log on.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2011 via mobile

Staying here for the last 3 nights of our China tour.
This is by far the best hotel we have stayed in on our trip, but the location is poor. Taxis are cheap thankfully & the long awaited metro station is STILL under construction, making the journey here seem like you are entering a building site!
The staff are friendly & helpful, calling taxis & making sure the driver knows where you want to go.
Have breakfast well before 9.30 , as we found by 9am, the tables had been cleared & the chef had to be called back to cook us some eggs. Most of the breakfast buffet items were gone & not replaced & we had to find our own cutlery & coffee as staff were not interested in serving us, a contrast to our early breakfast the day before.
Our double room was spacious & comfortable, with a great bathroom with bath & separate shower. However, our children were given twin beds in a smaller corner room down the corridor, the concept that we would like them next to us seemed a strange request that could not be arranged-despite our tour company 'guaranteeing' side by side rooms (we had the same issue in Beijing too)
Finally, WiFi that works! The first time in our 5 week trip that has had WiFi in our rooms (with some sites blocked, such as Facebook.)

The Paradise Hotel in Shanghai was our base for three nights in September 2010 while travelling around China. It was both the best and the worst of the hotels we stayed in for the following reasons.

Best: It was definitely the plushest of our Chinese hotels and we somehow got upgraded to a suite without even asking. Lovely comfy, soft beds, unlike everywhere else we stayed, sofa, brand new bathroom and even a view to the skyscrapers of Pudong….far away….

because the Paradise Hotel was the worst because of the location. The hotel is quite far out of the main part of the city. We didn’t even try to walk to the closest subway station as even that appeared to be far (and we don’t mind a bit of a walk). To be fair, when we stayed, there was a new subway station being built right outside the hotel and so this might be ready by now which would make the location less of an issue. However, if you like to be in the centre of things, this hotel is not for you. We used taxis and a driver to get to the main sights and back again in the evenings for dinner etc. We didn’t eat at the hotel but we did have a pleasant meal at a restaurant over the road and behind the roadworks.

Staff were helpful in calling taxis and telling drivers where we wanted to go. Breakfast was extensive and with a huge selection so we were able to sample Chinese breakfast ingredients and have a filling meal before the day ahead.

We also used the spa on one occasion as we both wanted massages but I think we were the victims of a breakdown in communication. I guess we had envisaged side by side massages to soothing music in a pleasant environment. Instead, we got a girl, who I’m still not sure was actually a masseuse – I have my suspicions she was just holding the fort during a quiet period – with a deep tissue, no oil massage, one at a time. The massage itself was good but not relaxing – she was tiny but very, very forceful! And the fact her mobile kept ringing didn’t make for a soothing experience but hey, holidays are made for experimenting! Next time, I think I’d try to make sure I booked it with reception ahead of time!

This was the last and the best hotel of our OnTheGo tour of China.

The hotel was great, one of the nicest I have stayed in.
The room was large and luxurious, with an amazing bathroom, with both a bath and a shower.

However........ the only real problem with the hotel, is its location, it is a long way out of the centre of Shanghai, in the suburbs.
A taxi from the centre / touristy parts of Shanghai costs 40 - 50 Yuan, which is high compared to everywhere else we visited when a ride back to the hotel would cost less than 10 Yuan.
On our 2nd night, we used the Metro to get home, and it was alot further to the hotel than we expected - 50 minute walk from Dalian Metro Station. Yes there are Metro stops closer to the hotel, but we selected this one, as it only looked slightly further out, and was very easy to navigate from it back to the hotel.
