The lobby was modern and well mantained, the room is up to date with todays generation as each room was fitted with an ipod docking alarm clock. The room was well maintained which truly lives up to the five star standard. I'd would certainly choose this hotel if you like modern and well maintained hotel.

Room Tip: Always choose rooms facing west and also have a great water front views and/or city views on the 22n...

I stayed here with my sister in October for a girls' weekend. What a phenomenal hotel.
Location: right across the street from Nanjing Road, the walking street. Located maybe about the middle of Nanjing Road as it runs from one end to the other. Easy walk to the Bund from the hotel.

Service: Bellmen all spoke fantastic english. Enough to help us with directions, give us restaurant recommendations, etc. Wireless internet is complimentary but you have to put a deposit down for the service (I think it was about the equivalent of $20 USD). Because we booked through a third party travel vendor we had to pay cash for the deposit. Of course, we forgot to pick it back up when we checked out but were able to have a friend pick it up for us later.

Rooms: Unbelievable. I mean, I've stayed in some nice hotels and would put this one up against any of them. Some people have commented that the rooms seem dated but that wasn't our impression at all. We had a room with two double beds, which were comfortable to American standards. They also offered a pillow menu, which we did not take advantage of. The bathroom was HUGE, all marble, with a separate tub, shower and water closet, and included all sorts of little amenities.

I would absolutely stay here again, either for another girls' weekend or with my family (two young boys).

Room Tip: Don't forget to pick up your wireless internet deposit when you leave!

Stayed four days right before thanksgiving and enjoyed it. We had booked a business suite, which wasn't available when we checked in at 11am, so they gave us a huge executive suite at not charge, but without the executive perks. Could easily sleep four, but only one bathroom inside the master bedroom. Location great - right next to east east nanjing road metro junction of 2 and 10 train. Also you can take the 2 train from PVG airport to that stop, go out the number 4 exit and you're a block and a half away from the hotel. You're half a block from the nanjing road pedestrian mall and a park where wu shu, tai chi, fan troupes etc., congregate in the morning. The concierge spoke great english. There's convenience stores on street in back of hotel where you can buy water and tsing tao beers (quart size - 50 cents). The gym opens late - 630, but has at least 8 cardio machines and was always empty - some free weights and machines. Great pool Just one stop away from pudong - oriental pearl tower, and yuyuen garden old town. 5-10 minute walk from peoples square. They let us stay 2 hours late at no charge, due to a later flight. Great deal for the money.

This is accurately a 4.5* hotel. It is not a 5* because the rooms are slightly worn down (not significantly). The hotel has very few king-size rooms on non-smoking floors and tried to up-sell me to an executive room for $40 more a night. The internet was very slow.

That being said, the hotel rooms are large, it is a good location, service was good - including turn down service. The gym was adequate also, although could have used more modern equipment.

Tips: The hotel is next door to another hotel called the "Central Hotel." This can be very confusing. Make sure you go to the "Grand Central" which is the darker building.

Pros: Great location - next to shopping street, 1 min from subway, 10 min from bund, good service, large rooms

Cons: Slightly worn down rooms, internet was slow, very few king size bed rooms on non-smoking floor

When we arrived at the hotel the front desk was not able to confirm our reservation. This despite both a passport and my reservation number from hotels.com. The service person at the desk retried a number of time, including calling hotels.com, without success. OK the problem could have been either with the hotel or at hotels.com. What lost the hotel brownie points was when the front desk service person asked to keep my reservation details so that they could work on the problem and asked me to take a seat in the lounge while she sorted things out. More than forty minutes later …nothing. When I returned to the desk…she was gone and her coworkers were not even certain who I had been dealing with (my bad for not getting her name…but). Fortunately I explained what had occurred to a new front desk person and magically my reservation appeared. Never clear as to what happened.

The room was wonderful and the bed was, frankly, the most comfortable one we slept in while in China. The deluxe room had a large bathroom with both a nice shower, bath and separate WC.

The bad taste around our initial delay was completely removed when we ran into a problem due to an unexpected flight cancelation. The concierge and the front desk were extremely helpful in terms of sorting out what the airline had done and arranging to extend our stay, in the same room, for another day. This was done relatively painlessly and quick and we were very pleased with the hotel (not so much with the airline).

The location is great and the hotel is close to the Bund, People's square and The pedestrian area of the Nanjing road. Recommended

This is a wonderful hotel. It may not compare to the five stars of the Peace or Waldorf, but very nice. Secure, staff was excellent, breakfast was wonderful. Rooms are very nice with all the amentities needed.

We stayed here on the advice of the travel agent that we used in China. Hotel has an excellent location in the center. I would have preferred to stay in the French Concession which is a better location for restaurants and shopping. That being said we were not sorry that we stayed here. This is truly a 5 star hotel for 4 star prices. It is 1 block off Nanjing Road across the street from the Sofitel. The deluxe rooms are huge as are the marbe bathrooms. In the center of bustling Shanghai this is an oasis of tranqulitly. The pool is all marble and is large enough to do laps and is never busy. One of the nicest hotel pools that I have ever used. Service is excellent. Breakfast buffet is delicious and very pelntiful and varried. The dinner food however is just OK. I would definitely stay here again. Is walking distance to Bund and is 10 minutes by cab to French Concession
