“Retro classic with all the modern comforts-Stay here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2010

The Room:
Stayed in a Deluxe Room with a fantastic albeit partial view of the Bund. The facilities in the room are top-notch with all the modern comforts like wireless/wired internet, flat screen tv with port/jocks for your digital camera, sound system and even Internet radio which allows you to listen radio broadcasts from all over the world. I also used the VOIP phone (which was complimentary) to place overseas calls. The King size bed was one of the most comfortable beds we have ever slept on. There is a large size bathroom with two wash basins and a large dressing room in royal blue color. The in-room safe was of good size and had some lights inside.
The overall design oozes luxury and we found this hotel better than the Peninsula in Bangkok and Manila in terms of room design and facilities.
The classic retro design was of good taste and the room is one of the best we have ever stayed in (up there together with the Four Seasons Hong Kong and Park Hyatt Shanghai).

Food/Breakfast:
We availed of the Celebration package which included breakfast.
Breakfast was served in the lobby and this was a very elegant place. However, being used to the variety served in hotels like the Shangrila or the Peninsula in Bangkok, we found the breakfast to be lacking in variety. Having said that, food quality was very good. Service was also quick and pleasant as there were a lot of staff on hand to serve the guests. We were also served teas (which I think was very good indeed) and freshly squeezed fruit juice.

Location:
The hotel is in a faultless location along the Bund. Across the street, you have to jostle with a lot of tourists (mostly Chinese) to get a good view of the Pudong skyline. It is crowded but here you can feel the upbeat energy of Shanghai. In this location, you are just minutes away from the end of the Nanjing shopping road and the Sightseeing tunnel to Pudong. The Yuyuan gardens are about less than a 10 minute taxi ride.

Facilities:
The overall atmosphere inside the hotel is of grandeur and luxury and this is maybe one of the most luxurious hotels in Shanghai right now. The lobby, public areas and shopping arcade are fantastic. We also used the swimming pool (length of 25 meters and 1.2 m deep) and this may be is the most luxurious hotel pool we have ever used.
There is a small jacuzzi beside the swimming pool where you can rest after doing your laps.

Overall:
Although we had some communication problems with the staff when we were checking in, most of the staff spoke good English. The Peninsula limousine that fetched us from the airport (Mercedes Benz S) and the other limousine (BMW 7 series) that took us to our next hotel were both superb.
Overall, this ranks as one of our favorite hotels and narrowly beats the Park Hyatt Shanghai (I will be writing the review on this hotel, too) as our hotel of choice in Shanghai.

Have stayed in several Peninsulas around the world. This one exceeded expectations. High quality rooms, unbelievable views from the hotel bar, good gym, great locations, etc. Concierge really made the stay great for an english speaking traveler - handled all activties/meals smoothly and communicated with me via cell email so that I could adapt my plans throughout the day. Very well done.

Management staff at the Peninsular shanghai would do well to get lessons in public relations and in giving people the rooms for which they pay. It is obvious that the satisfaction of paying guests is not a priority with management. Throughout the hotel there was not a welcoming atmosphere, but an attitude of arrogance and haughtiness. However housekeeping staff etc. could not do enough for us.
Matters came to a head when whilst trying to rest one afternoon and also during the night so -called maintenance was being done!!! Loud banging noises continued through till 1 o'clock in the morning. After contacting the main desk we were merely told that maintenance was being done in the room above us and nothing could be done about it!!!
How can a five star hotel book rooms to guests when this type of activity is being performed?????
In our opinion the hotel did not live up to it's reputation .

Rooms are elegant with a very modern touch. Everything in the room can be controled from your desk or bed by pushing a button. Location right on the Bund makes for a perfect starting point for sightseeing and nice romantic walks at night.
Staff is very freindly and they speak english better than any other hotel we stayed at in China. Great buffet breakfast was included with room. Only stayeded 2 nights but wish we could have stayed more.

Staying at the Peninsula Hotel is a decadent treat to say the least. I have nothing but praise for the hotel, and would recommend it to all travelers who have cash to burn – it’s not cheap. What a great location, just across the street from the Bund and the river with tremendous views of Pudong – magical at night. The hotel is within walking distance of the entire Bund and its many attractions, as well as the Nanjing Road shopping area. The Bund is great for walking or an early morning run.

While the lobby is a bit low key, the rest of the hotel is pure luxury. My room was excellent – large walk-in wardrobe, king size bed, entertainment center, and a bathroom finished in marble. Everything in the room is controlled electronically from control pads placed strategically around the rooms. The room was of course spotlessly clean and well-maintained, with quality furnishings and décor, very tastefully done. The entire front wall was a window overlooking the Bund and the river and the night time views (and daytime views for that matter) were fantastic!

The service is great. I found all the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful, from reception right down to the maids – and everyone speaks English. The breakfast buffet was awesome with a great variety of fruit and western specialties, like buttermilk pancakes with strawberries and whipped cream.

I made use of the gym and I was very impressed. There are around 10 high-quality Life Fitness cardio machines, all with personal TV screens and a full variety of brand new Life Fitness weight machines. They were a bit sparse on the free weights but they did thankfully have a complete set of dumbbells and benches. Excellent gym overall.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to enjoy a decadent splurge. I think my room was in the US$500/night range so it doesn’t come cheap and you’d have to debate the value of it.

We have just returned from Shanghai having spent 4 luxurious nights at the Peninsula Shanghai. Amidst the frenetic heat of the city it was an air conditioned urban oasis - a destination in itself. Centrally located and within walking distance of the train station, major shopping spots and the Bund sightseeing tunnel (a kitsch but convenient transport option if you want to get to the IFC shopping mall, Brand Super Mall and tourist destinations on the opposite bank of the river.), the Peninsula was perfectly positioned. Taxis are very very very cheap by any world standards, so anything out of the way, such as expo, is easily accessible too.
The level of luxury and service offered is what you would expect from a Peninsula. Concierge, waiters, bell desk, gym/ spa attendants, front desk were all extremely helpful and at that higher level of courteous that one expects from the best hotels. Everything was designed to offer the best luxury experience.
Highlights - Lovely airy rooms with beautifully soft beds and linens. Individually climate controlled rooms are vital in Shanghai where the temperature was 44 C on our first day. Gorgeous large pool and gym. We had breakfast at the pool side one morning after a work out and swim which was divine.
Easy to book car transport from the airport to the hotel and return.
Great restaurants - went to both and both were stunning.
High tea in the lobby was great and although we were worried that they don't take bookings, it was not a problem. There were more cakes on the high tea stand than I could physically eat.
Free International phone calls and very fast free Wifi were excellent.
Overall we had an excellent experience. This hotel has joined our top ten favourite hotels of the world (Peninsula Hong Kong, George V Paris, Mandarin Oriental London, Peninsula New York, Tokyo Miracosta, Tokyo Disneyland hotel, Hong Kong Mandarin Oriental, Crown Towers Melbourne, Hotel De Crillon Paris and now this one)
Now that Disney has announced a new park in Shanghai, we will be back to stay when we experience the new park!

I just checked out yesterday, and I have to say that this has been the most comfortable hotel stay I have ever had. Every member of the staff I encountered during my 6 day stay was courteous and as friendly as they come. I have to specially commend the front desk staff member Jacky, for going out of his way to provide us a list of recommended spots to visit for a taste of local cuisine and experiences. As stated by other reviewers, the concierge was very helpful, providing detailed maps and information for tourist spots we were interested in. I would definitely stay at this hotel again when I visit Shanghai again.
