“Location + service + amenities = one of the best anywhere!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2012

One must pay for their pleasure in this world, but if you accept that proposition, then The Peninsula in Shanghai is simply one of the best. The location is feet off the Bund, a wonderful river front boardwalk that is an iconic part of Shanghai. The hotel borders the old garden for the British consulate, so you may be surrounded by 21 million Shanghainese, but this remains an idyll of peace. The service is earnest and attentive. The rooms are modern and well designed, with clever use of technology that doesn't require a user manual or a 15 year old to translate. I didn't have a dinner on property but room service for breakfast was on the spot in terms of time and quality. The fitness center is on the third floor overlooking the garden, and has all of the bells and whistles,
. There is alot to love here, so if you are looking for an island of luxury and comfort in the heart of one of the worlds most energized and exciting cities, it is going to be tough to top The Peninsula!

I have stayed at a lot of nice hotels, but have never have the consistent level of service as this property. Every need anticipated for a business traveller, and a new traveller to China. Service was outstanding, location great, views great. Breakfast is very good as well as room service, did not eat at any of the other spots. I wish I had time to take advantage of the pool, it is beautiful! Finally, the laundry service had me completely spoiled, if I go back to Shanghai, no question where I will stay.

Room Tip: Higher floors have a great view of the Bund

Located right on the bund, with amazing views across to pudong, the Peninsula Shanghai ticks all the boxes. From the rolls Royce airport pickup, to the smooth in room check in, the service was faultless. Our room had a great vies of all the action on the bund, but was still really quiet. The room was spacious and luxurious, complete with nespresso machine, and fresh fruit replenished each day. Very comfy bed, beautiful linen, great bathroom.
Sir elly's bar is a great place for a drink with awesome cocktails and a beautiful view of the river and illuminated boats. We also had our best meal in shanghai at yi long court. The pool was also amazing, and has an outside area. The spa was relaxing and serene, with great treatments. Breakfast buffet small, but high quality.
Each time we returned gratefully from the hot, crowded city, we were welcomed back warmly by the attentive staff at the door and out front.
Would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: River view definitely worth it, even on lower floors

The Peninsula Shanghai and the surrounding area:
On my second visit to Shanghai in November 2011 I decided to pamper myself with a three night stay at the Peninsula Shanghai which opened its doors late 2009. After memorable stays in the Peninsula Hotels of Hong Kong and Bangkok my expectations were sky-high. The Peninsula is situated at the north end of the Bund promenade bordering the gardens of the British Consulate. From the outside the building looks insignificant but inside it exudes class and luxury with tons of marble in different colours, tasteful furnishings, sparkling chandeliers and smiling bellboys in white uniforms. In the very elegant lobby you can enjoy high tea with classical music in the background. State-of-the-art health club with view of the verdant garden and a lavish indoor-pool bathed in light through the skylight above. The situation of the hotel is more convenient for business travelers because of its proximity to Pudong. As a tourist exploring the city I preferred the location of the Royal Meridien Hotel at People´s Square, where I have stayed several weeks before. But it is wonderful to have the Bund promenade at your doorstep!

The Service
I had booked a package and was met at the airport by a driver of the hotel. My flight from Melbourne via Singapore arrived around 7 in the morning – my luggage unfortunately not… I told the driver about my problems concerning the missed luggage and he gave me support with the papers at the airport. At the hotel an early check-in was no problem and the concierge promised to deal with the airline and the airport. Many phone calls later my bag arrived at my room. Thanks again for the help! Service during my whole stay was perfect – attentive, courteous, unobtrusive – whether the concierge, the maid, the bellboys or the staff in the restaurants. Problems with the aircondition in my room were immediately solved. Because of my missed luggage an “emergency kit” was waiting in my room, wrapped like a present with T-Shirt, socks, brief, shaving kit and more.

The Room
I stayed in a very spacious (about 600 square feet) Deluxe River View Room (1129), unbelievable stylish with the newest room technology discretely hidden behind black lacquer fittings (46-inch plasma TV, Nespresso coffee/tea machine, fax, DVD player, iPod docking station). Local and international calls via internet phone were complimentary. The views of the Huangpu River and the skyline of Pudong were stunning and the walk-in closet and large marble bathroom were bigger than most hotel rooms. Mood lighting in bedroom and bathroom made me feel homey and comfortable. In the bathroom the rainforest shower and the toilet were situated in separate cubicles. The huge tub filled in seconds and to watch TV while soaking was a pleasure. My only complaint: Please return from the Davi products to the fabulous Molton Brown amenities of the past.

The Food
The breakfast was served in the elegant lobby, very comprehensive and the service was organized and friendly. Lunch at the Chinese Restaurant Yi Long Court and dinner and cocktails at Sir Elly´s Restaurant were unforgettable, partly because of high quality and wonderful views, partly because of the sky-high prices. Great Cesar salad and Panna Cotta with kumquats and grapefruit sorbet delivered through room-service – impeccable.

All in all
It was a pleasure to stay again at a Peninsula Hotel. The mixture of perfect service, attention to details, the newest in-room technology, fabulous rooms with great views, a really stunning pool and a good location make this hotel unforgettable.
All this comes with a hefty price tag but if you want to pamper and to spoil yourself – don´t look further.

Things you have to see and to do
Make a walk in the early evening along the wonderfully restored historic buildings on the Bund promenade, watch the ferries and illuminated ships on the river and the impressive skyline of Pudong. Have a cocktail in the Jasmin Lounge of the renovated Fairmont Peace Hotel and you will get a feeling of Shanghai in the 1930s. Make your visit at Yu Garden in the morning before the tourist busses arrive. Enjoy the atmosphere at the Jade Buddha Temple where the monks are singing if you are lucky (Don´t forget to touch the belly of the big Buddha with your left hand for your luck in the future!). Do not miss the Shanghai Museum at People`s Square, a stunning building with wonderful art and treasures. Next door awaits the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center with exhibitions about the past and the future of Shanghai, impressive scale model of the city. Have a lunch “with a view” in one of the restaurants at the “Three of the Bund” Building (the concierge will help to make a reservation) Cabs are cheap, but have a card with the address written in Chinese with you for the driver. To get back to the airport from the city I used the MAGLEV high-speed train, convenient and fast. But you have to change from the subway, so I can recommend this only to people with not too much luggage. The small Rockbund Museum for art of the 21st century is a little jewel in a renovated Art Deco building and has a terrace on the rooftop with view of the river and the skyscrapers of Pudong. And for a nice souvenir have a look at one of the fancy “Shanghai Tang” boutiques – the room fragrances are great.

About Shanghai and the people
Shanghai is a bustling city with stunning modern architecture, wonderful museums and galleries, a wide variety of great restaurants and fabulous shopping. Because of the EXPO in 2010 public transportation was expanded and improved and the few remaining historic buildings were spruced up. I feel a little sad that because of the building boom in China and especially in Shanghai many of the historic quarters were raised and torned down. Notable exceptions are the Bund and Xintiandi, where many historic buildings have been restored. On one hand this city is very interesting and captivating, on the other hand it is loud, exhausting and demanding. Most people I have met were open-minded and curious. English is not widely spoken, so conversation is mostly limited. Shanghai has a long history as a city of trade and commerce, everyone tries to sell you something. After three days it starts to annoy ignoring all the street vendors trying to sell you bags, watches, shirts, pot, boys, girls…

They charge a fortune but they achieve perfection. The rooms are amazing - get a river view suite, the food, the pool, the gym, the spa and the restaurants - all perfect. Most importantly, the staff does not overlook even the smallest detail and makes each guest feel special. Be prepared to part with your wallet, however, as there are no bargains here, but that is ok...everyone should experience The Peninsula once in their lives to see what heaven is like.

Room Tip: get a river view suite

It's overall a very nice business hotel. My colleague and I simply turned the room into a work station and amazingly with free long-distance calls! The in-room facilities were more than we expected: fax, printer and etc. that we didn't even have to use their business centre and can settle eveyrthing in-room. They even had a nail dryer at the walk-in closet fo ladies which was really considerate. The a la carte breakfast was really great that you would not want to miss: egg benedicts, egg white omelette, pan cakes and more. We made use of a corner table at the lobby lounge as our interview/meeting place, the staff were really helpful with the supports we asked for. The lobby at Peninsula is also now the place for the business crowd to meet that you would be bumping into most of your business friends.

The Shanghai version of the Peninsula is ritzier and more glossy than its older "sibling" in Beijing. The hotel's location is superb being right in the action of the Bund and with the beat of the city passing right through the hotel.

The rooms are more than excellent, especially if one if fortunate to have one with a view over the Pudong river, we did. Describing the view, especially at night is near to impossible. Electronics rule in the room with VOIP on offer making calls to any part of the world free of charge. The in-room amenities are above average with expresso machines and mood lighting. TVs and DVDs abound and it is possible to have a bath with all outside influences swiched off. Bed is very comfortable.
The restaurants and bars detract fromthe hotel's potential. The open access foyer/bar/ restaurant is noisy and unwelcoming with passers by screaming down their phones. The breakfast selection is poor by Peninsula standards and crowded onto a relatively small area. The other restaurants require some work, not from the excellent waiting staff, however. Uniforms are tired, drab and appear of poor quality. The outside bar is excellent and offers yet another place to enjoy and soak in the vibrant atmosphere.
