“Pros and Cons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

Let's try to be fair. The service and the rooms are just average. And praise your neighbours are quiet. But the location is definitely a real advantage : 3mn from the Bund, 10mn from metro, the same from Nanjin Road, 15mn from the Old Town. Not easy to find a better place to plan a visit in the day or a drink at Bar Rouge in the evening.
If you want a high service hotel, forget. If you are here to visit Shanghai, go for it !

I had read the mixed reviews of this hotel and was a little apprehensive. I had booked this for our first trip to China,

Positives. Easy to find and easy walk fro Metro. Easy to get to on Metro from the airport (direct line to East Ninjing station ). Very close to the Bund. Staff helpful.

fantastic location near to the Bund and very good prices, particularly if you go through an agency. clean, quiet room with an outside terrace and very helpful staff. i didn't eat there so cannot comment on the food. free wifi and a desk to work at that isn't cluttered up with an oversize tv.

Came and stayed here with my wife and my parents on two separate occasions at the end of March and early April as we travelled away from Shanghai in the middle of our trip. We speak Mandarin so our experience would be different compared to those that only speak English.

Service - Front desk service was adequate and a couple of them were more friendly than the others. The room service lady was very friendly and courteous. The restaurant staff was okay.

Value - We got "upgraded" from 2 garden suite to a family suite which has two rooms and a large living room. This was good for spending family time. The 2nd stay was at 2 separate rooms and the rooms were sufficiently large with basic amenities. The price was reasonable as well.

Sleep quality - Bed was soft (guess some people may not be used to this) and blanket was warm enough for low 10s temperature outside. Unfortunately, there was a church nearby that we could hear the bell ringing very early in the morning. Would require better sound proofing.

Cleanliness - Clean enough but could still smell cigarette smoke despite it being smoke-free. Can't blame the hotel for this though.

Location - Impeccable location as close to the Bund and 7-8 minutes walk to Nanjing pedestrian mall and train station. Lots of restaurants within walkin distance as well.

Rooms - See above. However, the hotel is a bit dated and do require some maintenance.

Internet - Wifi provided but very slow. Much better speed when using the connection line provided rather than the wifi.

Overall - Adequate stay especially considering we weren't in the hotel for much anyway but would need a decent upgrading/maintenance for the future.

The Baron Business hotel is in a very good location right next to the Bund and about 10 minutes walk from the vibrant Nanjing Street. There is a subway station nearby which is conveniently connected to both Shanghai airports and for 7RMB per trip it was very easy to get from Pudong Airport to East Nanjing station and then walk a short distance to the hotel.

The people at the front desk however could only speak limited English but my hotel room seemed good enough especially the bathroom but it was difficult to utilise the WiFi except with the help of a VPN. The central heating system could have been a lot better but the room was spacious and for the equivalent of £32 a night represented very decent value, I'm not convinced however that it should be labelled a 4 star hotel.

I did not utilise any of the other facilities available at the hotel except on my first night I wanted to eat at the restaurant but I was extremely disappointed to find several of the chefs just sitting at a table doing nothing and being told by the lady running the restaurant that there were only 2 dishes available on a menu which was supposed to have 20-30 items available to order.

Overall the hotel is adequate for a short stay in Shanghai and is in a very good location with very reasonable prices but you will want to spend as little time as possible inside the hotel. More could be done to improve the quality of service at the hotel especially the restaurant.

With less than 24 hrs in Shanghai for a stop over I stayed at the Baron Business Hotel due to its location and perceived 4* rating on Booking.com and it price. The hotel was far from 4* - during my travels of Asia all the 2* and 3* hotels I stayed in Cambodia were of a higher standard than the Baron Business Hotel.

The room was old and tired with water stains on the walls and ceiling. The hotel dining area was equally as poor with the whole place needing renovating! It is a shame as the hotel has so much potential being in a fantastic location near the Bund area

The hotel is in a good location nearby the bund, few convenience store around, restaurant infront of hotel and easy access to subway.
The bedroom ( on 5th floor) was spacious, as well as the bathroom, there were bathtub and shower (which it wont stick to the place and kept falling down).
The bed was big,but flat hard bed, which is not comfy at all, decorated cushion cover was torn ( see the review of Laila C).
The staff in the reception didnt seem to pay attention for the guests, it happened when we passed an amount of money to 1 staff to be given to tour agency to buy ticket, but on the next day the shipper has to come 2 times to the hotel and obviously the staff didnt give the money to the shipper ( as we have been informed by email),until we came back and told the staff that we passed the money yesterday and they have to check the whole desk to find the envelope.
Internet was so slow :(
