“Best of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2014

This is by far the best Chinese restaurant of any type in shanghai...as long as you like spice ;)

I wake up in the morning talking about The ribs, spicy beans, and candied bananas from Di Shui Dong.

“Good Spicy and Tasty Food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

This is a very good Chinese restaurant for spicy food with great taste. Don't be scared off by the queue infront of the 2F entrance, it took us about 10 minutes each time to get a table. There're probably more than 50 tables so the turn over rate is pretty quick.

Traditional HuNan dishes are recommedned. Perserved smoke pork is my favorite. Try those dishes cooked in "dry pot" style, much better than "water boiled" ones in my opinion. Be aware, the "water boiled" cooking style is actually with lots of chilli in boiling oil, usually very spicy dishes.

“Best pork ribs in the world!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

Amazing place which we often go to, recently choosing less crowded outpost on Dongping road. Signature cumin ribs, cabbage with bacon, fried string beans with chili and shrimp loaded with garlic and chili are staples and never dissappoint. Cheaper option of Qingdao beer to wash down the burn or affordable Vedett on tap. It's budget friendly and welcoming for big crowd with private rooms. Usually we spend ¥120 per person, and leave really full.

Desserts are great with black sesame sticky rice balls cooked in syrup (traditional Chinese New Year dessert) and caramelized bananas or apples (usually a Northen cuisine staple).

Be careful not to be seated at the very back of labyrinth restaurant since you won't get a lot of attention, and even with booking any day of the week it's packed and you need to wait to be seated for 5-10minutes, but you can't start having a beer already.

“Like spicy and flavourful? This is the place!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 10, 2013

This restaurant consistently serves up some great Hunan food that is spicy but also extremely flavourful. The cumin ribs are legendary and I've never ordered a dish I didn't love. There are three locations and all of them are interesting, comfortable, and clean. If you like Hunan food or at least spicy food, you have to try this! They also have a great selection of imported beers to cool you down while you're chowing down on the food.
