“A nice place, but....”

We stayed at the Royal Tulip for two weeks in July while visiting a nearby production facility of my employer.

Let's start with the area: An artificial sand beach, a nice promenade and a some beach ships can be found nearby. If you like to take a walk after work, the area is perfectly suited for this purpose. Dining and shopping opportunities can be found in what I perceived as downtown Jinshan, approx. 15-20 walking distance or a short taxi ride away. The front desk is more than happy to arrange transportation for you, but remember to take a calling card with you since none of the drivers speaks English (and all of them drove like the proverbial bay or of hell).
Jinshan is located at the south border of the Shanghai city area and it takes approx. 90-120 minutes by car to People's Park, depending on traffic.

The staff was polite, helpful and determined to make your stay a pleasant one. The hotel appears to attract predominantly Chinese customers, so be patient when encountering language issues. Otherwise I could not have been happier with the hotel employees I interacted with.

The rooms were larger than usual in size and clean. There are no none-smoking rooms available (at least all four rooms I saw were smoking rooms) and due to the high percentage of smokers in the population, the lingering smell of cold cigarette smoke greets you the moment you leave the elevator. I had to wash or dry-clean everything I brought to get the smell out.
Having said that, the interior and installation in the rooms appears to be in dire need for a renovation - the furniture and carpets are beyond the state of "well worn" and I had to change my room twice one check-in day due to issues with the sanitary installation.

What else to report? The breakfast was good and plenty of choices were available. The foodwas good. The hotel restaurants were not open during our stay. We dined at several restaurants in the Jinshan area and found the food to be delicious and process to be reasonable.

All in all, the hotel is OK to stay at if you have business to attend to in the Jinshan area and dread the long commute from hotels located closer to the Shanghai city center to work.

Upon arrival it had all the qualities of being a 5-star resort, location on the beach and boardwalk. Lobby was spectacular and the reception was excellent. I was assigned to a high level room overlooking the water (beautiful). The room however was dated and lacked the 5-star décor such as the carpet peeling up on the corners (also well worn) and wallpaper doing the same. If you can get past those 5-star busters the hotel was a good place to stay in the area. Great breakfast buffet in the mornings serving both North American and Chinese. The management was very helpful.

From all appearances, this looks like a five star hotel. It has well-appointed, spotless, air-conditioned rooms with fast wi-fi, separate bath and shower and large comfortable beds. Our room also had a lovely view of a pretty park. Unfortunately, as with many upmarket hotels in China, service barely reaches one star.

We visited in winter which means they are probably running a skeleton staff. Was that any reason for the porter to take our bag up in an elevator while he directed us to climb a huge flight of stairs to the lobby? Not the best greeting. The two sullen girls at reception had to ring for someone who knew how to do a passport check-in. They then squinted and frowned and acted like it was a major drama because we wanted a queen bed (as per our elong booking) and they had booked us into a twin room. There are a hundred rooms and twenty guests at most. Really, the change shouldn't need THAT much huffing and puffing. The lacklustre service remained throughout our stay. No-one brought us a menu in the lobby lounge (the apathetic waitress just stood around looking...well....apathetic whilst the waiter chatted on his phone.

Most of the food outlets were closed so we went to the French-Vietnamese restaurant near the "Bailian" Shopping Center. What a contrast! Friendly, warm greetings, courteous staff and pleasant atmosphere. This only highlighted the empty, austere milieu back at the Golden Tulip.

Obviously, this hotel depends on sporting events during the summer when it probably runs at near or full capacity. Clearly, they don't care too much for the poor, brave souls who venture to stay near the murky, artificial beach in winter.

Other factors that might prove annoying are the lack of English throughout the hotel and only one English TV channel. In fact, the only English used during our stay was upon check-in when one of the receptionists asked, "Pay renminbi or American dollar?" If she had looked at our passport she would have seen that we are Australian.and have lived in China for eight years. The rain shower also lacks pressure which basically reduces it to being a drizzle shower.

The breakfast is standard Chinese fare. It is adequate but uninspiring. As I left the hotel at eight o'clock in the morning, I could barely see my way from the lift to the lobby. The lights had been turned off, which would be fine on a sunny summer's day but on a cold, wet, winter's morning the lobby looked like a struggling hostel trying to save power, not part of an international, five star chain as it purports to be.

Golden Tulip is a European chain. The hotel has many of the attractive features you would expect from a continental hotel. It's a pity they haven't managed to export some European savoir-faire to their staff.

This hotel had large, modern, stylish rooms (I could could lift the blinds from my bathroom if I wanted to look out to the ocean while I bathed), and an excellent breakfast buffet. I had no trouble communicating with the staff in English.
I would have given this hotel a "5" if they had only ben willing to turn the AC on. It wasn't hot outside (a nice upper 70's F) but this isolated high-rise really bakes in the sun, and the rooms were in the upper 80's during the day, lower 80's at night. There's a tiny (1 ft2) window you can open, but that's it. All the guests had their doors into the hall open during the day, because the rooms were sweltering. But at night, you have to close the door, and it's hard to sleep. The management repeatedly assured us that the AC had been fixed/turned on/would be fixed soon, but no luck in three days. I think the AC is simply turned off come October, and the guests can like it or lump it.

I set my expectation very low with this hotel. No English review so far here in tripadvisor and none is much written about the hotel aside from its official website. I honestly dont know what to expect from this hotel far far from downtown Shanghai.

The hotel is massive. It will give you the space you need and much much more. Our room was upgraded from a deluxe seaview room to a deluxe seaview suite due to high occupancy. The suite is much bigger than the whole 2nd floor of our apartment with floor to ceiling glass window. It has a walk thru closet, bath tub, separate toilet and bath, living room, working desk and the bedroom with a bonus day bed.

You will wake up to the unobstructed view of the Hangzhou Bay. If you love just lying in bed and enjoying the view, this is it for you.

There is free broadband internet in the room which is a big plus.

The breakfast can be better but good enough even for vegetarians. There are just so many guests at the time we were there.

A leisurely walk from the hotel is the City Beach and maple tree lined streets to the busy part of Xincheng Road.

The staff can all speak in English enough for you to understand and converse. They are all very helpful in all questions and request. We went to Jinshan via public transportation, it was far but not difficult to locate as it is widely known in the area. Hotel staff will call taxi for you and it will be metered with receipt once you alight.

I really fell inlove with Jinshan because of Royal Tulip on the Beach.

Room Tip: Get the seaview room, it is definitely worth it.
