“Good location but shoddy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2010

Stayed at the Courtyard Mariott (tripadvisor please take note of name) for 5 nights last month. Firstly, the hotel is conviniently located in the business district of Xujiahui but may not be most convinient to tourist as most attractions are a cab / train ride away. The Grand Gateway mall is 5 minutes away but unless you want to buy Armani at 5th avenue prices you may want to skip this mall. The main tourist shopping and sightseeeing are atleast 20-30 mins by cab.

The rooms are well appointed and very modern. A very functional study desk, clean beds and high speed broadband (RMB 60/ 1 hr, RMB 120 / 24 hrs). However, the rooms are not sound proof and traffic noise and the constant car horns are a nuisance despite me being on a high floor. My room had the same view as the coffee shop - boring neighbouring buildings.

Breakfast was unimaginative, almost the same dumplings and western fare during my entire stay. I had the lunch buffet once and it had the same boring appearance as the breakfast. I would highly recommend to venture outside (which I thankfully did) as Shanghai as some fantastic culinary offerings.

Overall a very dull hotel.

Great hotel in a nice location. Rooms are very well furnished. Gym is excellent. Staff is very attentive and breakfast was delicious. Highly recommend it. About 20 minutes from Nanjin Rd. 35RMBs. There are about 3 malls right next to the hotel for any shopping needs including a very nice market in the Grand Gateway.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel during the World Expo 2010. The location was great and just a walk away from good restaurants and shopping. However, it was far from the Expo and other tourist attractions of Shanghai. The service at the front desk was friendly, but when we ate at the buffet, it was about a 3/5. The food was okay, pricey, and the price for drinks was insane for a Courtyard! We loved our room, the bed was very clean and comfortable, and the decor was modern.

The only reason, I gave it a 4/5 is because of the buffet pricing, service, and the distance of the hotel from tourist sights. I would probably stay in a different district next time, so I can be closer to the sights.

My wife and I spent four nights at the Courtyard Marriott in the Xujiahui District of Shanghai in September. We would probably not return in the future. Though the hotel itself is a very attractive building with comfortable rooms and lovely furnishings, the staff seems poorly trained and unable to help with standard guest requests. My Gold Marriott Rewards card stating that it is effective through Feb 2012 was rejected by the hotel staff and I was told my status was "Silver" and that I was ineligible for an upgrade to the lounge floor or that I could even use the Lounge. Though the staff promised to "investigate" this discrepancy, it was not resolved during our four night stay. The hotel had limited information regarding the sights to see in Shanghai and the concierge and front desk staff offered no assistance in resolving this lack of information. There were numerous staff in the lobby but English was limited. We were not offered daily newspaper delivery when we checked in but found out later that this was available "by request." We dined at the restaurant once and found the food to be ordinary and the service lacking. When we requested "normal" water to drink, the maitre d'hotel went so far as to tell us that he could only serve us bottled water as the tap water in the hotel was "not safe and had -you know- bacteria". When we refuted this statement, saying the Shanghai tap water was perfectly safe and that we always drank it on our visits to Shanghai, he recanted and managed to serve us the water, but then ignored us for the rest of the evening. Ordering ice from room service became an interesting ordeal on each of the 4 nights. Because of the limited English spoken by the hotel staff, it often took 2-3 phone calls to various departments-- room service, housekeeping, front desk--to procure ice for our hotel room. One night after a series of requests, 2 ice buckets were delivered, followed by a phone call from a staff member chastising us for having both ice buckets in our room and demanding that we surrender one of them since another guest at the hotel had need for some ice. The coffee machine in the room was never cleaned. This is not the standard of service that we have come to expect in a Marriott facility. We hope relating our disappinting experience will result in some corrections to the mangement of this hotel.

This is actually at Courtyard by Marriott hotel and the title in Tripadvisor needs an edit to reflect the name in its entirety. We were on a tour of China during Christmas and stayed here for New Year's Eve. There was an outdoor concert a couple blocks away with many Asian celebrities so it was a noisy stay hearing music and fireworks late into the night. But given it was New Year's Eve, I am forgiving. In fact, if nothing was happening in Shanghai during New Year's Eve, it would be disappointing. The dining room for breakfast was really nicely decorated and our tour included a wonderful breakfast. However, I am sure that close by there are restaurants that can provide a better deal than what the hotel gives if your breakfast is not complimentary. Rooms were very decent and the bathroom spectacular if you don't mind the clear glass shower and open concept bathroom (yes there are sliding doors to close it off). Hotel staff are well versed in English facilitating great communication.

I am staying at the hotel for an extended stay. The hotel is not your typical Courtyard. Very modern with many conveniences. I was only booked for one week but found it necessary to extend for 2 more weeks. They did not give me a better rate. My biggest compliant is with the wireless internet. We moved rooms because, after paying for the internet (60RMB for 24 hours), our wireless still didn't work. It has not worked in either room! There are two of us in the room and only one ethernet cord. We needed wireless for both of us to work. Very inconvenient to go to public areas to receive wireless. We have access to executive lounge so that makes in nice. But would love to have the capability to access it in room after paying, as it is advertised!
