“Great Boutique hotel with full services in Shanghai”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2012

I wanted to check out a different hotel last time in Shanghai. I usually stay in the Shangri La which is fantastic but wanted a change. The Puli is top shelf. Check in was fast & efficient. The rooms are upscale and the service was what you would expect from a high end hotel.

You cannot go wrong with this hotel. A great experience from start to finish.

An amazing retreat of a city hotel. This hotel is probably one of the best city hotels that I have ever stayed. The design is super-sophisticated, romantic, and seductive at the same time. The Sunday brunch is phenomenal from both selections and quality. It's a perfect hotel for those who seek a little escape right in the center of hectic city that Shanghai is. I can't recommend it more highly.

Everything was perfect and excellent value for money. The design is ageing well and is still sleek and elegant. the pool/gym/spa are very pleasant and quiet. The staff is very proactive and smiling. breakfast/brunch are fine... I have stayed in this hotel several times and tried different room types but my latest stay was the best. Beds are good, room amenities fine, not a sound during the night.
They really go the extra mile and although i am rather picky, i give the whole team 2 thumbs up.

Weary eyed do you arrive and are greeted by a smiling key equipped receptionist who whisks you through the amazingly well appointed and indirectly lighted lobby and corridors directly to your room.

The door opens and you slide your key into the slot and you instantly feel like you are staying in a set of the Blade Runner, once the key goes in the blackout blinds automatically open revealing Shanghai's colorful skyline.

And when they call it "and SPA" they are not joking, you wont find a postage stamp sized pool or a gym on paper here, it is a fully kitted out SPA with lap pool jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and exercise room complete with serious free-weights / machines.

Each step of your day in the Puli feels special and you feel like but a handful of people being looked after at any given time.

Yes it is expensive but the value of the hotel shines through, that said breakfast is expensive (but they have a very good continental for free in the lobby) and yes not everybody speaks perfect English but hey this is China, not London!

I also briefly met Martijn the GM and he was really nice and genuinely interested in my feedback.

It is so amazing that after our week long Asia cruise we checked back in for about 6 hours happy to pay full price just to have the Puli experience one last time.

I cannot say enough about the Puli and we rate it one of our top hotel experiences ever in any country, it's the kind of hotel you don't want to leave.

The Puli is the perfect escape from the frantic pace of Shanghai but is still right in the centre of the city. The hotel is close to a subway stop that services all the main Shanghai destinations without having to change lines. The lobby, bar and outdoor area are perfectly designed for relaxing, staff are extremely friendly and helpful and rooms beautifully appointed. Our view over Jing-an park and temple were lovely. Overall a fantastic stay and highly recommended hotel.

The aesthetics of this hotel are truly 5 star and the rooms are spacious and well appointed - especially for China.

However the service and attitude of staff did put a dampener on our stay. If you're paying USD$700 a night you don't expect that you'll have to chase staff numerous times to follow-up on requests - the coffee machine in our room was broken and the humidifier never arrived. The concierge seemed annoyed when we asked for nearby restaurant recommendations. After 3 phone calls to reception to follow-up on these, we simply gave up.

However having a bath looking out over the skyline was amazing as was the food in the downstairs restaurant. The bedding is unrivalled and the design of the rooms very impressive. Internet wasn't that great, but we only stayed 3 nights so it wasn't a huge issue.

I would return and give the Puli another chance, but I would hope that next time all the staff were trained to a true 5 star standard,.

Dear Miffy72,
Thank you for posting your comments on TA. We have come a long way since August 2011 with regards to fine-tuning our services and service responsiveness at the front of house. We have progressively installed signal boosters throughout the hotel to balance the notoriously slow internet signal we receive ourselves. The city of Shanghai is progressively rolling out the installation of a glass fibre cable network. We expect to greatly benefit from this in the foreseeable future at the hotel as well.
On from that, please note that we keep special promotional arrangements and packages on our website at all times to suit all guests.
Thank you for coming to see us all the way from Sydney: we look forward to your next visit!
Many thanks and best regards,
Martijn van der Valk

A beautifully designed hotel complimented by superb service.

The hotel lobby is impressive enough but the rooms match - which is often not the case. The rooms are spacious and beautiful laid out with the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in.

The service is superb with very well trained staff who all make the effort to say "good morning or afternoon" every time they see you.

Highly recommended.

Dear adrianf64,
Thank you for your outstanding entry…
Team Puli is very happy to read your kind comments. Much appreciated.
What makes the beds so comfortable besides the King Koil mattresses is our mattress toppers, which is like a mini duvet you sleep on.
I am not a professional housekeeper, but I have the same bed at home; this is how I know. Now you are let in on one of our trade secrets!
Many thanks and best regards,
