“Come for the location; stay for the breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

The lobby is impressive to say the least; the rooms are very well appointed; the bed is excellent; the spa is good but nothing to rave about; the service is attentive but lacks style, the wireless network is stable, and the views are of Shanghai. HOWEVER, the breakfast - OMG!! Possibly the best breakfast in the world. In fact, it is a little overwhelming but delightful.

I stayed at the newly changed name of Grand Kempinski in Shanghai. Travelled here on business and although a bit more expensive than some of the other hotels was centrall located.

Checking in was fast although somewhat surprised that bell boys/concierge did not offer to take my luggage to the room. I did not ask so probably my fault but the normality would be to have the luggage taken to the room; an initial disappointment.

The room is spacious and the beds confortable but would not expect otherwise. Wifi is not free but is capped at 120RMB for 24hrs access, would have thought being a business hotel would have been free. Eating in the hotel is expensive, only tried the Chinese Rest the first evening but ate out thereafter as there is a Mall about 10mins walk from the hotel where there is plenty of choices to eat and also shop. A wonderful walk to the Mall in the evening to see the lights of Shanghai. To eat in the hotel is expensive.

In general the hotel is of a good standard especially if you are a business traveller. There are plenty of spaces to hold small meetings in the hotel lobby lounge. There is a large variety of choice for breakfast as you would expect for this standard of hotel.

Yes, I would stay here again. Then you pay for what you get..... Staff are fairly helpful and mostly at hand to help out but it is a good location.

Room Tip: The higher the room the better and also if you want a quiet room it will be located at the back of t...

The hotel is exceptional. We stayed there last week and have only good things to say. The location is good the hotel is spotlessly clean and the buffet breakfast is second to none. The lobby bar is a nice relaxing place to sit. The pool area is nice and the view from 30th floor is amazing. We have stayed at this hotel in the past and we will be back

Room Tip: Our room over looked the river which was lovely

We chose the Gran Melia for a nice Spanish dinner having read the reviews on their tapas etc. Well, I'm sure there's not a Spanish chef in the whole building. The Spanish restaurant has (as has the whole hotel) the most wonderful decor - it is stunning. That's the hardware, the software is appalling. Our meal was very average, the service pleasant but totally incompetent (for the price) and the whole experience was very disappointing - very expensive and totally underwhelming. I understand that Sol Melia will be replaced by another operating company - can't say that's a bad thing! Although, the new operating company needs to be REALLY good in order to generate interest in this hotel - such a shame, great location and superb product - very badly run!

After paying more than $300 a night I find extrange to pay extra 50% for early check in, $ 15 for internet in your room ( in most 3stars hotels that I´ve been lately is free) or $ 20 to use a PC for 1,5 hour.
Also it´s hard to find something open around the hotel in the night. Lacation is not the best unless you are in the financial bussines. I´m not camming back.

Staying on the red level business floors, we looked forward to our express check-in and welcome drink. We got neither. One room wasn't ready and it took an age to hand over two room keys in plain white envelopes.
It improved from there, though - comfy rooms, excellent service, great red lounge and a cracking breakfast. Oh, and a pretty stunning view, too.
It was very quiet when we were there, but we were told changes were being ads as the hotel is now owned by Kempinski. That should make a good hotel really great.

My girlfriend and I stayed nearly a week in the fairly new hotel.
Excellent quality furnishings in the spacious rooms make for restful stay.

Enjoyable too the wonderful views from modern, luxurious, very clean rooftop pool and spa.
Only fly in the ointment was the high cost of restaurants, for those on restricted
expense accounts, so alternative was to head for the shopping centres a good 10 mins.
away on foot.

Room Tip: Insist on more affordable restaurants - with enough support, this is a very comfortable hotel indeed...
